Sand. The answer is sand. Thermaculite does not like sand. Sand does not like Thermaculite. They despise each other and, simply put, sand trumps Thermaculite.

Copious amounts of sand in the bottom of the dishwasher at the beginning of each cycle (yes, that means you'll have to manually stop the machine between each cycle to put more sand into it) will clear that Thermaculite right out.
