We used to let kids fight it out between themselves...now they no longer have the option to slug it out and shake hands afterwards with a better understanding between them and of themselves.  Now it is call the cops because they can't be allowed to release their emotions in a healthy physcial way.

You need to spend some time around my family then............especially a certain 4yo and 5yo, that wail on each other every chance they get.

[clip]... I'd suggest reading a book called "He Said, She Said" by Dr. Deborah Tannen.

It explores the differences between the way men express themselves and the way women express themselves in speech. It won't teach you exactly what a woman is thinking at every minute of the day...but it will explain how women use speech to get to the same goal as men, but in a very different way.

Is it anything like the Mars/Venus books? The occasional good point, mired in over-generalizations?

Naira, good recommendation!

Deborah Tannen is a sociologist.  She is (or was?) professor of linguistics, at Georgetown University.  She takes a scholarly approach, observing the ways males and females relate to others and communicate, including differences in body language, group dynamics, use of speech, expression of emotions, etc.

It's easy to find her books.  She writes in an accessible, engaging style, and at the same time, her work is well regarded professionally.  I find her observations astute, very informative and interesting.

You've really made me want to return to this book, as I haven't read it in years.

One little thing I've found interesting, since reading her observations on males in the company of other males, is that since then, I notice the same body language and dynamics portrayed all the time, in the male interaction in action films.

Can't people, men and women alike, just talk? Say what we mean? Of course, I know the answer.... things would just be so much simpler....

Blasphemy!

I've found that a "look" can speak volumes. That way you can also blame the interpretation on a misinterpretation. Leaves the door open for lots of wiggle room.

Not that I would have ever done ANYthing even remotely like the above..............nooooo, not meee.

Missokyst -> RE: Understanding women???? (8/9/2008 11:54:14 AM)

To understand women, you have to pay attention.  We are all different.  We are either talkers, or we are not.  We either mask things, or we do not.  ect ect.  You either learn to pay attention or you will fail.

Yes, with the number of single mothers and absent fathers in the world, what would a woman know about accountability?

Oh yes because there are NOOOO cases of single fathers out there whatsoever. Right.

We are a fascinating piece of machinery. Poetry in motion.
Women are complex creatures.
men are simple ones.

Yes, fascinating in the sense that they often make no sense. Men are simple because there is no reason to be otherwise. (Incidently, as far as multitasking goes, if I'm not watching TV, chatting online and surfing the web, I'm bored. It's rare that I can sit and do only one thing these days)

If women truly are "more complex" then it is to their detriment. It'd be the rough equivelent of starting a space program and building a mars lander just to cultivate a field of corn on earth -- un-necessary.

The best example I have of this analogy is the "problem."

A man will have a problem, and he will fix that problem. Later, he may go on about what a pain in the ass the problem was, but now it's fixed, so he's just blowing off steam.

A woman will have a problem, and will whine about said problem. If a man attempts to fix said problem, the women will get angry and say she doesn't want him to fix it, just "listen." And that makes no sense. That's essentially saying she's fien with the problem, but will talk our ear off complaining about it. For what?

Truthfully, I'd much rather be "simple." I see a problem, I find away to fix or get around said problem, I do it. Task over.

Aynne -> RE: Understanding women???? (8/9/2008 12:33:58 PM)

Smith I do get what you are saying but that is one of the biggest issues I have with Sir too.  I just want to vent sometimes, he cannot fix all of my problems, no matter how much he wants to, or attempts to, and yes often times he has. But sometimes, it is something that cannot be solved, at least immediately, and because he is not only my love, my romantic partner, he is also my very closest friend so he is the one I turn to to talk about my problems. Sometimes we girls just want an ear to listen, and a big strong shoulder to cry on.  We don't expect you guys to fix everything but we love you for wanting to. [:D]

This goes back to what I've said in other threads about how a man must, to some extent, simply "not give a shit" while simultaneously appearing that he does.

Since women go against logic with their approach to problem solving, a man has to go against his baser instincts and not care whether a woman's problem is fixed or not, unless it directly affects him.

StormsSlave -> RE: Understanding women???? (8/9/2008 1:18:21 PM)

I have generally found it to be true that the men who are the most inept at handling a woman are the first to blame the "irrational nature" of a woman instead of their own shortcomings.

MizSexyVixen -> RE: Understanding women???? (8/9/2008 1:22:15 PM)

Women are not -supposed- to be understood, merely adored.

I have found the opposite true -- that men who are the best at handling women are that way because they understand the inherent irrationality. They expect it and they compensate accordingly.

Those who can't expect or compensate for that flaw, do tend to blame it for their problems, while those who can blame it for their success.

To deal with a woman properly is to acknowledge that to one literally steps "through the looking glass."

Understand women? I can't understand men!

Someone help me please...*L*

(Edited to correct typo.)

Men are quite easy to understand. It's just hard for women because women read everything imaginable into what a man says.

This is true...at least for me. :)

ORIGINAL: Smith117

To understand a man, all you have to know is he says what he means and he means ONLY what he's said. Just because he asks "where'd you get those shoes?" Doesn't mean he thinks you spend too much money or that they make your ankles look fat or that he doesn't love you. He means "where'd you get those shoes?"

When a man is hungry, he'll eat; tired, he'll sleep; horny, he'll fuck or jerk off if the former is too much work. And whent he game is on, don't interrupt.

That's pretty much it.

Hmmm..are you sure there isn't more going on? At least with some men? :) I've heard this said before, but sometimes with some men, I get a different impression. *sigh*

I would tell him to stop trying to understand "women" and get to know the "woman" he wants to be involved with. We are each as different as snow flakes with our own unique qualities, trying to lump us all into one category is foolish and a waste of time.

Best piece of advice on here! :)
