I had an very interesting convo with a friend today...he labels himself agnostic and leans towards the athetistic. I'd say I was 'spiritual but not religious', though maybe that's changing.

Anyway we have friends in common who are very religious and we decided we can deal with the people who keep their religious beliefs to themselves but have a hard time with people who want to 'convert' us, and that we find the bad behavior of self-proclaimed religious types rather annoying as it seems hypocritical.

Now I'm kinda wondering if my friend and I are as tolerant of others' beliefs as we could be?

What about you?

Anyone coping with both aging parents and 'boomerang kids' who've 'grown' but can't support themselves? How are you coping, financially, etc.?

I probably identify the most with your friend, I'm agnostic and lean toward Athiestic. And I agree with both of you that I can easily accept other people's religious beliefs as long as they don't flaunt them and try to convert me. When I have a friend or new acquaintance that does this I will usually tell them that as long as they don't try to convert me I won't try to convert them and we'll get along fine. This is not to say that on occassion I don't mind a good theistic discussion. However, when it is them trying to convert me almost every time I see them then I eventually will just start avoiding them all together.

I don't necessarily see their persistance as being bad behavior or hypocritical. On the contrary. It means they like you and want to see you in Heaven! And usually it means that they are devout in their belief since most religions tell their congregations to spread the word as much and as often as possible.

Another thing that I have noted is that it is usually the newly converted that are the most persistant. They are still in that little euphoric bubble of having found Christ for themselves and they want to share the joy with everyone! Once they have been "saved" for a while they settle down and use more judgement about how much is too much.

Just my own thoughts.

The arrogance, self righteousness and judgement that comes with most religions is more than I can stand. Think about it. Is there any way for someone who believes they are in possession of the "Truth" to think or feel anything like equal with an unbeliever? I think not. At best it is difficult to do that. Thus they tend to look down on others whose beliefs, or lack thereof, are not cut from the same cloth.

The ways peoples religious views and beliefs are handled has always been odd to me. Perhaps Richard Dawkins expressed it best in his book "The God Delusion." In short, to paraphrase, he had this to say:

When it comes to "faith" people are basically given a pass. Their faith or beliefs are not challenged, or questioned. Anything done under the rubric of religion is treated as if it is unassailable or unimpeachable. There is no other aspect of life that is allowed this total lack of accountability.

Faith is belief in something in the lack of evidence or proof. In religious matters it is acceptable. In other aspects of life belief in something for which there is no proof is considered at least delusional, and at most can land you in an institution.

There is a direct relationship between my tolerance for someone else's religious beliefs, and whose dining room table I'm sitting at.

I disagree. The Christian religions are sometimes this was, and occasionally Islam, but Jews, Unitarians, Hindus, Buddhists, Native American and most other Nativist religions are not, as well as numerous that I've probably missed.

I'm Jewish, and I was married to a Catholic for over a dozen years. I lived in a Mormon state and a third of my coworkers then were Muslim. I've been to a Native American healing ceremony, as well as an African Methodist Episcopalian service.

Generally speaking, I consider myself tolerant, although I have serious issues with some of Mormon beliefs and their missionary zeal, as well as what I consider Unitarians' reluctance to espouse any defined religious belief system.

To be really honest, very few people in my face to face life, are people that I discuss religioun with.

I think that anyone that I have discussed the subject with knows my intense distaste for most organized religiouns, primarily the christian factors here in the US.

I don't care what others believe, if it works for them.....yippie. They had just better not try to tell me I am wrong for my beliefs.

I'm an atheist and I'm tolerant and respectful of others religious beliefs as long as they respect my lack of such beliefs. Everyone who starts preaching at me or who speaks to me assuming I share some element of faith, a surprisingly frequent occurence, I explain, once, that I'm an atheist and don't care to be preached to. After that if they try it again I'll tell them exactly how self contradictory and hypocritical their faith is. Strangely I almost always only have to do this with christians. Very occasionally with muslims and once with a hindi neighbor but mostly its the christians who absolutely cannot respect my right to not believe what they believe.

My tolerance of someone's religion is directly proportional to the amount of prosletizing they attempt to do. As long as they don't attempt to make me a convert, I'll tolerate them quite well. The instant that starts, my tolerance flies out the window - and I tend to meet like with like, doing my damnedest to either convert them to MY religion or make them shut up by attempting same. Being an avowed Pagan in the buckle of the bible belt, I tend to have a lot of... ehem... FUN when the mormons show up on my doorstep. (They're generally met in cerimonial robes that I keep Specifically for answering the door for religious types, with a small "alter" set up so that it's visible from the door. It only goes up when I see such folks on my street, and as soon as they're gone, I take it done LMAO )

Same for me: proselytising implies that the person attempting to convert you knows some kind of universal truth simply because they have 'faith'. I feel it's actually morally quite wrong: this is why I cannot stand any kind of religious involvement in public affairs under the pretext that they hold the moral high ground. Morality is a private affair; it has NOTHING to do with religion, and it should not in any way influence the decision making process in the policy of any country.

......a few of the posters here have made the point that they are tolerant as long as they aren't being preached at......kind of reminds me of a old friend from years ago who once said, "i am fine with gays as long as they don't ram it down my throat"......

this slave is uncomfortable around folks who...

"damn" her to hell, and/or desire that she and everyone else hurry up and go there this instant, for not being born into or a part of their "special" group,
promote racism, misogyny, gay bashing and the spread of STD's

...all because their religious leaders told them that's how "God" wants them to behave.

this slave enjoys the company of spiritual folks, but the religious ones...not so much.

The religions arent the problem, it is the people that are the problem.
I was raised a Jew and left that religion becasue I couldnt stomach the intolerace I saw on a day to day basis growing up.
I do not make a big deal of my religion now, but after having spent a few years looking, I finally found one that doesnt condemn everyone else for being wrong even though they believe they are right. That is why I chose the church I am in, and there are even those of my own religion I cannot deal with.

What I have found is I am very tolerant of another's belief system. It is when they take it upon themselves to try to force or coerce me into believing their way is the "one true way." My own spiritual beliefs are mine and mine alone, thus it is a rare situation that will have me discussing religion with most people. That's not to say I won't participate in a discussion regarding religious beliefs though it's seldom I will meet someone who is able to calmly and rationally discuss this topic without resorting to arguing and becoming angry.
