I watched as much of it as I could this year. Personally I really liked watching the guy from Togo win the only medal that country has ever received. The little moments like that are what make me still watch. I like watching the athelites from the smaller countries who aren't doping and getting paid huge sums of money win and stand on the dais to get their medals. To see the pride and happiness of years of work. As much as gets made of doping and pay and age and everything else that gets thrown about. Thats what the games are truly about.
That guy from Togo made the games for me this year.

What did Togo compete in? I missed it and want to see if I can find it on Thadius's link.

ahhh well as a pom i have to say it, especially after the aus sports director said of us getting some medals in the pool "its good for a country with no swimming pools and hardly any soap" tut tut :P

LMAO I didn't hear that! But if my childhood memories serve me well ... he was right wasn't he? [:D] Or maybe there's been some more recent developments over there ...

The Togo athlete was Benjamin Benjamin Kudjow Thomas and he won Bronze in the Mens K1 kayak single. Not sure if there is video footage of it though.

I'm curious how china's going to look after all of this... Underage gymnasts, a girl's voice being used but not her face because she wasn't pretty enough; imagine if America had done things like that. The world would be throwing flaming bags of feces over the atlantic and pacific.

Re criticism of China's hosting of these Olympics:

Relatively small potatoes considering the big picture and what a success these games were, don'tcha think. People will always find something to criticize and bitch about. China has come an awful long way in recent years in transforming their society.. The Chinese deserve recognition and encouragement for this.

Finally, let him or her whose country is "without sin cast the first stone". Remember the Munich games ? Berlin just before WW2 ? I think China did a great job in the opening and closing ceremonies promoting themes of harmony rather than Chino-centric or political . Recognize an olive branch when you see oneand reward steps taken by a government, imperfect as it is (whose isn't ? ), for moving toward freedom, international responsibility and a better life for it's citizens.

What came across to me - strongly - was the significant underlining of their major cultural shift; a nation which for centuries has been introverted and has avoided contact with other nations, no colonisation, no visitors, is now aiming to take its place in the outside (economic) world.

I felt the games sent a very powerful message confirming what started a while back economically, that the world is going to change. May take a decade or two, but sheesh, what a change it will be. Think Microsoft domination but on a massive scale.

I'm with you cj - it'll make the world a different place but let's meet it with open arms not closed minds.

(And cj - I just love this - you've wickedly and inconsiderately used an apostrophe where none is required. Your "a better life for it's citizens" is short for "a better life for it is citizens". Please take more care on the boat or it's cleaning its heads for you). [:D]

SunDude, I agonized over that apostrophe for some time ( it seemed like forever ). Thanks for kindly pointing out my error.  I blame it on my Jesuit education ( nah, can't do that, can I ? ). Ok, I blame it on the rum induced drain bamage over the years. No, wait, I can always blame it on Greedy Top.

CalifChick -> RE: Olymipics (8/27/2008 9:56:08 AM)

I blame it on the nun that corrupted ya.  Just sayin'.

I hear in the US they list the medal tables by total number of medals so that they come ahead of China.[:D]

Yup and when the US wasn't leading in total medals, they still listed it by totals. Wonder why they did that?
