Reuters reports Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Viktorovich Lavrov says he is "receiving reports of ethnic cleansing in villages of South Ossetia" as violence escalates Friday in the breakaway province.

Edited to add: According to Fox News.

Georgia cabinet minster says Georgian troops are in control of capital of South Ossetia, four Russian warplanes shot down; Russian military officials claiming 10 "peacekeepers" killed, 30 wounded in fighting.

"Ethnic cleansing?"
"Peacekeepers?"
Is Bill Clinton back in the White House?
Is he "watching the place" while Bush is in China?
I guess we're supposed to be "against" "ethnic cleansing?"

Nothing. Russia is not the enemy today that they were in 1963.

Nothing anyone can do. The United States does not have much leverage in that area of the world. Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia are stiill very much in Russia's sphere...not ours. And Russia is very protective of that area because going back to the days of Joseph Stalin, those countries act as a buffer to protect Russia from Turkish nationalism and from muslim extremists. Tensions and conflict between that area and Russia are certainly nothing new.

In the end, the US cant do much other than send diplomats and peace envoys. Russia is not an enemy and we arn't going to threaten them.

Russia just invaded a sovereign nation. A sovereign nation that has tried very hard to join the western developed world. Think back to those bygone days of 1990 and 1991. We definitely had something to say about one nation invading and conquering another back then.

If the US was not wasting blood and capitol in Iraq rapid reaction forces could be deployed to Georgia and Putin would have to decide whether war with Nato was desirable simply to gain control of Georgia.

Your suggestion that Russia is not our enemy shows an fairly unbelieveable lack of knowledge of the world. Putin's Russia is our enemy and nothing about that will change while he controls Russia.

Yeah and how many sovereign nations have we invaded in the past? Russia didnt threaten us when we invaded Afghanistan and Iraq....they could have. We are fighting two wars and have half our armed forces in their backyard, and we are threating to put missile intercepters in their front yard. Meanwhile we are making allies with all their neighbors. Now if you are Russia, how would you intepret that?

And your solution is to put NATO forces in the Caucauses? You think Russia is going to roll over and back off? Are you really in the mood to start World War III?

Russia is claiming that they moved in to protect the folks of South Ossetia.

What would a guy like JFK do right now?

He'd have made it worse.  You may want to read up on some of the things that JFK did that we are still dealing with today.

The Baath Party takeover of Iraq happened with CIA assistance in a coup authorized by Kennedy.  Baathist Party members were given a list by the CIA (under Kennedy) of Leftists and intellectuals.  They proceeded to murder most of the people on the list, and one of the hitmen was a young Saddam Hussein.  Kennedy than armed the new Baathist regime with modern weaponry.  So thanks to JFK; the Baathists came to power, millions of Iraqis died because of it, and we've fought two wars in the last 20 years there.

Let's not forget Kennedy's ineptitude with the Bay of Pigs invasion, and his escalation of the Vietnam War.  Kennedy ordered the CIA to assist in the coup to overthrow Diem, because he believed he was going to set up a coalition government with Ho Chi Minh.

If it hadn't been for Lee Harvey Oswald, JFK would have went down in history as a mediocre president.

Why should this be a problem for the U.S. to tackle?

This is in Europe's back yard...

The Euro  must be awfully weak after all - practically worthless.

Actually the dollar climbed vs the Euro to a 7 year high today, didn't see the close, but that was the news around lunch time.  Speculation was that with the interest rates not being lowered again that the economy was gaining strength.  Oh and guess what oil dropped another $6 today.

To the topic though, it is pretty sad that the tradition of a ceasefire during the olympics was not observed.  It was kind of surreal watching the opening ceremonies this morning, as Georgia's athletes were assembled next to the Russian athletes. I had the news in the pip.

I was referencing another kind of currency Thadius.

Yes its sad, sad that everyone who bashes America for helping the people of Iraq now bash America for this, when it should belong more to the Europeans than the United States.

It doesn't "belong" to anyone but Russians and Georgians.

Have you never heard of George Santayana? He had something to say about history you might want to take to heart.

First it was Austria then the Sudetenland then the rest of Czechoslavakia then Poland and tens of millions dead.

What will it be this time if we sit on our hands? Georgia then Armenia then the Baltic states? Will it be hundreds of millions dead this time? Let's not find out. Putin needs to stopped and stopped hard and right now.

Back to the cycle of totalitarian government to anarchy; butcher, pillage, rape and repeat.

It's bad news; looks like Georgia was trying to stop Ossetian separatists and that Moscow is on the side of the latter, or at least that the Russians are using this conflict as an excuse to interfere and impose their will on the Georgian government.

Russia's pissed off at Georgia for getting closer to NATO and the EU... I hope this doesn't turn into an other Chechnya :-( .

good ally?   russia isn't even close to being as good an ally as georgia, who has more troops in iraq than any other ally other than britian.    if the US doesn't support georgia it'd be like shitting in their face after everything they've done to support our government.

personally I think every single government in teh world sucks and hate them all pretty equally, however, I know how everyone calls the american government hypocritical, which is is.

but consider this,  chechnya has wanted their freedom from russia for 2 centuries, fighting for it through insurgency off and on through out it's history.

russia complains about this, and then turns around and doesn't just discreetly support the insurgents in georgia, but is now directly fighting their war with tanks and war planes.

it's all gonna blow over though, teh rest of europe isn't going to tolerate russia provoking world war III

DomKen, you sound like a Republican.
Why should the U.S. get involved in any other country's problems?
We don't have enough problems in this country that need attention?
So, ...you'll be picking up a rifle and off to Georgia eh?

.....newsflash. No-one can ever win an ideological war without having some ideals to live up to. If, as the US has done in the past, they end up propping up or otherwise supporting a country that engages in wholesale human rights abuses on the basis that they're a good ally (Pakistan, Israel, Chile) then such an ideological war can never be won.

Slvemike, and why make it smaller?
I'm tired of other countries and "special interest groups" wanting to get the U.S. involved in "their" problems.
That is all.

One would think that those on the Left would be against "Imperialism".
Funny, they sound like *Republicans* when they start talking about "Intervening" in the problems of foreign countries.
Iraq is "not ok" but Darfur "is ok?" Who decides?
Isn't this what the "U.N." is supposed to be doing?
I just don't want *my gov't* getting involved in these kinds of things.
It's simply not their job to do so.
