What do you think it is that you all don't like about being on a phone?  I get the in person meets..lol.. but just wondering what it is about the phone that gets to you.

My phone issues are more general, not specific to moving from online.  I don't even like using the phone to talk to friends and family.

Same here -- I just generally don't like phones, period. I -make- myself get on the phone once a month to call my dad, and twice a month each to call my sons across country... and I do the "how few words" exchange with my Darling -- how few words will it take for her to give me the info she called for, and let me get off the phone? She, on the other hand, is a "chatter"... she can sit on the phone for HOURS talking about nothing -- or even not talking and just sitting there breathing while she works on something on the other end of the line... it's an interesting dance. I'm trying to get -off- the phone, and she's trying to keep me -on- it! (I suppose one of us had to be a phone person). The only bad thing about it is when she calls internationally--since we got rid of all the phones but our cell.

i'll exhange #'s in case one of us runs into a problem on the way to the first meeting - but i'd rather skip a phone call. What do you say to someone you've never met in person? Unless it's someone i've been chatting with online for an extended period. i'd rather meet rather quickly. After all, if there's no "spark" it probably isn't gonna work anyway and i'd rather find that out sooner or later. After i know someone a bit, phone conversations aren't bad.

I loathe talking on the phone to people from online. Hate hate it. I only give my mobile number when a face to face is sorted, in case of train/tube problems.

I dont have a landline and live in a basement with no reception, so phone convo's at home arent possible.

Even if it were, I would not do it! I have been accused of being a fake, a man, because I wouldnt give my phone no. So I turned on the cam, waved, turned it off and blocked!

Hmm, I also get a little nervous before and during first phone chats, but other than that I'm OK with it. As long as the conversation starts to move along and I find the person on the other end is as interesting in verbal conversation as they are in online chat, I relax a lot.

Overall though, I'm just not that big of a fan of the phone. Often times, the other party is on a cell with poor sound quality and I have difficulty hearing them, or they're multitasking between me and scolding someone in the background, yada yada yada. That stuff can be annoying and sort of turns me off of the whole phone thing.

My only advise: Find fun people to talk to!

I have a great phone voice.  :-)

The phone is a tool. Use it appropriately.

I have never had a person abuse my number.  I have had bussinesses abuse it.

oh when out and about you can say anything in public- just touch your earlobe if you say anything un-neverving.  ;-0

You're definitely not the only one, TN -- I hate hate hate hate HATE phones.  I can't even call to order a damn pizza without getting freaked out.

And I never answer my phone.  Very rarely will I pick up, the rest of the time it goes to voicemail and I'll email or text the person back.  God forbid it's a number I don't recognize, I'll make my boy listen to the voicemail for me.

I think phones killed my father and raped my mother in a previous life or somethin'...

Yeah! I'm not the only irrational phone-a-phobe!!! I can't quite put my finger on what it is. I know there's this feeling I get that I'm going to be bothering or inturrupting someone, or might be, when I call. I think that comes from (as another poster mentioned) my father going on and on about people calling during dinner time when I was growing up. He would just piss and moan about it constantly. He'd put down my friends if they did it and refer to them as "that kid who always calls during dinner" or something like that. Just generally be a real jerk about it. I guess that would tend to put a knot in one's stomach that maybe on the other end is someone doing the same thing when I call.

OK- so I guess what I have to do is make the other person PROMISE (cross your heart hope to die kind of promise) that I can call and it's not dinner time. But you know, some of them might be the sneaky type who would say that, and THEN go right to the fridge just to spite me!!

I'm going to work now.

Another phone phobe here. First, it helps if you tell the other person about your phobia and that you won't talk for more than a couple of minutes. Second, write down things you want to tell them and keep the notes next to the phone. And then move on to a Starbucks near you.

I've always disliked the phone... I used to have pretty bad social anxiety disorder, now I'm mostly better (still pretty shy, at least at first though), except when it comes to phones... Outside of a couple friends and family members (who I obviously know well), I'd almost rather die (or something) than make a phonecall, most of the time... Even if I want to make whatever call, I just get too nervous to actually do it. (And then feel depressed about not being able to do it)

The same for answering the phone, really.. most of the time I'll just let the machine get it and see who it is first.

It really doesn't make any sense, but, yeah.

Once I'm actually talking on the phone, though, I don't have problems, even if it's not someone I know well...

So, fnord.

My problem is the opposite. Every guy I meet on the web is phone phobic. I hate asking if he would call me or if I could call him. I think guys should do that. But they never do, so I do, and then they think I'm being too forward and not submissive enough. And then say something like, I'll call you when I'm ready. I like to go slow. Dangit. I don't want to go "slow." It's not moving fast, it's called I'm impatient. All I would need is like one conversation to see if there's any chance we will ever like each other. I'm very attracted (or not) by the way someone speaks, the sound of his voice, etc. You can sense whether there is any chemistry right off the bat, or if the person is a complete moron. I think people should start talking on the phone with the second day of talking on the internet, really. I dunno how many times I've talked to someone for months, because they are a slow poke, only to have it ruined with a first phone conversation. I'd rather get it over with, and not get attached.
