i dont know, i know people with money and not that they are snobs having money does make some people less in touch with reality for example the problems i have dont even cross their minds, doesnt make them bad just differant and thats regardless of being born with money or earning it

RedMagic1 -> RE: Modern Day Aristocrats (8/26/2008 5:16:35 AM)

I agree with you, colouredin, but that seems like a separate thread topic.  More precisely, I could say: people in different socioeconomic brackets face different problems, and are often unaware of any other type of problem.  And yes, people with less money tend to face problems that are objectively more serious.  But that's not the same as thinking that I am better than X person because of what I play on my ipod.

colouredin -> RE: Modern Day Aristocrats (8/26/2008 5:20:17 AM)

ahhh but thats not ness to do with social class, people from all sorts of backgounds are obbsessed with appearing to be well off and label obbsessed (think the fall and fall of burberry in the uk) not ness a class distinction, i also dont think all forms of culture are class based some of course are but that doesnt make them more valid, my feeling is people like the OP must be dramatically lacking in many other areas of him self to specify how important that is to him

O NO! RUNNN!! RUNNN before the scary cultural differences sneak up on you and

Swine or no swine... has anyone in the service industry- IE waitressing or pizza delivery (This wouldn't apply to you silver-spoonies, go on with your trust-fund self!) noticed that people in the  low-middle class bracket tend to tip a hell of a lot better than the upper crust? That's always been interesting to me.

Am I the only one who saw the subject of  "Modern Day Aristocrats" and thought of the old dirty joke?

No, you're not the only one who thought of it.  I never looked at Bob Saget the same way since.

Aileen1968 -> RE: Modern Day Aristocrats (8/26/2008 5:40:09 AM)

I don't know this joke...someone want to tell it already.  [8|]

phoenix92901 -> RE: Modern Day Aristocrats (8/26/2008 5:48:19 AM)

I recommend the movie "The Aristocrats".  In it, comedians take turns telling their version of the same dirty joke.  Not for the easily offended.

"Your not a lady, Your nothing but a sista"   loved it one of my favorite sayings of all time

i find that saying right for all most any occasion. My son hits my daughter and my daughter says, your not supposed to hit a lady, and (ill whisper in the background, Your not a lady.....)

And sometimes it doesn't matter how much money one has or material posessions they own, when they are morally bankrupt.

I'm sorry but pompous looking or not I just gotta agree with this guy. All of the above, with a few exceptions like really old George Jones, give me the heebie jeebies.

I dunno... I think I'd take a beer over this guy who keeps mailing me on the other side, telling me how unhappy I must be without his yachts, and his mansion, and his wine cellar. Now that gives me the creeps.

-Liking beer over expensive champagne- sure why not
-Liking the good stuff over a keg, hey sure go for it.
-Thinking you are collar-popping *amazing* for having expensive tastes... not so much.

It is considered the dirtiest joke of all time.  Here is Gilbert Godfrieds telling a bit of history of the joke and his version of it.

Thanks... here's Bob Saget's version.  Between this and Dave Coulier recently admitting that he was the inspiration for Alanis Morrisette's "You Oughta Know" (who knew she had a thing for cheesy Popeye imitations?), I can never watch "Full House" the same way again.  But that's just me.

~fast reply~

I believe that aristocratic bearing goes beyond whether someone enjoys opera, fine wine, fine dining, etc. It is a manner of interacting with the world in which one hold oneself to a standard, and behaves in a manner that supports that standard.

My darling and I maintain a "household". We both have ties to Old World nobility, and we've attempted to hold on to some of the dignity of our family history, even here in the United States where such things are not commonly appreciated, and are often even treated in a derogatory manner (as if, by our holding of ourselves in that place, we are somehow denigrating others).

As an example, we recently attended an opening night of an opera here in Houston. I was raised in the Northeast, where people -dress- for the opera... especially for opening night. That is how I was raised (and how my Darling was raised as well), and so we did. We were most surprised to discover that many of our counterparts in the audience wore torn jeans, stained t-shirts, and ratty boots, and that we were sorely overdressed for the event, but it was our first outing for this type of event in this area.

As we were leaving the performance, one of those audience members threw a soda at us, called us rude names, and ruined my Darling's gown. This person's behavior was met with catcalls, laughter, and more rude comments from others in the general area, and not -one- person stepped forward to see if we needed help, or to assist us in getting our car. We were not abusive to the individuals who chose not to dress for the opening night of a major cultural event -- but from the laughter and catcalls around us when we were attacked, it is apparently perfectly acceptable for those who -do- exhibit their appreciation for the gravity of an event like an opening night by dressing for it to be mistreated and attacked. Dignity and aristocratic bearing didn't come from our clothing, though -- it came from retaining our own self-respect and from refusing to stoop to the level of our attackers by responding with rude comments, etc.

I have to wonder what it is about people that they feel the need to tear someone else down in order to make themselves feel higher and more powerful.

For the OP -- if a more aristocratic bearing and interests are what drive you, by all means celebrate them. It is not unlikely that you'll find others who share your interests. Getting involved with the local Opera Society, and Theatre Arts Society, as well as connecting with the theatre society at your school may give you more opportunity to meet people who share your interests... and it is always possible to cultivate someone's interests in a given area, if they're not completely opposed to it (for example, though I love blood rock, metal, alternative, industrial, etc.... I am completely turned off by rap and the new R&B--so trying to get me to develop an appreciation for those would be unlikely... but if you wanted to get me interested in operatic rock... you'd have a good chance of being able to watch me cultivate a 'taste' for it.) Also -- just goes to show that "cultured" tastes and baser enjoyments are -not- inimical.

Calla, this saddens me greatly.  I moved away from Houston not quite 14 years ago, and while I lived there, I attended several performances at the opera.  It was certainly not as you describe it "back then", which doesn't seem like all that long ago.  Most of the audience wore cocktail attire, ladies in black dresses, beaded gowns, etc., ... many of the men in tuxedoes and if not a tux, then certainly a nice dark suit.  I usually wore an elegant, if plain, black dress with an ornate necklace, and I usually felt a bit underdressed.

How very sad.

Good grief!! Sad indeed. Why would anyone pass up an opportunity to get all dressed up? I mean seriously, I love it and it is becoming an ever increasing rarity in my life.

SilverMark -> RE: Modern Day Aristocrats (8/27/2008 11:39:00 AM)

I ran across this topic by accident and it may be one of the most entertaining ones I have ever read!
I am entertained but also amazed at the pomposity some show. Absolutely hilarious responses!

LaTigresse -> RE: Modern Day Aristocrats (8/27/2008 1:51:28 PM)

I agree! (but only if I didn't come across as one of the pompous ones........[:D])

I know you were kinda joking, seababy, but the dividing line here isn't between peasants and not.  There are CM message board posters -- and people with active profiles on the other side -- who are wealthy, and yet manage to avoid being pompous snobs.

The dividing line, in my experience, is whether you made your money yourself, or inherited it.  People who actually know it is important to work, and to demonstrate responsibility to others, tend not to be hi-falutin, even if they can afford to attend any concert in the world.  On the other hand, people who were born with a silver spoon in their mouth often show it, by "buying titles" (SirLordOfAllBDSM), or constructing a pseudo-Old Guard house where they can live as undisputed king until their money runs out -- and the needs of the rest of the world be damned.

Well yes I was joking. (strange for me) and I do agree with you.
It was a knee jerk reaction to the snobbery of one of the posters.
Do I have interests and tastes that parallel some of theirs? Well yes I do.
Do I have titles in the close family? Yes I do. Does that mean I have to take out membership in "Pompous Asshats United"? No that's not mandatory.
