You pretty much nailed it there....

I know when I'm on a whitewater trip and we're running anything semi-tough with consequences, and the dudes I'm rolln' with have brought a friend along with whom I'm not familiar - I give em' a little pep talk about the river and our strategy....and then I point to the black dog and tell them '' I hope you can swim better than that dog.....because if we get into any trouble, I'm saving that dog before I save you ''

I love my two labs so much that I absolutely would put them before most humans...

All I can say is the cop is a prick!! When I was little the sheriff had to Dobe's that were police dogs. There was no vet in my home town so the closet one was 30 miles away. One of the dogs had gotten ill and almost died on the way to the vet. The cops in the next town didn't even bat an eye when the old cruiser roared into town. I love my cats they are my babies. God have mercy one of them get sick.... The company I work for works closely with the police here... and they would have to ticket me after I got my pet to the vets. I woudln't stop but then again I don't think I would be doing 95 plus miles an hour.

Well, my view is the cop was an ass, by saying that, but still that gives them no right to drive a 100 mph, in a distressed state. Again, I'd trade any of the lives of any person on this board for my dogs without a seconds hesitation, but if they were sick, and dying, I wouldn't be driving a 100 mph. I'm just not going to endanger my life, and 100's of others lives, for one life.

I think if I was the cop, in that situation, I'd have loaded the dog in my police car, got the owner's drivers license, and took the dog myself, at blazing speeds. Seeing a police car is equipped with a siren, and lights, at least it's marginally safe, to speed at a 100 mph.

They would have gotten a ticket though. But once I understood the situation, I'm 100% sure if I was a cop I'd immediately focus on saving the dogs life.

Now, if it was a person dying, well, they'd have been there all night. LOL. kidding.

Can't blame the cop for pulling them over since they were breaking the law. But the cop's comment was pretty heartless. It's obvious he never had a pet before in his life. For many people, pets are like a member of the family. They have their own unique personalities. You can't just go and buy another one.

if you read what i wrote you would see that i also love animals. i've had to do lots of things to help them that others would think is silly and dangerous. that's not the point.
look at the video from the cop's view point. you have a person traveling at a high rate of speed, in the dark, on a highway and who did not initially pull over when the cop flashed his lights and used the siren. when the officer pulled them over and told the driver to come out of the car, the driver was screaming and hysterical. we have no idea what the officer was thinking. the cops i know would instantly be on guard, not knowing if the guy was on drugs or had an actual emergency. the officer showed no empathy with his response, i don't argue that point at all. he was also reprimanded by his superiors for his actions. as the chief of police in the video said, the officer should have never made the statement that he did.
in the end.....in my opinion......both the officer and the driver showed poor judgement in their actions.

95 mph? totally unsafe.

Of course, the officer was an idiot for acting in the manner he did, deliberately chatting with others to make sure the dog wouldn't survive was wrong. But if he had let them go, I'm betting they would have been racing at unsafe speeds again inside of a mile. If they had killed someone by driving that fast, the excuse that they were trying to get to the vet wouldn't excuse them of vehicular manslaughter.

The cop was obviously wrong in what he said. I would have been on his side if he would have said.

On a serious note, I think both parties are at fault, obviously speeding is not acceptable, and the cop could have shown a bit of compassion. Perhaps, offered to escort them to the vet at a reasonable speed, at which time he could have processed the ticket.

Are you having trouble with the audio portion of the video? The driver says "she's dying" not "she's dead." It was even reported by the news that the dog was, in fact, alive for 15 of the 20 minute traffic stop. Therefore, yes the traffic stop DID cause the dog's death.

I have news for you. In my younger days, when pulled over by a cop for doing "the same speed as everyone else" I would often pull away from the stop and hit close to 120 within a quater mile just to prove a point....if only to myself. The thing is, in those situations, I'd rapidly accelerate, then taper back off. If I had a medical emergency in my car, there'd be no tapering off.

And I have to disagree with your assessment of their "potential" charges in the event of an accident. I've only rarely heard of vehicular manslaughter being used in a speeding accident. They may be charged with "something" but I highly doubt that'd be it. Not only that, but we're not a jury, so there's no way to tell what they would or would not be convicted of. Most decent lawyers could demonstrate their state of mind during the accident and have it ruled as exactly that, an accident.

Someone else in this thread has brought up "state of mind," and it's a very good thing to mention. Because in this country murderers have gotten off because they "weren't thinking clearly or rationally" at the time they shot/beat/killed someone. Nearly everyone in this thread has stipulated that the driver in this case didn't appear to be acting "rationally" due to his worry about his pet. If a handful of strangers on the internet can agree that he was not in complete control of his faculties, a jury would have no trouble coming to the same conclusion and the guy would likely walk.

I just watched that video of the stop and that driver was in NO SHAPE to be driving a tricycle, let alone a moterized vehicle and it appears that the cop was right in keeping him off the road until he pulled himself togethere a bit. Yeah, what he said about the dog is over the top to some, but, at the same time, those remarks AND the reaming out he gave that guy did help him to get his head out of his butt. Just how much time did he think he was going to save at that rate of speed anyway. For the distance he most likely had to travel (estimating under 30 miles) he would only save seconds while more the doubling the risk of wrecking his vehicle and putting both himself AND his girl friend in the hospital or killing them. Needless to say that wouldn't have done that dog any good. Also, traveling at that high of a speed, he vastly increased the risk of running into another vehicle and either injuring or killing the occupants. Is a dog, ANY dog, worth that kind of risk??

In my opinion, that cop did exactly the right thing by getting him off the road until he calmed down and by rapping his teeth with that calius remark about his dog and then rubbing his nose in it all by telling him how stupid he was being.

I realize that some of you are probably thinking that this jerk has never had any kind of pet he has gotten attached to. Let me set the record straight on that. I have owned dogs for about the last 20 years and more then a few of them have become members of the family. They will eat off my dinner plates and are loved like they are 4 legged kids. BUT, I will NOT get on the road and drive like an idiot to get them to a hospital for any reason. That includes my current house dog, Lady.

Fry the guy over 95? Hate to tell you then that you want a significant portion of the roadways empty then. I've seen many driving that fast just for kicks. At least a medical emergency is a decent reason. Most don't even have that.

well I hope they ALL get tickets then. the speed limit is there for a reason. for the safety of travelling. this isnt 5 miles above.... more like 30. In some states he would not have a drivers license for that. [or points added]

Someones mom could have been killed by this guy. He deserves the ticket. We all have gotten tickets. Its the cost of driving.

Exacly. Hell I knew a guy in high school bragging about doing that around a corner in a corvette his dad owned. And this was a guy I wouldn't let touch my old carolla, let alone what I drive now.

When I was young and stupid "as opposed to being old and stupid" I would drive in excess speeds of 125 mph all the time. Most of the interstates are made for those speeds .. or faster. Now secondary as well as back roads are another story. But then again.. you don't see German people driving autobahn speeds on those type of roads either.
