Speaking out of total ignorance here but...

What exactly does one do to "earn" leather? 50 lashes for a vest? 100 for a cap? Is it tallied in hours of public play? Who decides who is deserving of leather? Is there a board of directors? Judges? An observation commitee? I am for some reason picturing a referee in assless chaps, tossing a penalty flag and blowing a whistle.

There is no universal system for earning leather only a tradition that leather is earned and given as a recognition of growth.
Historicly the few references available do talk about a series of progressively more intense scenes (Guy Baldwin Drummer magazine #151 from memory)
But there are other stories available as well where the real requirement wasn't the scene itself but rather the growth displayed by participating in the scene)
There are also stories about leathers and club patches being earned through service to the club. (see motocycle club pledge/ prosects)

Generally, but not universally, I have found a vest is earned through a consistant long term display of commitment to the local leather club/ community/ leather family. It is generally awarded by someone who's been around longer than the person getting the vest who has taken notice of how much work the person gives to seeing that the community thrives.

lol. well here in Michigan orange is "Anything Goes" or sometimes meaning "hearing impaired" As told by a gay Dom in a class last winter.

A leather forum on here or another site would be great.  I am not leather, but there are alot of leather aspects that I am interested in.

Yes, I'm aware of the long lists. The longer you make the list, the harder it is to memorize and the more often you get mixed colors. My point was to narrow it down to the "big kinks" and create a much shorter list. The Gay Leathermen had the original...but it doesn't encompass things that are big for LBTs and hets. Making a list of 10-12 items that we could make worldy universal was my point.

I like the idea of the short list to be distributed between the Intl Leather communities. I'll get in touch with Intl Leather Boy, and Intl Leather Sir, and see if We cant sit down and get a small working list going and they can take it to the other Title Holders and see if we cant get an agrement...or something. Sounds like this girls gonna go have a beer with the family [:D]

lmao I still get a giggle about the way the hot topic goth kids lace their boots! I just wanna walk up to them and tell them what it means in some circles. Or the gangbangers sporting hankeys........especially the more "evil" colores we have.

My heart is Leather , I am in the community  but wish i was able to do more , yet i do what i can when i can .
fey i so want that on tape  someone asking a gang banger is they want  pee play or blood play , latin kings sport yellow .
One quote among many in this thread  i dig is  you dont have to wear leathers to be leather , so great ! I would also like to add , i had not seen a  couple of people for a very VERY long time  10+ years as they are a distance away , yet i recently  spent some time with them and you really know what Leather is when you just pick right up .Archer and  Master Fire are much better at the explaining than i am , you too Fey , but humbly and proudly i try and be and  live the best leather i can .With honor and respect enjoy  the journey .

This is all really interesting to me- I mean all I know of 'leather' as a concept is the Leather Family who I've seen do demos and workshops around various events.

Definately something to get more interested in

I almost never wear leather.  (In Arizona in the summer?  Ugh.)  I'm definitely not Victorian.  I definitely DO however, consider myself to be "Leather" and am an active member of the local community.

I've never been entirely clear about this term; does 'Leather Community' refer to gay men into BDSM?  Or to sadists of all stripes?  Or what?
