<hangs head> I am embarrassed to admit that I not only can follow your posts, I could have written them. But I still write lazy prose, dropping punctuation at whim and stuffing words in a peculiar order.

Okay, I get riled up when "lie" and "lay" get misused. All the time, it seems.

Lie is intransitive. It is not a verb that acts on some object.
Lay is transitive. It does act on an object.

So you LIE down.
And you LAY somebody.

Isn't it obvious? Happy to help.

Oh my god!  I'm such a ditz... it's a joke and I just got it.  lol... I love it when humor sneaks up and bites me in the bum... Thank you for that.

peace and passion,
sunshine

In related news, it was also revealed that Daylight Saving Time actually creates no additional daylight.

and by the way... why are farmers always blamed for this one?  They get up to milk the cow when it's half past crazy no matter what the numbers on the clock say.... Says the granddaughter and sister of farmers.... clears throat

I usually have confidence in my spelling but where I have problems is that I went to school in Australia and lived in America. When I first got to Australia, the teachers used to mark me down for spelling (because I used American English) and then when I moved back to the States, I was marked down for spelling because I used Australian (or British) English. I couldn't win. Now, my spelling is a mish-mash.

Grammar? Ye gods, that's a whole other story... [X(]

Right there with ya Rain...theater, theatre, caliber, calibre, colour, color.....but then after while it was fun.....when the teachers marked me wrong, I just pulled out the dictionary and damn!  there it was!  I was a smartass when I was in school...thank goodness I outgrew it!!!!  [&:]

edited for a punctuation oops!

LadyRainfire -> RE: Grammatical annoyances (7/29/2008 8:31:07 AM)

[&o]  I tried that - and got told that it didn't matter, I was in such and such place and had to use proper spelling for 'there'. Now where I did get into serious trouble and almost got thrown out of school for was continuously correcting the history teacher in California. The asshole couldn't even teach what was in his own textbook correctly. And hated the fact that I was actually reading the damn thing. He ended up tossing me out of his class and refused to let me back in. When it came before the counselor and she heard what was going on, she gave me an "A" in the course and made me her aide. Which basically meant I either ran errands for her or read during that period. [:D]

You also used "there" incorrectly, in the context of your sentence to denote ownership, it is "their" [;)]

Thank god that was the only thing wrong with that sentence!

But honestly, am I the only one who gets snarky when someone refers to "a women"? I see this so often, I think it must get taught in school.

sunshinemiss -> RE: Grammatical annoyances (7/29/2008 3:53:49 PM)

You know Strong,
we should have a show of hands and see how many people DIDN'T get the joke in that post up there....  I myself see only 4 but then they glared at me.  *Loves a man who is witty, dry, and not obvious - makes me feel special to join the "I understand him" club.

There instead of their (or any combination of the misuse of there/their/they're).
Incorrect your/you're.
Non-text/typed: People that say highTH when pronouncing height.

ORIGINAL: sunshinemissbut back to the topic at hand... I will admit that in life in general I had a boss who said "it breaks up the monopoly of the day" and I just never respected him again... sigh

maybe he was a trustbuster?

I write short little sentences and don't want to explain them - like graffiti.  I can't spell, split infinitives (ow!), am bothered by ending sentences with a preposition but can't figure out how to avoid it without being silly.  (And that is something up with which I will not put.)

Roselaure -> RE: Grammatical annoyances (7/31/2008 7:27:26 PM)

"Proactive".  I hate this.  There is "active" and there is "reactive".  "Proactive" is redundant.

People using "less" when they mean "fewer" and vice versa

And of course, not knowing the difference between "prostate" and "prostrate"

Lordandmaster -> RE: Grammatical annoyances (7/31/2008 7:41:59 PM)

"Proactive" is a real word and it doesn't mean either "active" or "reactive."  It's not redundant.

("Figment of one's imagination"--now THAT'S redundant.  By definition, a figment resides in one's imagination.)

LeMis -> RE: Grammatical annoyances (7/31/2008 8:05:55 PM)

[&:]   I am guilty for using the phrase, "fixin' to".
As in going to do something.

I am "fixin' to" go to bed.
    LOL!   [:D]
