Missokyst -> RE: Summer Olympics - what will you be watching? (8/5/2008 10:44:35 AM)

I won't be watching any.  I am somewhat thankful to the writers strike that lasted for months on end because it broke my interest in television.  I watch only a few shows now.  Boston Legal, CSI, Law and Order, the history channel and some home improvement shows.
I used to watch the gymnastics part of the olympics, but after the tanya harding episode I cut back.
I thought she was pretty good what a pity she didnt think that.

Wasn't she ice skating and not gymnastics?

I would be much easier to name the ones I have no interest in....Basketball, Boxing, Hockey, Weight Lifting and Wrestling. Handball, Table Tennis and Tennis are iffy.
As to the rest, as much as I possibly can, as often as I can. Definitely the opening and closing ceremonies.

Yea, I think your right. Can't see why that would stop some one  from watching though.

sambamanslilgirl -> RE: Summer Olympics - what will you be watching? (8/5/2008 11:50:55 AM)

none of the events

in recent years, the Olympics have been quite boring in my pov. i'm not even excited like most that Chicago's a 2016 candidate.

happypervert -> RE: Summer Olympics - what will you be watching? (8/5/2008 1:00:22 PM)

I look forward to watching gymnastics and combat sports like wrestling, judo, etc. Fencing too, though not so interested in boxing, Kayaking is neat too.

Other events I can take 'em or leave 'em.

I shall be watching the pony play ,the swimming , gymnastics ,the single tail  trials .and though the shibari is only an exhibition sport this year it still should be great .

I wont be watching any of the Olympics, due to myself being a supporter of a Free Tibet.

I am still confused by this position.  How is watching the games supporting China?  The only folks it is punishing are the athletes, and your local  media.

It is of course your choice to make,  I just don't see the logic in it.

Enjoy your protest,
Thadius

HalloweenWhite -> RE: Summer Olympics - what will you be watching? (8/6/2008 4:03:20 AM)

While I have a lot of issues with the Chinese Government-how they  treat people training to become athletes, some as young as 8, subjecting them to verbal humiliation as well as pushing them to the point of mental and physical exaustion, and their treatment of the tibet people, I'l be watching the swimmers-female that is-I have a thing about women who are powerfully built! lol.

The only way I think things'll change in China is if the Governments stop dealing with them but that won't happen because the various governments would lose out too and it's all about money in the end.

MissIsis -> RE: Summer Olympics - what will you be watching? (8/6/2008 4:49:58 AM)

From what I have been hearing, the Chinese people themselves want the Olympics.  I don't think they want us to be do-gooders on this particuliar matter.  They want the games, unless all the reports I am hearing are wrong.

I won't be watching them.  I have always thought the Olympics & sports in general are silly.  I am sure I will get flamed for this, but what does it really matter if someone is better in one sport than another person.  When it comes right down to it, they are just games, competitive games that serve to help people or countries think they are superior over another.  Will that really make a difference in helping us all see that we all matter & are important in one way or another?  I doubt it. We all have our strengths.  Each country has their own unique strengths & weaknesses.  All the Olympics do is test a very small aspect of superiority, while boosting egos, which we probably have plenty of going on without the games.

I like watching some baseball, but when it comes right down to it, it is just a game.  People try to make these things into much more than that.

When all is said & done, it is all about egos & the sales & margin dollars these games bring in.

I find it interesting that a location full of pollution was selected.  Who's in charge of making logical decisions regarding athletes and their health?  Some of the American cycling team arrived in China wearing respiratory masks.

Embarrasing your host

I agree, but here is another interesting article related to the smog/pollution.

In what scientists are calling the single largest attempt ever made to improve air quality, scores of heavily polluting factories were shut down and some two million vehicles were pulled off roads across Beijing and a huge swath of northern China - an area roughly the size of Alaska.
During the weekend, the hazy skies finally gave way to swirling blue.

I guess total government control can have some positive results... now the same could be said for putting all of their politicians on hiatus for, I don't know, forever.

First I would have to know if they wore the masks because the honestly thought there was a danger or they wore them to make a statement.

I would guess it was probably a combination of both.

They have apologized for their actions, saying that they were not making a political or environmental statement.

humble, unasked for retraction

Vendaval -> RE: Summer Olympics - what will you be watching? (8/6/2008 12:44:55 PM)

Only by extreme measures of shutting down businesses and limiting vehicles has the Chinese government been able to improve the air quality for the games.

Given my asthma and allergies, Beijing is not on my list of places to visit.  Maybe fly into there and then to a more rural area of China.

Thadius -> RE: Summer Olympics - what will you be watching? (8/7/2008 2:02:06 AM)

Just a heads up, MSNBC is currently broadcasting a mens soccer match US vs Japan.

I have a funny feeling I am not going to be gettng much sleep the next few weeks.

Edited, to fix my mistake, which I can only blame on being bald.  The US women played Norway yesterday and lost 2-0.
