According to my housing association newsletter, crime is going up around here; mostly property crimes I guess.  Anyone have a security system?  Feel it's been a good investment?

Technology is great, but it is not the lone answer.  There are many things that can be done to lower the crime in a given community, one of the best is organizing a community watch, and advertising that there is one in the area.  Add to that better lighting, and you have a win win situation.  Neighbors become more familiar with each other, and more active in the community, and the lighting helps to deter would be criminals.

        Dogs.  Big ones.

We spent a few nights in a house with an alarm system, while visiting family up north.  Simply closing the bedroom window if it got a bit chilly in the night meant a trip to the control panel, first.  Pretty annoying.

I'll amend that to "large ass chewing dogs"

No one tries to burgle a house full of pit bulls.

a couple of kids broke into my house in the last week ... i'm in the middle of renovations ... and the builders left and took all their tools ... while we wait for council inspections clearance certificates on the work so far ... the kids left the window's open, the only one we forgot to lock!  They left a few chocolate wrappers and that was it ... to be burgled and have nothing taken is a bit depressing ...

I agree with the statement about dogs. If you want a big one that can be family and kid friendly, then a St Bernard works very well.

Check with the homeowners insurance company, before calling the kennels.  Some breeds will cause problems with the policy.  Pit bulls are certainly on the list (even if you call them staffordshire terriers), along with rottweilers, akitas, wolf-hybrids, and many others.  Dobermans have recently come off though, and labs are good, with a great bark for saying 'try the house next door.'

We had Brinks in California at the business and at home.  If you plan on going with some place like them.  Plan on a minimum of a year contract.  THERE IS NO GETTING OUT.  Not even if you die..someone will have to fulfill your contract.

Other than that though.  My nephew had a habit of opening the front door as the alarm would sound.  Brinks then calls you for your "code"  something obscure.  If you give the wrong word they dispatch the cops.
Now...he frequently gave the wrong code.  I have to say..while I was in bed fast asleep when this would always happen.  The cops arrived quite quickly each time.

Of course that isn't a scenario you ever want to come across.  The downside is..an open window.  They can and will set it up for you so you can open your window if you tell them how much..etc when they are out there installing it for you.  I had 3 windows I could open about 6 inches each.

As others said you can get a dog.  Problem with that is if he bites someone you're going to end up in court.  The laws aren't for the citizens you know.
You can arm yourself.  Neighborhood watch...problem with them is it usually comes down to one or two people doing the work for the entire neighborhood.

If I were you, I'd go with someone like Brinks.  They can also dispatch an ambulance..etc to you if you need it.
I think we paid something like 40 a month..might have been a bit cheaper.

Haha, a friend of mine has a pair of god awful, half trained, man eating black labs. :-/

It seems to do the trick- I have no doubt that they would chew up a burglar- seeing as how Sue's "Hi" is trying to take a chunk out of your calf.

Me on the other hand... I live a few streets down, and houses and cars in this area are always messed up. I STILL don't have a car stereo.

I just moved into a subdivision and I am at the end of a cul de sac. A VERY Dark cul de sac. )Nearest street light is approx 6 houses away) I agree about better lighting. I'm going to be installing some sort of lights (Have no clue how or what yet) around my driveway, front door and back door.

In the meantime I had Brinks security installed and while it's not the perfect solution I do sleep better knowing a piercing alarm will go off if someone tries to get in downstairs. If nothing else the alarm should wake me up fast enough that I can move the lever from safety to fire on my gun.

dont waste money on a service.

the most dangerous time is when you are asleep in bed.  A whole room motion detector can alarm you to get your gun.

If objects "look" unattended, abandoned- uncared for- they are more of a target.

Fake dog signs wont work.  Instead get a used dog dish and water bowl and chain. A heavy chian.

Now as to valuables- dont have them easily found.  Easy to get in and out. Time is of the essense in any burglary.

I might note the bedroom is the 1st place they look.

They make hidden containers- ok- they look like books, electric outlets, VHS tapes. This can be good- however it wont protect you in fire- and in some locales fire is more of a threat then burglary.

I am part of crme watch.  Look to see if your town has one.   If so join, if not- start one. Alot of things we all knew at one time then got lazy and forgot....  Join Crime watch.

right now, i've got 6'5 and 270 lbs of growing muscle that is still living with me.  when i move, i'll have a retired baltimore city homicide detective (who is quite like a human version of a pit bull ), and his gun.  (yes, tongue in cheek here)

OP, maybe you can do a combination of things?  get a security system and a dog?  better locks on your doors?  those timers you can set your lights and tv to so when you're not home it makes it look like you are?  i don't know if there is a perfect way to protect your home against those that will do anything to get in.

one of the low-tech things we have in place....bells.

a large string of them on the front door and the french doors to the patio.  you knock on the door or rattle the doorknob and they ring.  not much help if someone goes for a window, but yeah if the doors are messed with it works.

lock your windows.  not many people remember to.  turn your windowblinds to where you can get light in but no one can look in easily.  low tech, but it doesnt advertise when the place is empty, either.

I liked the one in the bronson movie too-where the burglar gets whacked in the face by a spring loaded board when he tries to come through the window.

LOL- yeah - I certainly dont live in a metro anynore.

The burglar wants in and out- quickly.

The most crime that happened to me personally since I have lived in a small town [20 years] is that I had the hood ornamant to my old Cadillac Eldorado stolen.

When I lived in Chicago- the burglaries were so often that I did not bother to report them any longer. I used to carry a knife on my car keys, then reduced down to a wistle.

There still are places in the country where people have civility toward eachother...

I can understand your bleakness.   That is sad.  Too bad you cant get out of there.  Maybe it would do you good.

Dogs and cats are not allowed by the housing associations, which is kinda sad; I'd love to have a cat.  The bells idea sound good.  I have great insurance and frankly don't care what's taken when I"M GONE but I don't want to be hurt.  I know, I'm a weenie.

LOL!  That reminded me of Home Alone ... OP, you could always study that movie and set some boobie traps.

Or you could put a deadbolt on your bedroom door.

Never had one....thought has never even crossed my mind......Having nothing worth stealing in the house is prt of the reason.  Most breaking and entering home robberies are done my folks who know what they are after and they know when no one is home.     The actual number of times a home is randomly broken into for the sole purpose of committing violence on a stranger is statistically so uncommon that I never think about it......

Most of the power of security systems is in the sign in the front yard and the sticker on the door. Those deter thieves.

And in my area, the most dangerous time is not when people are home & sleeping, it's when you & the rest of the civilians in the neighborhood are at work. Someone drives a truck up the driveway that looks like it's someone to fix something, and *poof*, before Old Lady Jenkins can even think about wondering what they are up to, the good silver is gone.
