Not including pills or booze... I know, I know. Or warm milk.

I'm sure I'm a super rare case, but every night I have trouble sleeping. Mainly due to stress, and I can't seem to turn my brain "off" long enough to slip into the land of the unconscious (where I'm a viking!) At the moment my best bet seems to be reading- its combination of focusing my thoughts and tiring out my eyeballs usually does the trick- but not always. Then sometimes I'm too exhausted to read but I still can't fall asleep, which is its own fresh hell. Also, exercising is great for wearing my body out beforehand but the brain still won't shut the hell up. So I would LOVE to hear any personal recommendations, even if they're usually hit and miss. Thanks in advance!

I put in the most dull, boring movie I can find... "Nosferatu" with Klaus Kinski usually does the trick... or any Kubrick film. (although skip 2001 and Eyes Wide Shut... they occasionally look incredible)

Or boring repedative music. Ray Lynch has one called "Magnificent Void" that can cure ADD.

Or listen to a McCain speech... but caution should be used: you only want to sleep, not slip into a coma.

I'm a long time insomniac.  I never just go to sleep....I pass out.  I tried everything from warm milk to those herbal teas.  I completely gave up caffeine for awhile, but that only made me crabby.  I switched from coffee to tea, but I couldn't do that for very long (I like both.)  I cut back on my cigarettes, but that didn't work.  I gave up drinking alcohol for a couple of months, but that made me even more hyper.  I changed my diet around, but I got bored with that.  I just can't do routines.  I live day to day, and worrying about it makes it worse.

I finally stopped worrying about it.  I go to sleep when I am tired, and I wake up when I need to.  I have found that I don't even need an alarm clock when I am on a schedule.  I sleep about 6 hours, and that is all I need.

Indeed, not worrying about any longer was helpful to me as well, and the essential first step in my case.  Listening to the Lord of the Rings symphony and a few other pieces of music also proved helpful.

My greatset success has come from utilizing self hypnosis to do a bit of work on my own motherboard, along with programming in some stuff that allows me to relax and go to sleep in response to protocols I established for myself.  In time, I got where I didn't need those nearly so often...having finally learned how to go to sleep.  When I'm under an unusual amout of stress I return to those, however.

Additionally, I quit fretting over getting X hours of sleep every night.  My body is happiest with two four hour rest periods per every 24.  Life rarely allows that.  If I'm getting six hours on average, so be it.  If I have to take a day to "recharge' and sleep for 14, OK by me.  Learning to stay asleep for 5-6 hrs at a time, when my body needed it, was accomplishment enough for me.  The rest is just gravy.

No caffeine after four o'clock.

No strenuous exercise excluding sex within 3 hours of bedtime.

Keep a consistent sleep schedule, meaning if you get up at 6:30 on weekdays, get up at the same hour on weekends. Go to bed at the same time every night. Just one night staying up late will reset your internal clock.

Personal insomnia cures - masterbation - and if that doesn't work, I get back up, turn on the computer, pull up the forums, and browse a few posts somewhere other than off topic (usually things in the various 'lifestyle' boards) and that Always does it.

Google 'sleep hygiene' and you will come up with loads of information.
A dark room, clean sheets. Use the bedroom only for sleeping. Turn off the tv unless it puts you to sleep (law & order does it to me every time). Drop alcohol and caffeine, eliminate the night time snack if it is sugary.
Sometimes it helps if I just get out of bed and do something, then try again later.

Is there a pattern to your insomnia? Something that the nights all have in common?

OTC stuff like Tylenol PM helps or just plain old benedryl.

valarian tea works wonders, so does melatonin.  magnesium supplements relax me but haven't put me to sleep yet.  i have stress related insomnia as well.  the other night i woke up at 2 am and bam, my biggest stress was in my head...i never did get back to sleep.  if someone could find a way to help turn off the thinking at night, they'd help a lot of people.

I  began running ~ 4 miles 3-4 mornings a week. When I added 3 x weekly yoga, zap. I'm sleepin fine. Yoga is like NiQuil but without the yucky taste and with more hot babes. .

I had been on large amounts of sleep pills....  the psychiatrist put me on this, which doesnt seem to build a tolerance.  I did not think it was possible.  Many night I would simply stay up and then crash when I crashed.   This med is taken 1 hour before bed. It is not the type of pill that if 1 is good 2 are better....  extra doesnt -isnt -hasnt happened in my case.   Prior to this- the ambien and valium could choke a horse.   .....

Maybe try chamomile tea, or a hot bath with lavender oil in it. Someone else mentioned exercise, which was a good one too.

I live with insomnia.  The only thing that lets me sleep a solid 6 hrs straight is hard play, intense orgasms and a bruised sore body.  I havent slept in years.

Oh and my oldest who suffers from severe anxiety disorder has found that going to sleep with her iPod on, and setting up a folder of soothing songs, helps to prevent worries from flooding her mind. Prior to this, I would have to read to her for an hour.
