Well, thanks all!

I thought that perhaps there was a known "code," similar to the hanky thing.  Ah well.

Either that or confused?

Nowadays, the meaning behind which ring in which ear doesn't means anything anymore. Think it's been delegated or demoted to a fashion statement  *yeck*

yea they should make it the nose instead...as its more noticeable because both men and women who have piercings tend to have long hair which covers the piercings...so if you use the nose instead or even the lip..but if you have hair like bear then you cant see the lip...

Thankfully my lip isn't pierced!
Though keeping a military haircut style so the earring in my right ear is visible for all to see!

In the 90's I had read that while in the 80's the choice of earlobe meant a difference that it no longer did.  Often which ear was pierced was either just an arbitrary decision at the time or done because no one knew what the former stereotype meant.

Personally I like the look of a single pierced ear.  My Master wears I diamond that I gave Him, and I got a second piercing in my left ear to wear the other one.  That way we always carry a piece of the other one with us.  That means much more to me than which ear He wears it in.

The ammount of earings also didn't mater as long as thier were more in the left ear then there were in the right.

HOWEVER!!!!!

All Pirates always wore thier earings in thier RIGHT ears. There was a reason for it however none of the historians can agree on what that reason was but all documantations of pirates whos ears were pirced it was always the right ear and it was usually a HEAVY gold ring that was on it.

Steel

that reason is simple, Allow me to enlighten you all...
It has to do with the scabbard, the last thing you want to do when you draw your sword is get one of the ornate quillions stuck on an earring... it hurts, similarly, when you fire a rifle you dont want the possible failures being complicated by a small piece of metal, which usually dangled down quite a bit
Also, it is a lot harder to rip out an earring in the right side during a battle, at least if you are right handed
HOWEVER!!!!! (See what I did Thar?)
Edward Teach and Charles Vane had both ears pierced, as well as a few others, Edward usually had a sword in each hand, so he didn't really worry, and Charles Vane was just as likely to enjoy a little ear-pulling right before a battle as not :)
