Or...perhaps....the Obama hype is starting to fade and people everywhere are realizing this man has fancy words and a pleasing tone but absolutely nothing else to recommend him.

He is at least an entertaining jester.  I will give him that much.

So, Barack "only" being able to draw more people than McCain, or any other living politician ever could in a country he's not even running in  (Some number between 20,000 and 200,000, who cares.) is a sign of people giving up on him, huh?  And which overseas trip by a presidential candidate are we comparing this to?

Emphasis added in the above quote.

Ronald Reagan addressed well over 200,000 at the Brandenburg Gate in 1987, an untold number were on the other side of the wall listening.

Oh, and there wans't a rock concert prior to the speech.

slvemike4u -> RE: 200,000...or 20,000? Obama's Crowd in Berlin (7/26/2008 8:35:41 PM)

Ronald Reagan was a sitting President speaking in a divided Berlin...don't really think the comparison is fair

dcnovice -> RE: 200,000...or 20,000? Obama's Crowd in Berlin (7/26/2008 8:38:26 PM)

Also, if we don't trust a 200,000 figure from 2008, can we be confident about the one from 1987?

Reagan was already president and was discussing these people's livelihood. You can't seriously think that Reagan was the cause of those people showing up. These German's showed up to see Obama out of interest and curiosity. This is not even close to the same thing.

slvemike4u -> RE: 200,000...or 20,000? Obama's Crowd in Berlin (7/26/2008 8:41:21 PM)

Does the live audience even matter in the world we live in today...a more relevant number would be how many heard or saw the speech via the many mediums available today

I was responding to:

"So, Barack "only" being able to draw more people than McCain, or any other living politician ever could"

Not necessarily a comparison, but a response to the assertation that nobody could draw a comparable crowd.

You are the one who stated "any other politician".  If you don't want to be proven wrong, be careful about what you say.

The Germans showed up for cheap beer and a free concert, Obama just happened to be there.

Simpleslave101 -> RE: 200,000...or 20,000? Obama's Crowd in Berlin (7/26/2008 8:47:55 PM)

The election is probably already decided.

Sanity -> RE: 200,000...or 20,000? Obama's Crowd in Berlin (7/26/2008 8:48:49 PM)

Are you worried that Obama might not be able to withstand celticlord's scrutiny? Otherwise, if his posts bore you rather than make you nervous, you could just begin ignoring them. After all, how many anti-Bush threads have there been... and why would you feel that Obama is such a golden boy that he can't face that same level of criticism.

Aha! I was starting to think I was alone in noticing this. How many Obamania threads have you committed now, celticlord? Twenty? Thirty?

Oh, sorry. It's just that I assumed the people reading would be reading with a little common sense, and not playing gotcha games, looking for an example that doesn't even apply to to the subject at hand. My fault!

Oh, and not to act like a republican or anything, but since you want to argue the semantics, I did say any LIVING politician, and as far as I know, Reagan has wormfood for a few years now, so you're kind of losing here either way.

Again, my apologies, I realize now that I should have simply pointed out how dumb what you said was instead of responding intelligently.

I think the point was that CL referred to Obama as a "court jester"the implication being CL pay's a lot of attention to this "court jester",a fair point in my opinion

Sanity -> RE: 200,000...or 20,000? Obama's Crowd in Berlin (7/26/2008 9:18:50 PM)

And so?

People on the other side of the political spectrum have obsessed over president Bush for years and years now, and have called him anything derogatory they could possibly think of. So again, what makes you or anyone else think that Obama should have a pass when it comes to such withering criticism as Bush faced.

You might as well get used to it - because the kitchen is heating up, and this is just the beginning.

I'm not concerned whether it's 200,000 or 20,000 in Berlin.  I'm gonna be concerned whether it's 200,000 or 20,000 in some of those suspicious voting precincts in Ohio.

Hmmm.....maybe's he's not such a rock star after all.....(other than being fashionably late to his own concert, of course).

Uhm... just to be fair here... you said "any living politician ever could".  Reagan and JFK used to draw some serious crowds.  Oh and I won't get into some of the still living dictators that mandate attendance of the populace...

Why would the word living even be there if I were discussing all politicians, living or dead? I would have just left the word out if that were the case. How picky. The way you're reading it implies that I'm comparing Obama's draw to the draw of a politician while dead...why would I even do such a thing.

Dead politicians make speeches?

Interesting.
