Domina, Domme.. Did I miss something?

Status: offline 		Okay, I know I've been away for a bit.. And haven't kept up with the internet lingo... I've never liked using the word Domme, I prefer using male dominant, and female dominant... Now there's a new word Domina? Is that just another internet word for female dominant? Can some one please explain.

Status: offline 		It's all the rage dotcha know?!?! All the hip cool "in" people are using it now.

Ya seeee, dom sounds too much like dumb, which of course the domme's didn't mind......BUT when they realized that domme sounded too much like dummy....WELL of course something had to be done!

So........there was a world wide conference, held in a neutral local (Nigeria of course) cuz well, you can only imagine what getting a huge conference of domme's (excuse me......Dominas...) together in one place could be like. All those egos and retinues and such...... ANYWAY, after much flouncing and posturing and beating of poor helpless slaves......they finally decided on Domina as a substitute.

Status: offline 		Hello Steelriven. Just wait for when some doms start calling themselves Dominus (or Magister). A lot of people were ''impressed'' by the Roma HBO series and picked up some of the latin lingo. Using a dead language does not make it ''classy'' for me.

Status: offline 		I will always think of female dominants as doms, or dominants.  Domme, domina, dom, what ever, I see no reason to put a sex on it.  And when people say it is to distinguish males from females I say why not just ask?

Status: offline 		Hello CruelDesires. I agree that it has been around for a while and was not used much except for some pros who used the term  for more ''distinction''. The fact that more and more ''non pros'' are picking it up is what motivated my attempt at subtle humor by blaming it on a recent popular TV series that had a lot of slaves and ''Dominas'' in it. I know that Domina is short for Dominatrix. No, I am not confused at all, just amused a little. RL.

Fuck. I didn't know this. Okay, some e-mail conversations are starting to make sense now. I thought it was just another word for a Female Dominant.

BTW, I am just a Dom. If I have a need to diferenciate I might refer to myself as a FemDom or a Domme, depending on what my fingers wish to type.

Status: offline 		The word isn't new.  It might seem new to you, but the reality is that it isn't new.  Its not that its sexist, it merely reiterates the differences between male and female.  Just like those two words-male, and female.  It doesn't mean one is less or more than the other, but that they are different.  If you use the word "dom" interchangebly, you'll confuse whoever you're communicating with.  The time spent arguing which is correct or acceptable in this instance, might be better spent splitting hairs over words like womyn, bois or daddies.

Status: offline 		'Domina', aside from the educational award, has been around a while as a title for minor nobility.

I seem to also recall it being used in the lifestyle long before Domme', but can't pin down when. Also can't find anything directly supporting it's being a contraction of Domina-nt/trix, as opposed to an adaptation of the titular version ( in the same manner as Princess, or Lady).

Status: offline 		Ok, here's the scoop for me. I use domina because folks insist on calling me a domme, which they pronounce "dom-ay" -- a phrase which I came to despise. I evaluated how I thought of my role in both our household and before our servants, and decided on a term that felt right for what I was and how I behaved in relation to our own household.

Because the word flows so naturally for me now, I tend to use it when referring to female dominants, though I tend to refer to dominants without gender unless I am being specific about one gender or another.

The definition that I used to determine which term I preferred to designate my role among those inside and out of our house was this one from Webster's Unabridged Dictionary:

Domina \Dom"i*na\, n. [L., lady. See Dame.] (O. Eng. Law)
Lady; a lady; -- a title formerly given to noble ladies who
held a barony in their own right. --Burrill.

It has nothing to do with being a professional dominatrix, though I am considering walking down that road. For me, it has to do with the way that I was taught to perceive myself when I was training in our household, and the dignity with which I try to comport myself at home, among our servants, and in the community.

I wouldn't say usually. A lot of non-pros use the word domina. They ought to be able to use the word dominatrix also, it's not supposed to be limited to pros.

The gender of a dominant makes a huge difference to me, so I'm all for using terms that distinguish between the two. Or three. Or four, come to think of it. It's just shorthand. I think people are getting their knickers in a twist for nothing. The most politically correct terms would probably be maledom and femdom, and I sometimes use them. But domina and dominatrix have a sexy look and sound to them.

So many threads here use the word domme that I find myself using it pretty often as well. I have to agree that this word should probably be put out of its misery. If it's not mispronounced as "dommay", which sounds ridiculous, then it's pronounced exactly the same as "dom", which defeats the purpose of having a gender specific term, at least in oral communication.

I hereby announce my intention to stop using "domme", and replace it with (in order of preference), "domina", "femdom", or "dominatrix". I don't agree with those who think that domina and/or dominatrix refer only to pros.

Status: offline 		As it's already been pointed out "domina" is not a new internet term or a shortening of dominant or dominatrix; it is another word from the same latin base and indicates a female/woman ruler, noble, head of household or other role of leadership, control or power that has been in use for centuries in various cultures.
