BTW-   look what he left out of the speach.

"come to America.  Shop. Shop for freedom. Together we can fight the evils of the meillania be participating in the market economy. It wont be easy. But I need your help to.  (enter your email adress as your baord the charter flight to New Yorks shopping district)"

6:33 p.m.: The tens of thousands of Obama fans are being entertained as they await the senator. The reggae musician Patrice kicked things off, followed by the rock band Reamonn.

These are not groups well known here but in Germany I understand they are quite popular bands.

Don't think the analogy fits Thadius...sittining at an anti-aircraft used to shoot down American fliers is just to extreme an example to compare with anything short of treason(which she probaby should have stood trial for)

Like I said I knew the example was on the extreme side, it was just the first one that came to mind.

Hanoi jane earned her place in infamy and should in most instances be allowed to occupy her position alone...she is unique

He is currently holding a live news conference with Sarkozy.

So far the big quote is from Sarkozy "The French love Americans"

This is just political talk. I doubt many French have anything personal against Americans, neither do most Europeans, it is American capitalism they don't like or the Anglo-Saxon system as they call it. As most liberal French have noted, when Britain liberalized along the American model, the rich got richer and the poor got poorer. They would do well to resist Sarkozy's overtures to corporate America of which Obama will soon be a part, he will find it impossible to resist if he is elected.

"playa-hate`n" = jealousy,envy.

I wasn`t calling you a hater or anything like that,Archer.

But I got the rock-star and you got Sen. McCheese.Ya pays ya money and ya takes ya choice.

No I got Bob Barr not much better.

But far better deal than the Greens got themselves. LOL

I forgot you were a Barr guy.

Good luck with that.

I heard he`s running a parallel convention during the GOP`s?

Or was that Ron Paul?

I heard something like that.

It this true?

Sarkozy loves Bush.In spite of the hype,Europe has plenty of conservatives.

Most French like/love America(and Americans) and certainly don`t hate us more than anyone else.

They don`t like our leadership, which is fair.

They also tried to give us a heads-up and warned us against getting involved w/ Iraq.

And for that, we pissed on their good will attempt. They are very gracious to still talk with us.Thank god the were/are at least some adults, in leadership positions.

Archer -> RE: Obama Electrifies Berlin (7/25/2008 10:24:44 AM)

Nope the Libertarian Convention is already past Was Memorial Day weekend.
That's when Barr got the official nomination for the party.

As for any idea that my guy will win anything, LOL I'm not that delussional.

My hope is that the message to the Republicans will be get the fundies out of the driver's seat.
My hope is that the message to the Democrats will be Moderate the fringe elements as well.

Unfortunately the likelyhood is they will both credit their wins or losses to not being fringe enough.

Yes, but we now hold the mantle of the new Russians. Our reckless foreign policy and lawlessness (rendition, unilateralism, failure to sign on with the world court, and self serving rhetoric) is why foreigners are upset about the USA. So, I must disagree with you you. Obama is just acknowledging what a lot of Europeans feel, see, and recognize instead of blowing them off. This is a smart move.

But of course, he likely has your vote too. One would expect you to agree with this.

We are talking moderates, people not yet decided. My contention is that he is taking a stand that is sure to appeal to voters he already has, and Europeans, who don't get a vote ... and has the possibility to push away some moderate voters. He is also possibly writing a check he can't cash. It will be very difficult to get us out of Iraq, and even harder to get the point across that military might isn't the way to conduct foreign policy.

Quick point ...

If you asked 1000 Americans how they feel about the United Nations and working with the world, what percentage would you imagine would have a positive view? What percentage of those would you imagine are already supporters of Senator Obama. My guess is that it's pretty low in the first instance, and pretty high in the second. So, we are talking about appealing to those with a dim view of "working together with the world", in order to get in office. Bottom line, I don't like this either, but the golden rule of marketing is that you market to your actual target audience, not the audience you hope you will have.

In all honesty, I think these words mean nothing to Europeans, and they shouldn't. Europeans will be impressed, when we stop sending tanks to conduct policy, and stop being so aggreesive with those we don't agree with.

So ... in all truth, what did Senator Obama accomplish with this part of his speech? He spoke the truth, but risks votes. He said some nice things to Eurpoeans, but may not be able to come through when it counts ... which may end up looking worse than thant the evil we know, that at least (and very least at that) speak and shoots from the same hip.

Hippiekinkster -> RE: Obama Electrifies Berlin (7/25/2008 12:05:55 PM)

The Siegesaule was a good place for Obama to speak from. I'd call his speech good, but not great. I would like to have seen him say "we are ALL Berliners" or words to that effect.

......you're probably correct........but what a sad thing.

Years and years ago when i was a teenager my A level (the exams you can take when you are 18) history course had a large section on US isolationism. Even then, i didn't understand how intelligent people could hold such a view. At the same time in A level English we were studying John Donne, "No man is an island, entire unto himself".
Since then things have become even more interdependent......commerce, technology, culture.......all these things transcend national borders. Without foreign markets things could become even worse for US manufacturing for instance.
Obama may be out of step with what the average US citizen feels in this regard........but, it seems to me, he actually has their best interests at heart.
i was struck by McCain's visiting of a US German restaraunt on the same day, no doubt appealing to those who don't see any necessity for the US to look outside its borders. It may be popular, but only in the same way that a crack dealer is popular with crack addicts.
Is it possible to wean the average US citizen off their dependence on the illusion of cultural/economic independence?

As director of the Developing Communities Project got proper asbestos abatement done in the homes and apartmenst of low income people in some of the poorest neighborhoods of Chicago.

As director of Project Vote he registered 150,000 unregistered citizens in Illinois prior to the 1992 general election.

So those must not be good acts or are you spewing untruths again?
