Oh, Kerry's are totally out of style.

All the hipsters today are wearing McCain Flip-Flops. They come in an amazing array of styles and sizes.

UNIVERSE TODAY [www.universetoday.com] reports:

Anybody want to speculate on what this is going to be?

K.

The rovers made a sharp right turn and have actually landed in the Arizona desert and had since been exploring what was believed to be "Mars".

wasn't that a twilight zone episode?

No, those are on Pluto--that's why it's no longer a planet.

Oh, I don't think anyone's trying to pooh-pooh the notion of extraterrestrial life here... I think it's more like; "we've been down this road so many times..."

The government's caution about the admission that there might be bacteria on Mars shouldn't be a huge shock to most people. We've been getting used to the idea of alien life since at least the mid-19th century.... (before that, if you want to include Kepler's "A Somniuem" to the list) But we have had a few flaps that might make people worry. There was the panic broadcast of 1938,  and several UFO flaps in the 50's and 70's that might make some people wonder if we're ready to meet the reality of not being alone.

However, IF there is microbeal life on the red planet, at least we can take solace in the fact that they probably don't have ray guns. ;)

And yet, the government is scared of stem cell research.

But I didn't think anyone has made those in over seventy years!

Au contraire. They've been manufacturing them busily in recent years.

Senator = the flip flop bullshit

Governing is making choices. ANY senator has an extensive record of "flip flops" -- or nothing would ever be passed until we become a one-party dictatorship.

Yes, I know the administration is working on that, but let's hope unsuccessfully.

Back to the OP and to those who have raised the question of its discussion---

What kind of news is "we think we know something but we're not sure so we can't say but we'll let you know?" That's speculation--not to mention the same kind of pathetic journalism that flashes across the screen at 5 to announce "breaking news at 11."

bipolarber -> RE: Something's coming... (8/3/2008 9:16:01 PM)

Well, this is a longstanding discussion on the SETI boards... IF we ever did find evidence of life elsewhere... how do we break it to people?

Naturally, the ideas are "stepped", depending on the nature of the discovery...

If we discover bacteria on another world, we leak it out, and discuss it theoretically over several weeks before confirmation to the media.

If we detect evidence of an intelligent species, we do some conditioning to the society, getting various world leaders to suggest the possibility to their population, and over a period of time, we release the news once the population is assured that there is no need to panic.

If they land, and walk out onto the white house lawn... all bets are off.

It IS funny, but not as funny as you think.

In my 20s, I carefully studied the business of music (as it was my sole livelihood at the time), and you would not believe the ridiculous standard recording contracts---which indeed included explicit language ensuring the company's rights to any recordings sold on Mars.

Nope. I'm not joking.

Live well,

Tim

How many of us on this site run SETI@home?

I do not. I already know that Earth has had about half a dozen extraterrestrial species, as well as two other intelligent Earth species (Big foot and orang pendek), living on it continuously in their multitudes for at least the past five thousand years, so what would be the added value?

bipolarber -> RE: Something's coming... (8/4/2008 4:45:44 PM)

Musicmystery,

It's not the entire government that's scared of stem cell research... just the part of it that is composed of luddites who want to suck up to religious nutcases. This too, will change.

Besides... my money is on them announcing that they've discovered where Elvis has been living all these years.  [;)]

[/quote]

Damn Treasure, you beat me to that one. I'm sure it is Elvis. He quit his job at the Minnesota supermarket and moved to Mars.

Uncle Nasty

PS Or, prehaps, they found the alien that backed Senator Dole in his last bid for President. Remember the photos of the Grey looking over his shoulder?

bipolarber -> RE: Something's coming... (8/5/2008 2:56:45 PM)

Well, it looks like the results are in... and... it's a big bunch of nothing.

Seems Pheonix's insturments detected a chemical in one soil sample that seemed to preclude the possability of life having ever been on Mars... but then a second insturment couldn't detect the chemical in question at all...

So, no big news.

You can read more about it at either the NASA sites, Space.com, or Phil Plait's "Bad Astronomy" Blog.

Like I said before, we've been down this road so many times.... (sigh) :(

Well, that sacks it, it was perchlorate....

So, there will be an oil war on mars, or the cows have farted.

This is one giant fart for man;
one giant fart....for mankind.

Looks like TopGun is gonna be flying planeloads of rubber dogshit outta Mars.
