ORIGINAL: LichPrincess Good idea, Alix. I suppose I have this idea in my head of what a Domina is supposed to look like, corsets and vinyl skirts, etc, and forgot about any other options. I'm by no means an expert, but here is what I can share of my thoughts and experiences: Definitely, take a moment and think how *you* would prefer to look and dress while in a session. After you've decided the ways you're wanting to look in sessions you can then deal with clients seeking the way you look and/or what you do. If overtly fetish gear suits you, do what you'd do in a social setting: dress in only those manners you feel beautiful and comfortable (both as yourself and in physical ability for the activity ahead... corsets are not terribly suited to some types of play). Once you've decided on those ways, advertise those as options (if you feel powerful and comfortable in a schoolmarm-ish outfit and have them to wear, advertise yourself so. if you love latex getups and have them, advertise yourself so. et cetera). If you don't like overtly fetish gear, pick the outfit styles you have and like and advertise yourself that way. You don't have to be Stereotype Dominatrix unless you wish to and will be able to rock that in play. There are sub- and bottom-clients that like all sorts of looks and many who don't care what you wear as long as they're getting their fetish/kink-need filled. And then some that you'll find you both just clique, as with any social or work acquaintance. If you put things on you're self-conscious about, spots showing or style of gear or whatever, you're not going to enjoy your time in session, your unease is going to show through subtley to your client. Advertise yourself and your interests in topping/dom'ing and then weed the subs that contact you despite a clear lack of match (because you can say all day I don't do X or wear Y and you'll still get plenty asking, begging, for each).
