as one who enjoys the mess out of pain, marks are pretty much gonna happen. blood flowing and i am totally thrilled. (although that rarely happens) i think my biggest turn on about the marks, is one the mark itself. i adore the 'symbol' of the time, effort, care, and energy that was shared and given to me for that moment. the other factor is the 'ohh' and the 'ahh'. it is normally garunteed, at least for a few days, that those marks are going to be sweet reminder of the pain too. that always causes vast amounts of amusement.

FR - I almost always leave some marks, but prefer a middle-of-the-road approach.  The idea of drawing blood does nothing for me.  But I have left some amazing welts with my whips, which have lasted a couple of weeks, all the way down to lovely semi-circular patterns with my carpet beater, which lasted a few days.  If someone wants a severe beating, I can make the effort and give it, but I typically prefer to play without being worn out myself at the end of it.  I've also played with someone who had health problems and couldn't take being hit at all.  Thankfully, there are loads of ways for you both to have a fantastic experience, regardless of limits.

TwoDommeDivas -> RE: Marking during play (7/15/2008 11:19:31 AM)

I'm not much into drawing blood.  It happens, especially with a singletail, but unless I am fluid bonded with that person I will try actively to avoid blood.  Have you ever seen the incredibly fine mist of blood that can be created by a bullwhip, which quickly dissolves into the air for everyone in the room to inhale?

Besides, there is no way to sterililze floggers and whips, so once they are bloodied they are no good for anyone but the person whose blood was drawn.  And if you are a dom/domme who plays with multiple subs and is unconcerned with that, I suggest that you are unsafe.

I agree.  Even using my whips without drawing blood, I spray the ends of them with Cavicide, wash that off after the recommended "soaking" period, then condition with leather conditioner (on my signal whip, anyway).  Yanno, being a top is hard work [:(]

I love being marked......they offer a visual reminder of the places i went with my partner......
Gotta love the bruises and welts from a good caning....or maybe the marks from an evil stick.....oh my!

WalterRego -> RE: Marking during play (7/15/2008 1:03:31 PM)

Marks keep on giving. The make the time and experience last and continue. They remind you  of the event suddenly when you look in a mirror, or are dressing. Best is when you inadvertently touch them or bump into something and suddenly it comes back to you. Like She's touched you there again to remind you. The other nice thing about marks is how they change colors and shapes as the time passes, marking distance from the last time and readiness for the next time with new patterns and shapes.

kiwisub12 -> RE: Marking during play (7/15/2008 2:07:44 PM)

I have to say that i hate the fact that i no longer bruise easily. The days of a blue butt from a spanking are gone - and i mourn them. I loved bumping into doors or tables at work and feeling that little twinge of pain. Now my butt just goes red and gets hard. Not nearly as much fun to my way of thinking.

My partner, Theresa, and I were talking about marks left in the wake of play.  While we are primarily dominant, we both switch.  And last Saturday at a play party, we both left with bruises and welts on our asses that remain today.  When we play with a new sub, we are careful not to mark him/her, but later on we feel more free to leave reminders of our handiwork.

A question came up today about philosophy.  Some have said that marking a sub is low class; that the real skill is in leaving only psychological evidence of your work.  We, OTOH, enjoy leaving physical evidence.  And, frankly, when I use a singletail, the sub will be marked no matter what, and always understands that he/she stands a chance of having the skin broken.  We LIKE marking subs.

So, how do you feel about marks?  What's your philosophy?  As a sub, how do marks that last days or a week make you feel?  As a top, do you enjoy marking, or do you try to avoid it?  And why?

I greatly enjoy leaving a number of parallel cane marks on a sub's ass.  It is my art, temporary though it is.

M. Dana

Some submissives dont want marks left due to work or family,
its very difficult to not leave some red marks that fade quickly.
I like to mark them up with a round black and blue spot on each ass cheek.
I love that they can relive the moment when seeing a mark on themselves.

Branding is My favorite way to mark a totally devoted submissive.

If only the cracker touches the sub, can you not just change it?

As for marks, some are good, some are bad, depends on how I went about getting them.  I have no preference on leaving marks, I've played with people who *could not* leave marked due to other halves not knowing their kink, and I've played with people who couldn't care about marking at all.  Both types of session are perfectly enjoyable.

whiteslavebitch -> RE: Marking during play (7/15/2008 2:36:41 PM)

I really love having evidence of play in the marks that get left behind. I love rubbing them, pushing on them for days afterward to remind me of our time playing.

Unfortunately, I rarely bruise from impact play lately. I have bruised recently from bites, and when I was punished very hard with a flogger that I hate (something I  never wish to go through again[:(]). I really do miss the bruising I used to get so easily.

edited for typos and clarity

This is probably because when you were first starting you used to tense up and/or even flinch when you where hit, but now when the pain comes you relax into it. I know that after I began to train Mine to relax and breathe properly through her pain it became much more difficult to leave a bruise. If you really want to be black and blue again, then tense up.  If there is less give in your muscle tissue you are far more likely to bruise.

I love having marks and leaving marks. It's definitely important to have the skill to not leave marks when necessary, but they're just so totally wonderful that I hate it when I can't leave them! D is living with his family(we're college students) so I can't do anything that might be visible for now. It's tough! I can't wait until I can freely cover him with the evidence of our more vigorous play!

afterforever -> RE: Marking during play (7/15/2008 3:01:58 PM)

I love being marked, although I hardly ever bruise my skin welts and scars very evenly, and it's a nice little reminder of fun times. I think it looks pretty too.

Sandyshores29718 -> RE: Marking during play (7/15/2008 3:09:57 PM)

*quick reply*
I LOVE marks! I once had a hand print from a spanking left on my ass for a couple days..mmmmmmmm  Then had some really really dark bruising on my breast that lasted almost 3 weeks...now that was quite fun!  I see them as little reminders of the person that left them. Whenever I see marks left by my partners it makes me smile and remember the scene where I got them from.  If I'm going to see a doctor then I wouldnt want the heavier brusing left, but small ones are ok in places a doctor would be use to it. I just really dont feel like explaining it when I go see my OBGYN.

Absolutely.  But if you play with someone different every week, then it would get to be a bit of a pain in the bum (sorry about the pun) to keep changing the cracker, so it's easier just to wash it, though I can't do that with my other whip, as it's all leather.  I'm not saying I do play with someone different every week, just a hypothetical.  Once I find that special boy, then it won't be an issue, as I'll only be using my toys on just him.

DesFIP -> RE: Marking during play (7/15/2008 3:19:56 PM)

Bruises I could do without. But a reddened ass? Fine. Nothing visible. I do not want my ums asking questions or worse, thinking he's abusive.

Yes, on many whips, but not on some.  And it's a talented person who can guarantee that only the cracker ever touches the sub.  I am not that good.

ThundersCry -> RE: Marking during play (7/15/2008 3:29:55 PM)

Its not about if I am going to leave any....marks. That never enters my mind...I know I am going to...

Now, on the other hand...

Some marks are just...badges of....courage...I wear `em graciously...
