popeye1250 -> Car Price Question (8/18/2008 3:39:12 PM)

Ok, if a dealership has a new car on sale for say $40k how much is the manufacturer charging the dealer for that car, $20k, $25k, $30k?

Musicmystery -> RE: Car Price Question (8/18/2008 3:49:30 PM)

Dude, all that information has been available for DECADES from a number of souces. Consumer Reports used to be the gold standard, but now a host of Internet sites have that info.

Enjoy.

P.S. The federal government also provides wholesale information on ALL goods sold, even broken down by state and region. Just research.

Check out Edmunds or KBB online; both have dealer prices.  Use CarFax to avoid a flood-damaged car from Katrina.

I am  in the business, although not on the sales end. The mark up on a new car is generally between 2 and 4%

and no. I am not gonna do the math...:)

Hello matey!
Do your research and look around, take your time.

Talk them as low as you can, and don't be afraid to leave!
If the salesman doesn't have to go talk to his manager several

times, I feel I am not doing my job right.[:D]
My ex-husband used to admire me in the dealerships.
I fucking love car salesmen.
There is also some service someone told me about where you can get
into a competition between dealerships online.
Let us know how low you get them to go.

popeye1250 -> RE: Car Price Question (8/18/2008 6:20:44 PM)

Mia, I bought a new Cadillac STS friday afternoon.
I haggled the price down to $34,900 but they fucked up bigtime!
I turned in my Mercury Grand Marquis which listed for $10,200 and on which I owed $4,848.
They gave me "$10,200" for my car and listed "Payoff on car by customer"  ..."N/A/"!
So, they have to pay off my car and they gave me full price trade-in value for my car for a total of $15,000.
And part of the paperwork that I signed was a form signing my Mercury over to them so now *they* own it and the $4,848 payoff!
The contract says that "there is no cooling off period" and they checked the box on the bottom that says "Issued with No Recourse."
So, looks like I'm stuck with this great contract that they fucked themselves on!
I signed the contract and by the time I got home there were 3 messages on the phone for me from the dealorship! lol
The same thing today.
Man! They fucked up bigtime but, a contract is a contract!
If *I* wanted to change it I have, "No Recourse."
Someone wasn't paying attention!

P.S. I just love those young college kid salesmen!
"I graduated from the U. of Tennessee."
"Oh,...is that so!"
("Obviously not an ARITHMETIC major.")
They all know algebra and geometry but they can't do arithmetic!

MzMia -> RE: Car Price Question (8/18/2008 6:27:41 PM)

LOL
Good for you!
The buzzards deserve it!
I will be chuckling all night saying "no recourse"! [:D]
Enjoy your lovely new car!

The markup in the new auto sales is a deceptive figure, since it does not reflect rebates, incentives, and special pricing that allows the dealer to make a handsome profit no matter how low they go in relation to the numbers they let you see.

In the world of guitars for example, an ordinary off the shelf $4,000 - $5,000  list price guitar costs the typical music store a little under half that, and they can do quite well selling it at 10 to 15% 'sale price' reduction from the MSRP... say $700 off.....   High volume mega stores like Guitar Center may get a slightly better price, but due to less overhead, they are also able to slice deeper, knocking say, $1,000 off while still managing to stay in business, and send their kids to college.

Guitar strings on the other hand, drop in cost to the merchant with every rise in quantity ordered, and time as a customer of the distributor... so a set of nothing special strings list priced at $14 doesn't cost the store $7, but $6.50 minus 15% minus 10% minus 7% minus 3% plus a special rebate/spiff/whatever to order more...ending up actually costing the retailer $3 something over the course of a year, and thousands of sets sold...

Cars are priced like the strings, so at the end of the year, when a dealer has sold a lot of cars, the actual profit is not a reflection of any of the listed prices. And that is aside from the profit made financing the cars...

Specific to the OP, with a MSRP of 70K, a sale price of 40K, a bottom line great deal of 35K, 25k would probably be closest.

sophia37 -> RE: Car Price Question (8/18/2008 6:32:52 PM)

is this a trick question? My guess is, if the dealer is charging 40 grand for a 350 V8 that gets five miles per gallon, then the manufacturer sold it to them for 65 thousand and theyre now taking a loss. But lets say its a 40 MPG 4 cylander for 40 grand, it cost the dealer 20 grand and theres a wating list of 12 months and whover has the cash takes the prize!!

impishlilhellcat -> RE: Car Price Question (8/18/2008 6:32:55 PM)

I had a friend interested in a pontiac vibe brand new so she got online priced what the car would cost for all the stuff she wanted in the car and then called every dealership in our area pricing the car. One guy told her a price and she said okay thanks he said that's the best dal you are going to get for this car in a snotty tone and she said oh really cause so and so has it for this price... he stutters and goes oh well we can work something out.. she said no thanks I don't need to do business with you.. He tried calling her back.

