Well, the agnostics, athetists and spiritual-but-not-religious have all weighed in as to how much we dislike being 'preached at'....but I guess my question is....when it happens, do we make any effort to be tolerant of the one doing the preaching?

This certainly does not mean being disrespected yourself, but do we even pause a minute to realise they feel they have a duty towards us to attempt to get us to join them?  Are we  respectful towards them when we turn them away?  (Course IMO it'd be better if these religions taught people to look after their own conduct and leave others to do the same but that's another issue.)

I get a lot of soliticing here...and I tell the Jehohavah's Witnesses and Mormons that I'm Catholic and -- bingo -- they say buh bye.  It's amazing to me, but it works and I never have to say "I think you're being a jerk'.

Ever since my "alternate" sexuality has become more known, I haven't had anyone wanting to convert me. Guess the desire to have new lesbian members is pretty low. Especially after a few visits from a very HOT goth friend that likes to practice her knife throwing in a bikini (when the weather is hot) in my north yard.

I could care less if you believe in Christ, Bhudda, Yahweh, Scientology, or John Norman's bullcrap. So long as you respect my boundries, I'll try to respect yours as best I can... but, when I see you trying to enact laws and government policies that favor you and your particular group of nutcases, THEN I get pissed. (Kansas, and their Creationist BS in science classrooms comes to mind.) Or if I see you using your belief system to bludgeon, or marginalize other people and their opinions, I'll also step in then.

Personally, I believe all of mankind's religions to be utterly pathetic compared to what is probably the truth... Do I believe in God? Yes. Do I have the slightest idea of who or what God is, or what he/she/it wants from us, (if anything)? No. And neither do you! And if you claim to have some special, inside information, you're either deluded, or you are trying to sell something.

Yes.  Crap like this makes me wish I had never left Iowa, but untill we round up all the folk who think their version of (insert supreme bing here) has given then more right to the world that everyone else and find some appropriate promised land in which we can wall them all together to fight it out amongst themselves, the only other solution is to re-take the system that is in place from the fanatics who were sneaky enough that we let them let slip past us to grab the reins, and hold on tighter next time, which is what we did.

Since becoming more immersed in my examinations of the social and political dynamics and ramifications of being in a D/s relationship it occurred to be that the most popular of single deity in this world is generally portrayed in the eldest and most popular religious text concerning said deity (not to name any names.. hehe) behaves like the most selfish and insecure of dominants I can imagine.  It makes me wonder often why anyone would submit to that, but then, they generally killed anyone who didn't in the days that was written.  I do not think any less of people who follow those religions, and I have amazingly discovered it is possible to have great respect for an individual person and still have absolutely no respect for their deity.  Though I usually keep that last to my self.  Most people really hate having the object of their faith called into question.  Generally I let it sit unless I am asked personally (except here in the forums of course.  go figure).

Tolerant? As long as they leave me alone. I don't expect everyone to believe in my religion, either. http://www.stephengaskin.com/

I am respectful of the right of others to have as much or as little religious beliefs as they desire.  I have no tolerance for the ones who try to push their views on other people.

I hear you on that, SageFemme!  In general I will not discuss my own spiritual point of view with people.  In a work or casual social situation I bypass the questions by stating that half of my family is Catholic and half is Protestant and those types of discussion are best left alone.

However, I have found my beliefs are NOT respected by the majority of these very groups I deliver babies for. So, I shut my mouth and refuse to discuss my pagan leanings with a bent towards nature religions. It seems those of us with beliefs outside the mainstream have to be tolerant because people inside the mainstream are sure going to try to shove their beliefs down our throats no matter what.

Actually, I agree with Popeye.
Some 8 years ago I studied with a guy the Christian Cabala (his way of spelling). I was not about to change my path, he wasn’t going to change his. It wasn’t about that. That wasn’t the goal. I decided I wanted all the information that I could find about Mithraism and Christianity during the Roman Empire. Some of the best information came from books written by a female Lutheran Scholar and a Catholic Priest. Their mission was: this is what we know and this is what we do not know. That was the goal.
I am not the welcoming committee. I do hold some to a higher standard. There is a criteria, like it or not. Had that criteria been upfront and adhered to, a good 80% of shit could have been bypassed. For as many people that are professing to be as such, no one should encounter as much shit as they presume. If they do, then sheer numbers would counter it. Unless that scrutiny would cause someone to rethink their stance.
Its OK to skip the shit that says one must have the authenticity that pre -dates Christianity. State it. Have the balls to say, yeah…….but that ain’t it. Take the time to break it down. Its not that far fetched, once you get past the 1000 yards of attempts to make it digestible.
Just once, I’d like to see somebody actually say something about the number of rituals done in a day and the end result. The level of awareness that increases. Seems to have no problem if one looks at the BDSM element. The way for every action there is a reaction. Have the ball’s to say, that was a thought form that has taken on a life of its own and friggen haunts me. WE SHOULD HAVE THE CONVERSATIONS of your goal is earth orientated, your results are earth orientated it IS the physical realm. You played, you got. Skip the 101.

