Curling iron woes - 8/5/2008 10:38:43 AM

Status: offline 		I just burned my hand again on this stupid curling iron.  I am either going to cut my hair or stick it in a ponytail as soon as I wake up!  I have tried several brands (now I know why brands is an appropriate term).  I have tried different heat levels.  This one is set on 7, out of 25 different temps.
I need a solution!  My hair is currently at my shoulder blades and is heavy and thick.  It doesn't take much to curl it but... OWIE there has got to be a better way!!
Do any of you know of a good brand of curling iron which will make the chance of burning any less?

Status: offline 		Have you considered going, um, straight?  The Chi flat iron is one of the best purchases I made this year.  I use it every day and don't know how I ever lived without it.  My hair is naturally thick and the flat iron produces a straight, soft look.  The only product I use on my hair is the thermal spray.

Status: offline 		I am trying to figure out HOW you keep burning your hair.  Does your curling-iron not have a plastic tip at the end to hang onto?

Status: offline 		  Me... I'm another curling iron klutz. This despite my mother being a beautician for many years as I was growing up. I gave her so many fits of despair and anger over my inability to do my hair.

Status: offline 		i have no advice...on curling irons except...fuck no...never again in my hair.i got one so stuck in my hair once i had to cut it out! only two months ago i got a blood pressure cuff stuck in my hair at work by carrying it around my neck and the velcro stuck real good in my hair. i looked pretty silly bedside trying to pull that thing out. i had to leave the patients room and ask another nurse to help me.she got the scissors and cut it out.....good thing i have so much hair or else i would look like i went to worlds worse botch job of a hair stylist!
i bought a flat iron, but my arms are not long enough to pull my hair length through to straighten....i pay a stylist to straighten my hair with a flat iron on the occasions that i want it to hang straight to my waist. it takes 2 hours to straighten my hair with a flat iron.... like i have that amount of time every day!
 thank god for chopsticks for holding up my hair!

Status: offline 		My hair doesn't take a long time to flat iron, but it takes patience.  It's so thick I have to section it in thirds when I flat iron it.  It takes longer to dry my hair in the morning than it does to flat iron it!

Status: offline 		burning myself is one reasons i finally gave up and just started wearing my hair the way  it is.  now i just use a diffuser on my hairdryer and call it good.  it seems the older i get, the less patience i have for doing my hair.  i'll never own another curling again.

Status: offline 		What does a flat iron do?  Just make it not frizz?  I have indian hair.  It is thick, curls fast and can last for days if I don't wash it.  I considered just letting it hang there but it looks lifeless.  I think I might need to cut it again if it comes down to that.
And everhope... OMG I have had that happen. 
Never get those irons with spikes!
I do wish I could find one with the spiral plastic guard again.  I could grab that one without a burn.

Status: offline 		It calms the frizz, makes hair smooth, straight, and soft.  It also removes some of the volume, which is nice for me because I have thick, heavy hair. It straightens your hair in a sliding motion, from roots to tips, it doesn't tug or pull at it.

If you have a small comb, and place it close as possible to your scalp, it can keep ya from doin that...

I did this last week!  Well, just with a curling brush and a blow dryer.  I have no idea how I managed to get it so tangled, but I had to cut out a big chunk of hair.  Luckily, it was on the underside of my hair, and I have enough covering that area so it doesn't look too, too stupid.  I need to go back to having short hair.

Status: offline 		ok, when you're going to meet your partner, do you do anything to your hair to make it look pretty?  I'm sitting here with hot curlers in my hair now, because I've got plans with a certain domly like someone later.  speaking of which, i better get my arse in gear, get dressed and get on the road.

Status: offline 		I love my flatiron, I can finally get poker straight hair for the first time in my life.  I do keep burning the edge of my forehead by the hairline, though. 

An afterthought:  make sure you're wide-awake when using it.  I flatironed my finger the other morning, hurt like a bitch all day long.

Status: offline 		Heh I used to. Jeez I would do the whole panicky hair and make up routine until I realized that it wasn't worth the effort.
With make up I would worry about smudging or running, and my hair refuses to stayed curled for long so by the end of an evening I would end up looking like my normal self.

Thankfully he prefers my normal self over a made up self! I'm awful with the hair and make up thingie, I always feel like there is a girlie manual that I didn't get and I never ever feel comfortable or natural like that.

I've often wondered how a guy feels to wake up next to a woman who bears little to no resemblance to the one he went to bed with the night before!
Then there is that whole part to it, do you remove the make up before you go to sleep?
Do you worry that your hair is going to go all bed-heady?

I need some chocolate icecream, this has gotten me all stressed out just trying to think about it.

Oh and no, I don't have any good tips for not burning yourself with a curling iron sorry! Its all just tooooooo complicated for this simple mind.

Status: offline 		add another horror story but this time to hot curlers.  OMG, never again .... my hair ate them. 
(kind of like getting burr's out of a horses main) 
like Christine I tried going the curly route too, problem is humidity hair that grows larger then life with a little dampness in the air. 
so, I too have moved on to a flat iron and thermal oil.  it does take a bit of patience to work through it all in little sections,
(almost waist length)  but the results are worth it.  it's smooth, frizz free and lasts even here in the pacific northwest.