Mia, it's a leftover 2008 with all the gadgets and bells and whistles!
It stickered for $54k
It's "pearl white" with a saddle interior, bose suround sound 10 speakers system, navigation systen, XM radio, I love the comedy channels!
The seats remember where you like them and go back to that position automatically and are heated AND cooled.
And when you open the door to get out they go all the way back to make it easier.
I have a telephone in there somewhere but I can't find it!!!
They gave me 6 months free telephone service and I can't find the fuckin' thing!
One time I pushed a button and a women's voice said, "I'm sorry, I didn't understand your request."
I said, "Well fuckin blow me!"
Again,..."I'm sorry I didn't understand your request."
"Shut the fuck up!"
"I'm sorry, I didn't understand your request."
So, I don't fuck with that button anymore.
I have "ONSTAR" too in case of emergencies.
"Hey! I have an emergency here!"
"What's the trouble Sir?"
"I just shit my pants, can you send someone to my house to get some new socks, undies, and pants, the smell is grossing me out here!"
"And this is a brandnew fuckin' Cadillac!"

Quivver -> RE: Car Price Question (8/18/2008 6:43:22 PM)

From what I understand on a New unit the dealer actually makes little.
They make up for it in financing, aftermarket sales and service.
The real profit is when they sell that Trade in.

Jeffff -> RE: Car Price Question (8/18/2008 6:45:22 PM)

Exactly.. if people just bought only cars and paid cash a dealer would have a hard  time staying in business.

Finance, insurance, extended warranty's ( which I highly recommend) all add up to  gross profit.

Add a profitable parts and service dept and they do  pretty well.

When buying a car it is important to remember every part of the transaction is negotiable, although much rests on your credit  rating

Jeff

Assuming you got the base model, which retails at a suggested $43,000 give or take, the invoice is roughly $40,000 flat. Of course that doesn't really cover all the "trunk money" that the manufacturer give the dealers. That's the money that still allows the dealer to make money, even if they sell it to you "at cost." Most will not acknowledge this to you and will claim you're robbing them by haggling, but they are still getting theirs. It's widely known, mainly due to former salesmen that have confirmed it. Hell even the leasing company knows about it.

As for their screw up, I don't know what your payments are or your interest rate, but it's safe to assume they got you there as well. In my first new car purchase about 7 years ago, I haggled them down to sticker price for the car...which of course seems ludicrous on my part, until you factor in that my trade was only worth somewhere near $2K and they gave me $6K for it which also paid off the $4K I owed on it.

Now I felt really good about myself and my ability to haggle until it donned on me that I was so rabidly pursuing the trade-in value, I completely ignored the interest rate. I'd say it was a pretty mutual fucking. Of course that mutual fucking turned more one-sided when I learned that the same car back in the states (this was in Hawaii) was almost $10K less than what I paid for it *and* also when you factor in that the piece of shit died and had repeated problems for the two years I owned it. When the battery went when the car was barely 2 years old and the service tech told me that the A/C panel lighting and the electrical system were completely unrelated systems, I went car shopping again that day.

On that purchase I got me a new, 22-year old or so kid. And I was a (polite) complete and total dick to him. My negotiating skill on that purchase helped absorbe the upside down nature of my previous purchase, so some degree.

Back on point, I'd go over your contract and check the other bits if you haven't done so. You think you fucked them, but it might have been mutual. Or.....the kid could really have been an idiot. However, it's not the salesmen that work the contracts, but the business office. So if it's truly a fuck up, MANY had a hand in it and I want their number. I wouldn't mind having a $34K cadillac.

Edited after reading your recent post to add -- A $54K cadillac for $34K? Yep, they got fucked and HARD. Can I have their number?

faerytattoodgirl -> RE: Car Price Question (8/18/2008 6:48:55 PM)

what if this kid now has the responsibility to pay off that $$???how is he going to do it at that kind of job he has??? which he'll likely get fired from ...but still have to pay....

i doubt the company is going to pickup the tab.

MzMia -> RE: Car Price Question (8/18/2008 6:50:15 PM)

Wow what a beauty you got.
You have all the bells and whistles now.
Thanks for the chuckles!

You need to look into your owner's manual and find the telephone.

I am sure it is voice activated.

[sm=car.gif]Enjoy!

Well, they won't make much on my trade-in, it's costing them $15,000 and they may get $12,000 for it.

And dealers from coast to coast have gotten quite rich being 'taken to the cleaners' by all the people who know how to put one over on them...[;)]