I’m intolerant of peoples religious beliefs but I don’t really understand why they should care considering their beliefs are their own anyway. If they are right and I am wrong then they can just feel all fluffy and warm about that to themselves without getting upset about how wrong I am.

Yes as long as the other person does not try and force his/her religious belief on me.  I have my beliefs and they can have theirs.

i tend to be pretty tolerant in general, and i don't even really care if people try to 'save my soul' or any of the other lines that are used on me, assuming they're respectful about it. it's pretty much the only thing that keeps my pagan ass alive in a christian family (like the time that my 13 cousin turned to me and asked how so and so could have come from a christian family, like ours). it's when people get obnoxious about it that i get angry.

i actually have more problems with academics than i have with other religions. i get told a lot that i'm 'deluded' because i still follow a religion, and paganism to boot. what, did i sleep through durkheim or something (durkheim was the guy that said that the only thing that religion does is teach us how to act in society by dangling carrots in front of us to behave and threaten us with supernatural punishments when we're bad). i guess my feeling is, assuming that my personal beliefs don't start biasing my research what the hell do you care what i do with what little free time i have?

I consider myself the world's most liberal Southern Baptist. I have friends that are gay, friends that are wiccian and others. Do I approve of their lifestyle, no do I condemn them not really because I look at myself and know that I am not perfect.

Do unto others and you would have them do unto you Luke 6:31

I have an intolerance for intolerance...how's that?

As bipolarbear said, respect my boundaries, and I don't have an issue with whatever you believe. I might actually be interested and ask you about what you believe. When you (generically) start telling me how wrong I am because I don't believe what you do, then you are being intolerant of me, and I am less apt to share myself with you.

I tend to be tolerant as long as the other person isn't trying to cram their views down my throat; then I tend to wax sarcastic. I've got a fundamentalist friend who believes the world was literally created in seven days......but he believes each Biblical reference to wine should properly refer to grape juice. When plagued by Jehovah's Witnesses, I goad them by thelling them God's real name uis Harold (Our Father Who art in Hearven, Harold be Thy name.) I can't help myself.
Tolerance applies to casual friendships; in order for a serious relationship to take place the other person's beliefs would have to be compatible with mine, though not necessarily identical.

Has your family threatened to kill you or physically/emotionally/financially harm you?  I had a coupla death threats slipped under my door when my  'family' and thereby the Southern Baptist community in my area found out I was an athiest.

But to the OP-  I'm in the large consensus of respect me and I will respect you.  If I find a rational religionist (a oxymoron of biblical porportions, pun unintended) that genuinely wishes to have a intellectual discussion, I will oblige them.  I have never had that opportunity.  I have found that being an athiest in a country that the Xtian majority have the gall to pull out the persecution card when they feel threatened by truth is best treated like carrying a legally licenced concealed pistol. Don't let anyone know that dosen't ABSOLUTELY have to.  I was refused service at a truck stop restauraunt because a pair of truckers was talking about "scientists are stupid" and "evolution is a lie" and I was sitting nearby and got dragged into it.  When I told them that I was a athiest and asked them if they even know how eveolution worked (99% of religionists have no clue how it works, they believe their pro liars and spout it as truth) the waitress over heard me and asked me to leave because she "couldn't serve the Antichrist.."

So in short, I'm fairly tolerant, but very little has ever come my way.

I'm a part of a spiritual group that has a very clearly worded rule "When you attack other's beliefs, you attack your own." So yeah. I don't attack other's beliefs and I do my best to respect what others want to believe in.

Honestly, I do find some religious pratices to be very mean, disrespectful, or otherwise unsavory. Again, I try not to attack, I just keep my mouth shut.

However, I do like to debate and discuss. I think if it's kept in friendly terms, religious discussion can be edifying and interesting.

I politely decline offers of conversion, making sure to point out that it isn't the religion that disgusts me, but the person's assumption that he/she knows what is good for me. I find it to be annoying and presumptious.

Other than that, I get along well with others from very diverse religious backgrounds. Generally, I don't talk about my own, because it requires a three hour lecture to make sure that people have even a ghost of an idea of what I'm talking about. Yeah...my spiritual group is...esoteric. Some people who are well aquainted with Indian philosophy and culture will get it, but very few others.

it has been stressed to me that i don't tell my father, for fear of what may happen if he found out and realized that i'm serious. i don't think it may come to blows but i honestly don't know.he's going to have to come to terms with it soon.

yes i have an issue with exaggeration-- but then so do a lot of people. shrug.
