Same here, you want to drive a moped or scooter you need a valid drivers license with a motorcycle endorsement. People who ride them are really taking their lives in their hands. I wouldnt reccommend riding anything smaller than an 883 around here LOL

That wouldnt apply in Manhattan obviously but Houston, Dallas, LA, etc are "must drive" citites. OK we get it. You hate your ex wife. And thats also why I don't live in Houston, Dallas or LA. I ride my bike in the bike lane. I use common sense. I don't speak for everyone out there who rides a bike but then again, if I drove a car I couldn't speak for everyone out there who drives a car. Just as many morons behind the wheel.

I actually LIKE the fact that I live in an area where we have very FEW assholes who think that having a monument on wheels gives them an inalienable right to crush anything that gets in the way of thier desire to be an idiot. It's very civilized. [:D]

The largest vehicle in my household is an Eddie Bauer Explorer - downgraded post divorce from an E. B. Expedition as I no longer need the extra room. I have never crushed anyone with it... However, common sense dictates that fast moving vehicular traffic and bicycles / pedestrians is not a good combo. I dont want them on NASA 1 or Bay Area Blvd or any of the other roads I mentioned for the same reason that I dont drive my cars down the sidewalks. There is no bicycle lane, and on many parts of those roads there is no sidewalk either. It is simply not safe to play in fast moving traffic, that doesnt make those who run pedestrians and bicylists down homicidal assholes bent on carnage and destruction... Rather, they are victims who have to live with the knowledge that they injured or killed someone, not to mention the damage to their vehicles... People need to take responsibility for their own safety, and the "Dont Play In Traffic" lesson is taught in kindergarten.

Two wheeled transport such as a bicycle, scooter or moped can be good in the right circumstances and environment. But if you need to navigate through major freeways, rain, snow, etc. they are a disadvantage. One major consideration is that car and truck drivers frequently do not notice two wheeled vehicles and will pull out in front of riders, cut them off, push them out of a lane, etc.

Very true, Leatherist. The city here has quite a few bike lanes and many biking enthusiasts. As a driver I do my best to be aware of two wheel travelers and people on foot. The worst though are small humans in a parking lot! They dash away from their parents and are not visible in certain spots.

- fr - i don't drive. i run almost all of my own errands, unless i'm out with master and it's on the way. i depend on public transportation or my feet to get me to the doctor or on errands. it works for me. :) i'll have to learn eventually because public transportation here isn't exactly the best in the world, and where i'm planning to go to graduate school it'll be worse, but i'd like to put it off as long as possible. i prefer the freedom i feel walking or bussing wherever i want and having the time to relax. it was a bit annoying because of having to arrange my work hours around the bus schedule before but now i work at home. :) master's selling His motorcycle in part because of getting tired of nearly getting murdered on it. He has a massive pickup truck with which to torture other motorists, though. a'ishah.

Well, I can't imagine NOT knowing HOW to drive....it's what every 16 year old I knew ever lived for. As far as I'm concerned, I drive a small scooter, 150 cc's, gets me around town just fine, and I also use the bike/bus option...it's a great way to get exercise, the bus schedules in the city are pretty regular, and at the cost of gas, it's now standing room only on the buses, pretty much all day. If I need to go get soemthing I can't transport on my scooter, I'll borrow a friend's car, (paying for the gas I used, of course!), or call a cab. I've moved closer to work, everything I need is within a 10 mile radius of home, so it's working out fine. Will I get a car? Not the way things are going.....I own my scooter outright, insurance for a year is half of what I used to pay a month, even with a spotless driving record, and I put anywhere between 6-8 bucks a week in the tank. It actually costs me more to use the bus on the 4 days I work than it does if I use my scooter, but I'm ok with that...again, the exercise angle is the draw there. And I will also walk if the destination is close enough. Too bad our public transporation in the US wasn't like Canada's or Europe's.....I'd never need a car.....I lived in Germany for 2 years, and never used one until after I got married and we moved off base. Walk down to the front gate of the base, pick up a bus, go to the Flughafen, take a train to the Hoptbanhauf (SP?), and go anywhere your little heart desired.....now THAT'S a transportation system! I also had people in my unit in Basic training who had never driven a vehicle until they got behind the wheel of their first jeep.....they just never needed to drive because of where they lived. Do I think any less of a person because they don't drive? No......frankly, that seems a little superficial to me. Would I want them to learn to drive, sure..why not? It's always good to know how.....I'm with the "I'm NOT your taxi driver" crowd on that one. Someone needs a pack of smokes at 3 am...oh well, dude...see you when you get back....heck, I had cravings for tuna fish and potato chip sandwiches at 3 am when I was pregnant....half the time, I had to go to the store and get the stuff myself...hubby couldn't be bothered to get up and get dressed! Trust me, if I hadn't known how to drive before, I would have learned then...a pregnant woman and her cravings are NOT to be taken lightly! edited once again, cuz I can't spell any better at 0330 than i could at 0200!

Driving or not, as long as you are self sufficient speaks more of lifestyle then anything else. A non driver reguardless of gender could not fit in my world.

Although I do have my license I do not drive about 6 years ago Christmas day I was hit by a drunk driver and in rush hour traffic and I rolled 6xs. My exhusband was able to pick up my insurance money and I simply have not had the opportunity or need to go out and buy another one at this point. In all honestly I am not sure if I could drive in heavy traffic again withouth feeling afraid, last time I tried I had to pull over so for me it's not just about economics but my own mental well being as well. I can get around with public transportation, bike, and my feet most places.
