GOP Veep Sheet: McCain ponders Powell

I hope he does--they could make a formidable team.

I think he should go away from the usual suspects.  Go with a Gen Petrayeus, Michael Steele, Kay Bailey Hutchinson, Meg Whitman, or a pick like this.  Powell wouldn't be a bad choice, I just don't think he is interested in the job.

Yeah, the question isn't so much if McCain would pick Powell, but would Powell pick McCain?

However, either a McCain/Powell or McCain/Lieberman ticket would make for an interesting horserace come November.

I don't think the Republican party would go for Lieberman on the ticket... again he would be a great Sect of State pick.

The party elders wouldn't like him, but I think they would tolerate/accept him in order to keep the White House.  As the saying goes:  "the enemy of my enemy is my friend."

Republican voters I think would be more than tolerant of him, although he won't make any red voters swoon.  Just the fact that the Democrats threw him under the bus in his last Senate campaign makes putting him on the ticket a nice "fuck you" sort of gesture to the Dems.

The GOP is welcome to Lieberman. His habitual lying will fit in quite nicely there.

Powell should learn his lesson and stay out of politics. There is all that great footage of him shoveling grade A bullshit at the UN and he still has never dealt effectively with his part in the coverup of My Lai.

I think Powell was burned too badly when he served in the current administration to go back into the thick of it.

To say the least! They saddled him with fake intel, and told him to stand up in the UN and sell that pack of lies. Then, when the truth about those "portable anthrax labs" came out, the administration threw him under the bus.

Powel might consider being part of a Democratic administration, but I think he'd rather kick the GOP puppetmasters in the teeth.

I don't think Powell sees McCain as an extension of the Bush administration, and secondly, I'd be beyond flabbergasted if McCain picks Lieberman.
 
As I've said, if McCain does get Powell to run, that would sway my vote.

Um, actually---he lost the primary. We call it democracy. Sucks when you lose, but there it is.

He ran as an Independent then, and won. Nice when you win. But clearly he has to have expected that this would change the landscape.

I'd be shocked to see either him or Powell as VP. Both carry too much baggage with some voter or another, and Americans aren't noted for their insightful analysis of candidates.

Considering they`re tied at the hip.literally and figuratively,Joe is the obvious pick.
 
How would McCain function with out Joe there to whisper the correct answers in his ear or step up and correct McCain himself?

Bagging Connecticut would change the traditional delegate math and Joe could make the difference in Florida.

Joe will be losing his Senate seniority soon,so his political future is tied to a McCain victory.If McCain loses,Joe loses big time.

As much as I hate to say it, Powell would not be acceptable to either party as a VP because of some of the scandals in his background.. like being part of the coverup of My Lai.

Now back to the realities.  McCain will not pick Lieberman at least not for the VP slot, I think he will be offered a great cabinet position.  For one, what does it add to the ticket?

Like I said, before the best pick would be a Meg Whitman type pick, it would garner some more of the female vote, it would shore up the economic creds, and be something completely unexpected.

Then again, I am just a simple man and cannot even fathom what is going on in the decision process.

I can't see Powell bringing anything to the table.  McCain has the "defense" side of the ledger locked up against Obama and Biden.  Obama wants to leave, Biden wants to split
Iraq into three pieces....Same old..same old.... 

If McCain nominates anyone but Mitt he's senile.   Romney brings brains, experience in
governing, in-dept knowledge of economics, and a history of working with democrats as he
proved in Mass.  (wish I could spell)...Mainly, he also would energize the conservative base.   On top of that, he is a good debator and will be more than able to more than hold his own against Biden and, in fact, maybe goad Biden into one of his
"Ted Baxter" foot in the mouth comments he is so famous in doing.  He also has been "warmed" up for the fight with the primary experience under his belt. Old Joe...is a democrat...and should have switched this year when his vote could have changed the complexion of the Senate.  After November, he is of no use to anyone if the dems build their Senatorial majority.

It absolutely won't be Lieberman.  No way, no how.  To select a VP from outside the party is unnaceptable and McCain doesn't have that much Republican love going for him as it is.

Emmm ahh, the same old same old, ........is staying in Iraq,.........endlessly.Just to bring you up to speed.

McCain lost half his military credibilty last week,when the US and Iraq signed a deal to withdraw combat troops,ie,the Obama plan,

Considering the military is donating many times more money to Obama,I don`t think McCain has them sowed up.Maybe the old foogies and some retired vets feel that way,but the dynamics are totally changing.The military wants out of Iraq too.

Mitt is a stuffed shirt with more flip-flops than McCain.

Just a couple of things, this is the best spin I have seen from you to date.  How much more money is the military donating to Obama over McCain?

If you are referring to that article somebody posted around here recently, one those numbers were only through the end of June, only represented 323 total donations in their figure and were from "troops abroad".  The way they figured the troops abroad was any mail from an fpo or apo, which could include civilian donations, and also include multiple donations from the same individual.  Hardly a decisive sampling.

Looking at the over all donations from military to individual candidates there has been a total of (as of June 30th) $1,151,412 to the top 5 candidates.  Obama received $335,536 of that, and McCain $280,513.  I am willing to put money on it that those numbers will have been reversed since then (McCain has received more than Obama), and will continue to broaden in favor of McCain.
