Ok, the Obama campaign is not amused by the cover of The New Yorker. They'll get over it. Personally, I think pulling all the elements of the rumor mill together like this is pretty funny. What??? You got a problem with a free press?

I think its hilarious and destined to be a collector item. While I dont ordinarily read The New Yorker I intend to obtain several copies, at least one of which I shall have framed... This is going to be an image right up there with the Life photo of the napalmed girl running in Vietnam... I bet a lot of people wish they had an original copy of that cover on their wall - or listed on their eBay account. It was a BRILLIANT editorial move, and its sure to make a sell out issue.

Honestly, when I saw it this morning I was flabbergasted. I think it's brilliant satire.

I can hardly wait for the next issue, where they will (in the interests of "equal time") portray John McCain as a wheelchair bound 300 year old, beating a captive strapped to a waterboard to death with his cane, while his hottie wife stands behind him, running affairs of state, and Cheany and Bush are seen in the flys above, pulling strings like a mad marionette masters.... Yeah, that should even things out.

Bipo, free speech, and a free press work that way. Besides, if they are selling an article as interesting as the one I just finished reading (it's long, and I had to go watch Jeopardy, halfway through), I just might subscribe to the mag.

Or, at it`s worst... Interesting that some are laughing at the satire, while others (the victims of the satire) are laughing for the opposite reasons. This is the New Yorker`s "Imus/Bill Orielly/Jimmy the Greek" moment. Kinda like a lame assed white guy trying to do Chris Rock`s racial humor,and bombing on stage.

I'm sure it'll sell a few thousands more copies of 'The New Yorker', and help mainstreamize a famously 'elitist' publication... but I don't get why. Some post-modern obviousness, maybe? If so, this confirms we're moving away from the age of second and third degree understanding back to first degree literalism. It's fantastic it brings so much joy and happiness to people. Long live the New Yorker.

Hey, I'm all for Satire. I was one of the few kids in my class at school that had subscriptions to both National Lampoon and Mad magazine (back when they were both good) But you have to wonder... if the satire ultimately just cements the image in the mind of the undereducated public... who is the joke really on? Honestly... take one of those covers, and just walk it around where you work and live... ask people... does it say something positive, or negative about Obama? I'm willing to bet the opinions will be overwhelmingly "negative."
