This is exactly the type of thing I don't want my government doing "for" me.

Before we go off on a screaming tangent here, use the energy to do something important to you. If it's to save energy and cut our dependency on crude oil, do that. If it's to save starving orphans on every continent, do that. Instead of complaining and whining and jittering off ridiculous made-up statistics ~briefly looking at cuckyboy~ and instead of aiding and abetting hatred, do something productive.

Americans are known for their generosity in giving aid to the poor in the form of food, medical supplies and personnel, building basic infrastructure and providing basic education. The Peace Corps are a good example of American philanthropy as is the Red Cross.  This makes me proud of the US, that we step up to help and assist those who are so desperately in need.

Edited to add - There are also folks from some local churches who organize a donation drive and take a bus down to Mexico once or twice a year with clothing and school supplies.  And we have the wonderful volunteers for Doctors Without Borders and Habitat for Humanity as a few other examples.

Click on the tabs for previous years.

An interesting thing I noticed was the jump from pre-2000 to post-2001.

I wonder what these figures would show if they were related to the number of people in each country. Its easy for a wealthy country with a large population to appear generous - give a lot of money, but if  it was broken down per capita, it may show a completely different picture. I'm not knocking what the government of the US is doing,    ....  well, maybe i am a little, but i don't think it is quite as generous as it appears.   Just saying.

Yes, but the US spends 498 x that on arms production.

The US spends 10 x more money on military expenditures than the next closest rival nation.

The rest of the world combined spends less than the US.

I figured you would chime in with something like that, which is why I titled the thread the way I did.

I am sure you could do a quick look up of the populations of the countries on the list, and figure it out.   You can go to just about any other international charity, and you will see the same sort of thing.  Only the numbers become even more skewed because it includes the donations from citizens.

That isn't the way to do it.
If individuals want to donate that's the way it should be done, not by "governments."
It's just not the job of governments to be doing that kind of thing "on behalf" of individuals.

One of the biggest problems for agriculture in the under developed world is the developed world dumping food (as opposed to emergency food aid) which destroys  the local agricultural economy. Both the US and the EU are guilty of subsidizing their farmers and dumping the excess on the under developed world. In fact most aid from the developed world aids the developed world more than the under developed world.

If the US and the EU were serious about helping the under developed world they would stop subsidizing their farmers allow free trade, making their farmers compete with third world farmers. Of course, neither the US or the EU will agree to that and until they do, their aid is meaningless in just about all cases but emergency aid., much of which might not be necessary in a free market.

Besides, charity begins at home. Or so I hear, anyway.
