OK, so is it safe, or isn't it?

"The head of a prominent cancer research institute issued an unprecedented warning to his faculty and staff Wednesday: Limit cell phone use because of the possible risk of cancer.
The warning from Dr. Ronald B. Herberman, director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, is contrary to numerous studies that don't find a link between cancer and cell phone use, and a public lack of worry by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.  "

I don't have a landline, so my sole phone is my cell phone.  I just don't see the point of paying for both.  So if it does cause cancer, I guess I'm fucked.  I am not that worried about it.

Can't tell until the "unpublished data" can be examined.

You'd think that if phones are that dangerous, you'd see increased rates among cell techs and engineers who spend a fair bit of time around this stuff.

And what about cordless phones?  Several types are near cell phone bands, and they put out similar power levels.

We live on top of a hill and have some acreage, so we have been approached by several cell phone companies who want to put a tower on our property, and pay us a very nice lease.  However after researching it we decided it just wasn't worth the risk and we also worry about new findings of health risks in the future which would make it hard to sell property with a tower on it.

From everything i read i do worry about the long term effects of cell phone use and increased risk of brain tumors.  We may not know the real effects for 20yrs or longer.

I once took a risk assessment seminar.  Included in it was a wonderful simulation, in which a chemical, dimethylchickenwire (hilarious if you've seen a benzene ring) has been discovered in a lake.  The source of it is a factory which is the major local employer.  There is concerted opposition to the chemical, and the factory will shut down if they have to implement controls.  The toxicity data is based on rat tests and is so inapplicable that you essentially are flying blind.  The worst outcomes are shutting down the plant with insufficient evidence, and allowing the population to be poisoned with insufficient evidence.

The proper way to find the hazard of cell phones is to track the population over forty years, both people who use cell phones constantly and those who never use them.  See if there is a statistical difference in cancer levels.

There is no way that anyone will wait forty years. So... accelerate the tests.  Use a higher level of radiation for a shorter amount of time.  Assume that the higher level and the shorter time cancel each other out.

You can't test them on humans.  So test them on rats.  Assume that the results are applicable.

Develop a use profile for how cell phones are used.  Use the median usage, 5% and 95% percentiles.

The above is a simplification of how a test could be set up.  Obviously, if I wanted to manipulate the conditions to arrive at a predetermined result, I could do it easily.  When I released the results to the press, the journalists would have no clue about the test conditions and probably wouldn't care.

Which, in the case of conflicting research, leaves us in the dark as to the actual effects, until they turn up in sufficient numbers as to overwhelm objections.

I think most Americans will die from super-sized-meals sugar, salt and fat overloads first.

I've been told (although I can't remember where or by whom so it's probably pointless to even post this but what the hell) that using an earpiece - bluetooth or otherwise - greatly reduces the risks.  I use my cell phone for everything, and always with the bluetooth. So hopefully that assessment was true.  :)

Years ago I worked for a company that did EMS dispatch.  A very sweet woman there worked with the first headsets that were around, and for years she always had an earpiece in her ear.  She died of cancer, which began in her ear.  It was pretty horrible; they had to cut out her ear and part of her face as part of the treatment.  Whether the cancer was related to excessive use of her radio earpiece was speculative, but everyone at the office thought it was linked.

I am afraid I have some bad news.

One day, you her, he, them, us, they, we, me I us ...well we will meet an untimely fate.

In the last 3 yeas people I know dont gab on the phone for hours.  Maybe it is the crowd I run with?

They did a study where a man slept in a shielded bed- no electric noise, smog, none.  It might have been lead.  Anyhow his immune system got better and he was healthier.

What you CAN do?   Limit wires and items that use electricity in your house. Especially in the bedroom!!   All that penetrates you.  In my bedroom is no tv, radio, phone.  It is to sleep. Not to entertain. I never get wakened by a phone, never have a tense phone talk in there. I also dont bring in the cell. No computer in bedroom.

My advice to the poster who was approached by cell tower.  I do think they are a fad.  [the tower itself] Is to insist such tower would carry signals from ALL carriers.  The harm is when 7 companies all set up separate towers.

I would have allowed the tower. The 30 year lease money is nice.

I once saw a billboard ad for a cellphone plan, it was called the teen plan I think and was 43,000 minutes per month. There are only about 43,200 minutes in a month so I imagine the phone had a fast charger.

They made up their mind about olestra, found that it is harmful, and decided to sell it anyway.

What's my point ? I have no idea, maybe someone can decipher it.

Have you ever wondered if labratory rats are just pre-disposed to cancer?

While i was reading this, i was having the same thought about folks who tended to favor and flock towards things like cell phones, cigarettes, cyclamates, Olestra and such.  Despite the cause and effect concerns, i have come to the conclusion that i am very unlikely to get out of this world alive so i might as well enjoy the stay.

i have heard that about 50% of all marriages end in divorce and the rest end in death.  That could bring one to the conclusion that marriage either irritates the crap out of you, or kills you.  Perhaps it is all a matter of perspective.

Nope, just read about the tests themselves.  I'm biased - once I read about manipulation/shortcuts, I instantly decide the opposite conclusion as the testers claim.

The key is to talk on a cell phone by not holding it to your ear using a speakerphone or other device (earpiece).

pahunkboy,

The problem is, you are still bathed in the beautiful EM spectrum no matter where you go... The sun puts out tons of electromagnetic radiation, and we're bombarded by cosmic radiation and X-rays continuously, day and night. You stand a much higher risk of cancer from frequent sunbathing, or tanning too much in a salon than you ever do using RF devices in your home...

Oh, and TV's? That USED to be true... but both today's tube type TVs, (which are quickly disappearing) and plasma and LCD screens put out only a tiny fraction of the radiation that TV's used to in the 1960's and 70's. At worst, you stand a good chance of developing nearsightedness, due to your constant focusing on a spot 18" away.... like you would if you also read a lot.

It's very tempting and our fear is that if we don't do it one of our neighbors  might, so we wouldn't get the income but would still have a tower close to us. We have an undeveloped county park on one side of us and my guess is a tower may go there.

We will probably be moving in 5-10 yrs, so here's the question--would you purchase a house and property that you really liked that had a cell tower on it?  The income from it would pay a lot of the mortgage payment.

In a word Yes, if it would helppay the mortgage.  We  are all going to die of something. Of all the possibilities I think using a cell phone is at the bottom of the list. Just my opinion.
