BeachMystress -> “Chill out, it's just a dog, you can buy another one.” (8/19/2008 4:08:44 PM)

I'm curious to see what people's reactions are to the traffic stop in San Marcos TX that lead to a dog's death. I especially am interested in responses to the police officer's remark “Chill out, it's just a dog, you can buy another one.”

I have a very special dildo with this cop's name on it.

Obviously, the dumb ass cop has never owned a pet in his life. I love my pets, and although I'm not one to treat them as surrogate children by any means, I've still been pretty broken up whenever one of them dies, or gets sick. This is my friend we're talking about here... my best buddy.

The cop deserved to be bitch slapped.

CalifChick -> RE: “Chill out, it's just a dog, you can buy another one.” (8/19/2008 4:17:00 PM)

Both parties were in the wrong.  The guy should not have been driving 95 mph, putting himself, his partner, and everyone else on the road in danger.

And the cop is a dillweed.

Obviously, the officer was a 'cat' person.

After reading the whole story, that's a great new method to beat a 95 MPH speeding ticket. Except now that it is public I'm sure the cops will be prepared for it.

Sorry Beach, but with the 'ex' coming to town, I'm feeling more 'evil' than usual.

i'm not only shocked but slightly outraged.  i can not believe someone has the stupidity to say that to someone's face........Come on......Where's the common sense!!??

Most I know here are in agreement that we'd never have heard him use that line. He'd be pulling us over in the parking lot of the animal clinic. Maybe an arrest, but the dog would be at the clinic first. And my lawyer would be on the way.

Apparently the cop in question forgot what it was like when the police dog was killed by a suspect he was chasing. They gave that dog a police funeral. They didn't just shrug and "buy another."

One of the best and favorite dogs I've ever owned was so awesome. He even refused to eat for 3 days when I left home for the service. That dog was the coolest 4-legged friend I've ever had. If HIS health were threatened, 95 MPH would be my rough "cornering speed."

My car may only be a 4-banger, but it can still hit a buck twenty or better.

Yeah.....I may wear the cuffs, but my buddy's gonna live. Four-legged or not...it's a life, and I intend to save it.

As a dog lover....I think that cop needs a size eleven Nike right up in the crack of his ass.... I also hope an attorney in the Melvin Belli mold grabs this case and turns it into a public relations nightmare for the San Marcos PD. Hell....I hope PETA comes down and stands in front of the PD every day for a month...

I will say that if the same situation were to occur in my town, I'm very confident every one of the nine or so cops would help out. But all it takes is one indignant turd

Our animals are our babies - I wouldn't have stopped until I was at the vet clinic ... but I also wouldn't have been driving 95.  What good does it do to hurry the dog to the vet, only to flip the car and kill it anyway?  Most cops around here would follow you to the clinic and then ticket you ... but then again, we're all rednecks here so almost everyone has their own pet and knows how hard it can be.

I would say chill out it's only money, you can make more once I am done sueing you and if you loose your job chill out you can always get another one.

Cops have alot of dicretion when it comes to things like this. This one should have used some. I would've grabbed the guy's license and insurance card and told him "Go, and don't speed, and you are getting a ticket when we get there". Let whoever was with him take the dog in and give him a talking to.

He endangered human lives for a dog. I know people get attached, but you still don't do that. What's more driving like that could have created another emergency, and the dog would be dead anyway, along with some people possibly. Look at ambulances, even with lights and sirens they don't go that fast. They know if they get in a wreck they just make things ten times worse.

I think it's more of a question of how you view the life you're trying to save. There are people who view their pets as their best friends, some even as their children, for better or worse. And they look at it like they're saving their child.

It all comes down to the individual and the circumstance. Someone who doesn't care "that much" about their pet will react differently than one who, for example, was right there watching the dog get born, raised him from a pup and took care of every little need as the pup grew up. That's a deep, emotional bond and if I had a dog like that again and he was in trouble, yeah...I'd risk a ticket. I don't care.

Driving fast doesn't always equal a wreck and there's always judgement involved. The car in this case was driving on the freeway.....it was night the roads were relatively clear. I didn't see a whole lot of traffic passing by on the dash cam video I saw.

This is not to say that the guy in this case would have done 95 no matter what, dodging in and out of cars. It's that he was clocked going that fast at that particular moment. Hell I've gone that fast to make a movie before in my younger days. And I've seen crotch-rocket bikers go twice that speed just for kicks. (Not saying that makes it right, of course.)

Another factor is whether the person can handle their car effectively at that speed. Some can't handle the pressures of going 60. Others can go 100. Those that can go 100 don't necessarily do so at rush hour or when road or weather considtions make it dangerous. I know when I used to drive to east texas on those long desolate roads, 80 would have been "slow" for me.

There was an incident recently where a member of my family asked me to take them to the ER because of surgical complications. The person was in lots of pain and was about to call an ambulance when I got home. Although she said later that she didn't feel like she was dying, It was still scary. On the freeway headed to the hospital, I don't think it's inconceivable that I might have hit triple-digits.

Just because someone is concerned enough to drive fast in an emergency situation, doesn't mean they aren't paying attention or taking caution. Racecar drivers go upwards of 300 MPH surrounded by a pack of cars. It's not ridiculous to think a person in light traffic can safely do near-100, especially on the larger roadways.

i completely agree with the above statement.  i love animals.  i also love living and driving like a maniac endangers everyone.
watching a pet suffer is horrible....i've had to make the drive to the animal ER with a convulsing dog that i had to put to sleep.  ending up in the hospital because i was driving 80 miles hr and caused an accident would be worse. that would be the best case scenairo....dying in a car crash is not my idea of a good thing.

And we know the dog would have survived if they cop had let him go 95mph the rest of the way...?  It sounds as if the dog was already so close to death there was no way to save it.  (What did they feed it that killed it is the better question).  I would trade a teacup poodle for any human life in a second.  He shouldn't have been driving 95 mph.

Dashboard video from both Stephens’ patrol car and that of Officer Joyce Bender clearly showed that Gonzales was frantic when pulled over and that his first words after getting out of his car were “She’s dead.”

The cop shouldn't have said what he did the way he did and is new on the force (less than 2 years).  He was reprimanded and sent for counseling, which I think was appropriate.  The video of the couple's driving was reviewed and the department decided that pulling them over HAD to happen as it was far too reckless to allow to continue...

You can search youtube for the video...the people were frantic and nonsensical on the video and putting people at risk going 95 mph weaving in and out of traffic over a dog that was ALREADY DEAD when they were pulled over.  I love my animals and they are like my children, BUT I have been in emergency situations with them and human family and I drove above the speed limit but not that fast and not that carelessly.  The human loss of life that a wreck at that speed would cause outweigh the dog's life.  They deserved the ticket.  I think the complaining about 20 minutes and all that is just a way to put pressure on the department to drop what is going to be a very expensive ticket.  They are hoping the public doesn't read the bit about the dog being dead at the beginning of the stop...

That's inaccurate according to the news. The dog died 15 minutes into a 20 minute traffic stop. She wasn't dead when they pulled over. The driver also repeatedly said "she's dying."

My favorite dog has put himself in harm's way for me before. I would see nothing wrong with returning the favor. Cops' dogs protect them, sometimes at the cost of their lives. Cops have charged those who killed their dogs with assault on an officer, at the very least.

It's not that unreasonable to drive that fast on a freeway. Hell most people on the freeways go that fast already.

The video clearly says 'she's dying'.
