Not at all, I was just restating what you put into words.
Thadius ,would it be safe to say that these tanks are no longer in position to protect South Ossetians from the egregious ethnic cleansing being perpatrated by the Georgian military?

It depends on what your definition of protect is...  One could I suppose argue that wiping out the Georgian government would technically be protecting the South Ossetians.

From a more rational position, I would say that the T-72s reported around Gori and Poti are definitely not preventing anything in South Ossetia.  I would even suggest that part of the protection plan was to damage as much infrastructure and faith in being free as possible, with the hopes of influencing those that are suffering from the invasion.

Just my opinions,
Thadius

From where I sit and what I see Thadius, those opinions look pretty good  ...Putin has sent a signal to all of the former "republicks",the signal being this is still our yard and don't stray too far.

Thadius -> RE: Georgian president's Russia claims raise eyebrows .WTF is this about? (8/15/2008 2:07:19 PM)

That is exactly how I see it as well.  The question I keep asking folks that make excuses for the Russian invasion is, will these same excuses work if Russia decides it needs to "protect' certain folks in Ukraine?

Daes -> RE: Georgian president's Russia claims raise eyebrows .WTF is this about? (8/15/2008 2:07:55 PM)

Thadius - I Did state that I believed they overreacted. This includes tanks =P

slvemike4u - I've been looking at all sides. The main thing that is driving my opinion is the fact that South Ossetia and Abkhazia  now want sovereignity under international law due to Georgia's attacks. They also did not make any statements that led me to believe that they wanted Russia out.

In fact they seem pretty happy with whats going on >.> It gives them an excuse to break away from Georgia. Is it only coincidence that the leaders of S. Ossetia and Abkhazia meet with the president of Russia and then soon after, Russia tells Georgia that he can Forget about those territories cause he's not giving them back?

Just my thoughts.

All well and good Deas but those tanks are in Georgia now ,not the break away provinces...and those would be Russian tanks would they not.Russia who declared that Kosovo had no right to her own separtist ambitions,Russia with a brutal history of supressing national aspirations for 50 plus years as the Soviet Union...no on this count and in this case I don't for a minute believe Russia to be an honest broker of peace and stability in the region...and given it's history can't see how anyone else can. This is Putin pulling the strings and trying to reassert the days of the old Soviet Union, his institutional memory from the old KGB glory days is shining thru here, and the west must contain HIS ambitions...

I made a mistake in claiming Russia had direct veto power.

....but your ability to make such a simple statement is one reason why you are respected on these fora, regardless of whether or not people agree with your analysis.

I'm not defending Russia and I dont believe their tanks should be in Georgia. I'm also not defending them when I state that I understand why Russia did not want Kosovo to become its own independent state. Russia was concerned about its own providences within its nation.

Russia won't leave Georgia until it proves a point, and it certainly won't leave just because the "US says so"

Daes I certainly agree with your statment that Russia won't leave simply because the "US says so".That being said ,if you will pardon the pun,the US has many other bullets in thier "gun",up to and including it would seem stationing American troops in Georgia in an Humanitarian capacity.Which purpose I am confident they are serving at,but they are also a tripwire that Putin should think twice about tripping. This situation just got inherently more dangerous for our adveturesome ex KGB head!!!!

Thadius -> RE: Georgian president's Russia claims raise eyebrows .WTF is this about? (8/15/2008 4:17:06 PM)

Well as part of the new cease fire agreement that is exactly what is going to be happening, international peacekeepers are going to be put on the ground in Georgia.

slvemike4u -> RE: Georgian president's Russia claims raise eyebrows .WTF is this about? (8/15/2008 4:24:12 PM)

And will those international peacekeepers be serving under the very shadow of Russian guns? In other words still a very dangerous situation...right!

CNN is reporting...
http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/08/15/georgia.russia.war/index.html?eref=rss_latest
quote:

They are not permitted to patrol in Gori and other Georgian cities and cannot hamper aid distribution or control ports, highways or railroads, the officials said. The limited exception for the Russian peacekeepers is allowed only until a more robust international peacekeeping force can be deployed.

Not sure what that means, I would suspect it will be UN forces, as Russia has already demonstrated its dislike of NATO troops.  Time will tell.

I don't know Thadius ,there seemed to be more disturbing news in that link you provided than good.Including more posturing and chest beating by Russian President Mendvedev, Putin's handpicked puppet..

I agree that there is alot to wonder and perhaps worry about.  Being the the hopeful fool that I am, I am hoping for the best.
