God is like a big elephant.  One religion is so close to God all it can see is its floppy ear, another religion sees the trunk, and yet another its massive leg, etc.... each one will describe God either like an elephant's ear, trunk, leg, etc.  Step back and simply experience God and you will see the whole elephant.

OnlyHisLovebug -> RE: Religious beliefs of Collarme members? (7/22/2008 9:42:16 AM)

I believe that what I believe really does not matter much in the grand scheme of things.  That said...

I believe there is some intelligent entity (or entities) that created the world; that there is no way it was a random and chance happening.  Beyond that?  I believe that I don't really have a clue.

Recently, the Flying Spaghetti Monster has garnered some of my attention.  It's as plausible as anything else.

There are no gods.
We're it, people.

Imagine if aliens came to Earth and we had to explain our behaviour.
"OK, Earthlings, let me get this straight:  'Some German gay guy in a Roman palace said priests can rape kids and women are inferior,  but they all worship a zombie and a book that says we should stone people who wear wool and cotton on the same day.  A doctor should have her hand cut off because she saves men from prostate cancer.  A three-year old Nepalese mountain kid is the reincarnation of a fat guy who thinks real suffering is imaginary.  Ancestor-worshippers think anyone who doesn't have the same beliefs lacks honour and a human soul, and deserves to be tortured and to die.'
"You guys are freakin' NUTS!!!
We're outta here!  Shape up or blow yourselves up!"

Religion is the opiate of the masses; what conflicts would be raging in the world if we eliminated religion as an excuse?   Regular churchgoers and religious leaders are more likely to be criminals, especially to sexually interfere with children and to embezzle; entitlement ++

Think of all the destruction wreaked on others because of racism veiled as belief in tooth fairies, and remember:
'The Great God Ra, whose temples covered acres/
Is filler now for crossword puzzle makers.'

So be nicer to everyone now, 'cuz this is all there is, babies!

The higher the IQ, the less likely a person is to be religious, but a couple of my best pups have been religious, perhaps in keeping with serving a higher power ;-)
So are BDSM types smarter than the average bear?
Innnnteresting . . .

what might be a load of crap for one is anothers belief.  i am christian and i prescribe to no "one" religion.  i try to live and love the best i can.  i've never understood the criticism of different religions and beliefs.  if something doesnt' work for you but does for someone else then live and let live...why does hatred and criticism have to even play a part in it?

it's a little like your kink might not be mine but it's okay.  why can't people be more accepting of what others might believe in as far as religion or the lack there of is concerned?

I have never felt that two people need to share the same religious opinions. People need their own opinions to find true happiness in this world. It's easier to read some archaic book, follow all kinds of silly, meaningless rituals, and stop thinking, than it is to actually live your life and come to conclusions on your own.

I believe that some people need their own opinions to be happy - and that some cannot function or find their ideal happiness without basing upon others opinions.  If that was not true, then Ds and Ms would have no place in the world.  If it makes them happy - then is all good.  Rituals can be affirming - I would not discount any depending on the reasoning behind it.  And books can be harder to consider than first thought to be.

MizSexyVixen -> RE: Religious beliefs of Collarme members? (7/22/2008 9:56:46 AM)

I am not in the least religious. I am, however, highly spiritual. I believe higher spritual power(s) than myself exists. I believe everything in the universe is evolving, and that as humans, where we are now is where we are -supposed- to be.

It's the journey itself that counts, not where you get to.

faerytattoodgirl -> RE: Religious beliefs of Collarme members? (7/22/2008 10:03:28 AM)

so anyway...my parents tried to get me to be catholic...i was baptized (dont remember exact age)...and then sent to catholic schools.  st joseph's and loyola.

loyola expelled me twice.  for my gender expression (wearing the female uniform instead of the male).  keep in mind we're talking the 80's where many of us were sent ..um..away.

so i gave up on it...religion that is.  if you cant be yourself it isnt for me.  those 2 years were one of the reasons why i never graduated and have like a grade 10 education.

but coincidently.  i have 2 scars on my chest from several heart surgeries that form a cross...so im still blessed.  this does not mean i believe in a god.  but perhaps someone is watching over me??? naw...its just coincidence.

Hmmm...I believe there is one God, and that He loves all of which He has created. I believe that we are here to teach and to learn, and that sometimes we learn our lessons from most unexpected sources.

I've long since given up on what I think the purpose to existence is, but if we are here to learn, what's the point? What could we learn ourselves we couldn't learn from God?

How to grow, evolve from and even love that which is infallible.

People who are so arrogant as to think they know everything and they know what God thinks (should he exist) tell me one thing: they're terribly, at least on a subconscious level, insecure about themselves. They need to hate other people (I daresay finding joy in the eternal damnation of others, by throwing it in their faces constantly, is hate) to avoid hating themselves. They probably have poor self-esteem but they learn to adopt an arrogant, self-absorbed attitude from their pastor or priest.

quote:

ORIGINAL: HarryVanWinkle

And how do they know this?  Because it's what Mommy and Daddy told them when they were children.  Many of them have grown up enough to realize that Mommy and Daddy were absolutely full of shit about everything else, but they jus KNOW they were dead on right on this subject.

I have serious problems with showing people respect when they are incapable of self-analysis, self-criticism, and at least considering inimical schools of thought, be it economics, politics, history, culture, religion, etc.

It's really sad sometimes.

Uh oh.

My brother is a born-again Christian. I can promise you he has thoroughly, and for the last 17 years engaged in self-analysis, self-criticism and has certainly considered any number of schools of thought--probably more than most of us on this particular subject.

Before he became "born again," he was a hippie. He smoked pot daily, drank tall gins, dropped acid, followed the Grateful Dead, etc, etc, etc. He was kicked out of confirmation class as a 13-year-old and didn't step back into a church until he was 30. Today he goes to church at least twice a week and attends bible studies. He also lives his life in a thoughtful way: for his (meager) paycheck, he works at a homeless shelter. On Thursdays he volunteers at the jail, ministering to prisoners. On Mondays and Wednesdays (and quite a bit more lately, due to the floods), he volunteers at the Mission giving out food. He's kind and loving to everyone. He does not hate and I doubt he thinks of himself often enough to even consider his own self-esteem. To me he said he has to live this way because all of the blessings he's been given in his life.

How would you define your religious beliefs, either by theology, dogma, religion, or spirituality?
(snip)
So, feel free to share your own.

I'm an open Wiccan - a practicing Solitary.  (Despite living in the buckle of the bible belt, in an area that would no doubt still be burning "witches" at the stake in the name of their "God" if given half a chance to do so!  And despite being raised in a Baptist family.  Can we say "blacksheep" where spirituality comes into play?) My personal beliefs are of a more spiritual than dogmatic nature, and I have little use for organized "religion" or religious institutions.

I hold a belief in the duality of nature at every level, in Goddess and God as a combined pair.  I abhor prozlatizing from any reglion, including my own - frankly, looking for converts should be outlawed.

I do not believe that the practices I follow are by any means the only "right" ones.  They are simply the right ones for me - they "fit" where others don't, much like clothing.  I do, however, acknowledge that a LOT of harm has been done in the name of various Religions - mass murder, starvation, causing criminality, sowing dissention and outright hatred - you name it, it's been done in the name of one religion or another.
