Here was an experiment, note that the control also did not sprout, compliments of Debra Lynn Dadd. " We made six samples of water: unmodified Clearwater Florida tap water, which contains chloramines and fluoride Clearwater Florida tap water passed through our whole-house water filter which we purchased from Go Beyond Organic. This unit removes chloramines, fluoride, and other pollutants that may be present--leaving the healthful minerals--then passes the water through a water conditioner that returns tap water to it's natural structure. This was not heated. Clearwater Florida tap water heated just to boiling in a glass jar in a microwave oven. Clearwater Florida tap water heated just to boiling in a Corning Visions glass pot on an electric stove. Clearwater Florida tap water heated just to boiling in a Corning Visions glass pot on an gas stove. We allowed the heated waters to cool and placed all the water samples in glass jars with covered labels. Without knowing the contents, I labeled the jars A, B, C, D, and E. We set up five identical ceramic ramekins on a small cookie sheet and labeled them A, B, C, D, and E. We placed one piece of folded paper towel in each ramekin and added Chinese chive seeds. Every day we watered the seeds with one tablespoon of water. All the ramekins were sitting next to each other on one cookie sheet, under the exact same conditions. We had no knowledge of which water was going into which ramekin. After ten days, the seeds watered with water from our water filter began to sprout. The little sprouts grew quickly, strong, and straight. The next day, the seeds watered with the water heated over the gas flame and on the electric stove began to sprout, but these sprouts were short and crooked. The seeds watered with microwaved water never sprouted, though we continued to water them for another week. Also, the seeds watered with our Clearwater Florida municipal tap water never sprouted. The dramatic results of this experiment made us want to do it again, using these samples, plus additional water samples. We want to test the bottled spring water we had been drinking before purchasing this filter, and a sample of water exposed to sunlight. And we want to test alkaline water. So there's more to come on this topic. If you have any thoughts about this experiment, run across any other data on the effects of water on seed sprouting or do this experiment yourself, please send me an email. Given these results, I'm surprised that there is not more data about this for gardeners, raw food devotees, bird owners, and others who regularly sprout seeds. NOTE: My conclusion from this experiment was that "microwaved water did not sprout seeds." But I went into the experiment wanting to find out if it would or it wouldn't. What I hadn't anticipated was that the control tap water wouldn't sprout seeds, either. A reader pointed out that "The experiment indicates that water that will not support sprouting is not improved enough by microwaves to allow the seeds to sprout. The experiment in no way shows that microwaves made the water less able to sprout the seeds." So I can see now that to answer the question as to whether or not microwaved water will or will not sprout seeds must use as the control water that will actually sprout seeds and then test that water, microwaved, to see if it will sprout seeds."
