I think there has always been a tendency for relationships (whether M/s, D/s, or vanilla) to take place just because of the coincidence of two people being involved when the urge to form that particular type of bond. How many unfortunate marriages have you encountered that wouldn't have happened if the couple had not been involved with each other whenthe urge to settle down struck? The Internet merely offers the opportunity to speed up that process. My thought is that "instant" relationships are inherently flawed. While there may be an immediate and powerful chemistry between two people, this does not mean that there are sufficient shared goals, values, and desires from which to forge a lasting bond. I may be old-fashioned in my belief that true compatibility is based more on friendship, respect, trust, and love, but I think it also holds true that a master cannot instantly learn enough about a prospective slave in order to function either effectively or safely. Sadly, too many people want to rush something which can only develop over time.
