It amazes me how people can't see the difference between outrage over something, and the possibility that something said won't win a single fucking vote he isn't already getting and has the chance to sway some against him.

His words were well spoken, and I agree with them all. That said, saying them isn't a hill worth dying on.
Caitlyn I can see the difference's you are referring too, just don't think i agree with you...those that will get up in arms over his "airing dirty laundry"...were never going to vote for him anyway. The small minded and ignorant voter, the jingoistic chest beater was not casting a vote for Obama in a month of sunday's...

caitlyn -> RE: Obama Electrifies Berlin (7/25/2008 10:04:04 PM)

We can respectfully disagree then.

I think there are a lot of blue collar workers in the industrial Northwest ... moderates, normal folks ... that far prefer the Democratic party ... they were Hillary supports after all, but have a very high degree of nationalism and stong feeling about our military.

There are a lot of people in the South ... moderate voters, normal folks ... that tend to prefer the Democratic party, as long as the Democrats don't put up an elitist hyper-liberal ... you know, the ones that former President Clinton got to vote for him, specifically by staying off highly charged issues like immigration. These folks are very nationalistic too, and most have yellow ribbons on their cars.

Now, the first group was probably in Senator Obama's corner, and may still be ... but all this talk about torture and immigration ... and not visiting our troops. Tell me, what state is so important to win in the next election ... Ohio, right?

The second group ... well ask any myriad of Northern elitist liberal, how they did in the South. So ... go to Europe and act like a Northern elitist liberal ... smart?

Here's an idea ... how about a two part plan ... go after Senator McCain on the economy, and put forward a plan of his own. Now THAT will get him some votes.

My question to you would be this where does a disaffected Democratic voter go,when the choice is Obama and McCain I don't see the necessity to pander. Now I am not saying Obama does not need to appeal to the blue collar,he most certainly does, nor should he grow too comfortable in the elitist liberal role, but the choice this year is stark and does not leave the voter too much wiggle room between choices.
The example I would cite to you would be the disaffected Hillary backers that proclaimed they would vote for McCain,in a moment of high umbrage they might proclaim this ...but where do they go..do they cut their noses to spite their faces by voting for McCain who's weakness on issues affecting woman are well known...I don't believe they will do this

Well, they are moderates because they will vote outside of party lines, depending on the choice. Senator McCain is strong in places like Ohio and in the South. I see Senator Obama's support as fairly soft in these areas of the country ... all the more reason his speech and absence of a visit to the troops troubles me ... they only seem to have down side and no up side.

I will be honest in this exchange ... my first choice was Senator Clinton. I think Senator Obama was the party's choice, because her unfavorables were just too high. I must know three hundred people that detest the ground she walks on, but can't tell you a single reason why ... but that just is, what it is. My main opposition to Senator Obama, was that I thought he would struggle against the Republican spin machine in a national election. After he got the nomination, my mind changed a bit ... I mean he did beat the Clintons, and sure knows how to raise money. For a while, it all looked so good.

Lately though, he scares me, from the point of view of a candidate that I will likely vote for. I see him do things like this, and just say, why? What are you gaining, and what might you lose? I see some odd choices of flip-flops ... now they all flip-flop, but the randomness is a little disconcerting. Most of all, the lack of a clear message on the economy. The message he has, he delivers in an amazing way. No doubt about it, the man can give a speech. Problem is, even my favorite song gets played out after a while.

I guess my bottom line is one of risk/reward for much of what he says lately ... and how ready I am to have some meat put on the bones of his campaign, to quote NorthernGent. I'm starting to get used to the pretty oratory, and starting to hear notes out of key and lyrics that don't rhyme.

I actually believe some will vote McCain, with the thinking that if he beats Obama, that opens up the Dem nomination for Hillary in 2012.  Some may even look past the smoke and mirrors and vote for him because he has gone against his own party to reach compromises, and to legislate, even at the risk of losing his base. McCain-Feingold, McCain-Kennedy, and the group of 14, just to name a few.  I also think Obama is going to be losing some of the more active anti-war vote that he has been getting, with his position of not bringing the troops home but expanding the front in Afghanistan.  Both of the major party candidates have alot to worry about from their bases.

I would just love to meet the person on Senator Obama's staff that weighed the pros and cons of not visiting American troops based abroad. I could then die knowing I met someone more stupid than me. [;)]

From what I can gather, the man is campaigning on "change". Perhaps he is intent on detaching himself from the usual protocol......misguided maybe, more faith in the US electorate than yourself perhaps, bouyed by his recent success possibly.

General point on the OP......haven't the Germans got something better to do than wank themselves into a coma over a talking head they've never met, nor know nothing of? If he comes 'round our way he'll get hoofed up the arse for helping the police disrupt pub opening and closing hours.
