First and foremost, this is not a "Does god exists?" Thread. For purpose of discussion anyone who participates is assuming the Devil exists (and God too, I suppose).

I'm a romantic.  I love the idea of the Devil in a fiddle contest.  The question is, would he honour the terms of the contract or just "lawl you're going to hell anyhow!" even if you won.

Any thoughts?  Is he the grandfather of trickery, or a noble fallen angel?

(Any lore may be cited as fact)

He's the scapegoat needed to explain how a perfect, transcendent, and immanent deity could create such a thoroughly flawed universe.

For christians there really is only one source for info on the supposed devil. That would be the book of Job and the being who JHWH wagered with. That entity is portrayed as keeping his agreements.

I'm a polytheist.  I like to think of my gods as something like a Seinfeild episode.  Just because they are infinitely powerful does not mean they aren't sniveling spoiled entities (in fact, all that power makes be believe that is the case).

If the Devil cheated anyone, humans included, he would not have the respect of the other gods.  He would be lowered to the level of trust of "What can can physically do and what he cannot."  (Like Jack Sparrow!)

He's a broker, in my eyes... A lawyer. And a damned fine one at that.  He's a tricky little bugger, but bound to the laws.  What good is a lawyer who will rip up contracts?

He's like a dijinn, in that sense.

Edit to add:

Loki, in Norse mythology, is a tricky little theif.  He's entertaining to the more powerful gods, but many (including myself*) see him as a nuisance, never to be trusted.

*I like how my poor syntax implies I'm a norse god.

Ask Charlie Daniels.  I believe he won such a contest in Georgia.

Yep!  Which answers the question of whether the devil will keep his word.

The grandfather has to keep his word, or else noone would ever bargain
in such a bargain he relies enough on his own powers to not feel the need to lie, and when he is defeated sees it as a failing in the world, not his decision, for evil is vain

i'm sure i read somewhere that the Roman Catholic Church announced a few years ago that Hell, isn't a place ... what is it? sorry ... write a letter to the Vatican

this may explain why the Devil is wondering around in my head more than usual, and yes i didn't take my medication today!

Jesus said He is a liar, the father of lies and a murderer.  So i don't think the Devil keeps his promises to mortal beings.  The way i read the book of Job is that regardless of the Devil's power and deceitful nature, his authority was given to him by God and even the Devil is under the control of God.  In other words, Light trumps Darkness every time.  Could get into a very sticky theological debate here and i think the thread is more lighthearted.  my personal opinion is rather Zen-like.  We could not know or understand light, if there wasn't darkness.  We could not appreciate pleasure if there were no pain.  And it's interesting to know that one struck match can disperse darkness but there can never be enough darkness to extinguish light.  (unless we are thinking about black holes in space and then we get into a whole 'nother discussion but seriously, what is at the other side of the black hole and now i've probably gone too far...)

Dude... God would totaly win that fight!

And I still say that the Enterprise would win over a star destroyer!

And Greedo shot first!

And the number of angels that can dance on the head of a pin: 3!

If God even chose to fight at all. seems he's content on sitting back and letting the devil exhaust himself and taking the credit for defeat once he gives up.

totally an atheist here though so I'm just being cynical.

From what I've ingested about this lore, none of which I believe, but can be a cool subject, yes.

However in dealing with the devil one needs to read the fine print. It's kind of like dealing with the government, or the cable company, or renting from DA.

But lore can be based on lore I guess, and there have been many stories written and played out about this. A few episodes of Twilight Zone come to mind. In each case the deal looked good, but in the end you get screwed.

Actually, Isaiah 14:12 has a good discription of the Devil, aka Lucifer.

Lucifer led 1/3 of the host of heaven in a rebelion and was cast out of heaven.

As for him keeping his word, the 'contracts' come from other myths dealing with Satan, but even there he keeps his word.  I would suggest reading the story bearskin, among others on this point.

Even if you retain your soul, you should realize that entering into a pact with the devil is still a sin.
