From canes to capes, leather or denim; What are some of your aesthetic values and why?

If you feel as if none are relevant to your D/s relationship please include why.

When you get dressed in the morning, what message are you sending your sub?

"Viewer interpretations of beauty possess two concepts of value: aesthetics and taste. Aesthetics is the philosophical notion of beauty. Taste is a result of education and awareness of elite cultural values; therefore taste can be learned. Taste varies according to class, cultural background, and education. Poor taste is usually seen as a product of ignorance. According to Kant beauty is objective and universal; thus certain things are beautiful to everyone. The contemporary view of beauty is not based on innate qualities, but rather on cultural specifics and individual interpretations.

A third major topic in the study of aesthetic judgments is how they are unified across art forms. We can call a person, a house, a symphony, a fragrance, and a mathematical proof beautiful. What characteristics do they share which give them that status? What possible feature could a proof and a fragrance both share in virtue of which they both count as beautiful? What makes a painting beautiful is quite different from what makes music beautiful, which suggests that each art form has its own language for the judgement of aesthetics.
At the same time, there is seemingly quite a lack of words to express oneself accurately when making an aesthetic judgement. An aesthetic judgement cannot be an empirical judgement. Therefore, due to impossibility for precision, there is confusion about what interpretations can be culturally negotiated. Due to the inaccuracy of the English language, two completely different feelings experienced by two different people can be represented by an identical verbal expression. Wittgenstein stated this in his lectures on aesthetics and language games." - Wiki

I don't have any "domly" outfits.  I don't own a single piece of leatherwear (not counting shoes).  I don't have a whip, paddle, or any other parephenalia.  There is nothing that I do whatsoever that contributes to any sort of visual aesthetic in terms of me being dominant.  When I get dressed in the morning, it's sweats nowadays since I'm semi-retired.  Frequently, I'll swap into something a little less grubby before she gets home from work.  The message I hope I'm sending her is that I care enough about her to be visually appealing to her.  None of these things are relevant to my D/s relationship.  The only thing that is relevant to that is where the authority sits.  Mine doesn't need me to dress in a particular way before she acknowledges my right to command her.

While it is certainly true that visual appearance carries important messages, me and mine have been together for 13 years now.  We are well past such surface things.  She knows who I am well enough now that it doesn't need to be cued by clothes.

Depends on the morning :)  All clothing is costume to me, just depends on how literal I want to take it.  sometimes the absence of a symbol is most symbolic.

This is exactly how it is with Master and me.  If you call khaki shorts and Hawaiian shirts from Goodwill "domly," then He's the "domliest dressed" guy in town[:D].  Neither of us have any desire for Him to dress up in leather pants to show He's the boss.  In our world, it's utter foolishness.  This works both ways too.  I don't have to go around naked, wearing only cuffs and collar to show I'm His property either.  Though I do sometimes[;)], it's not necessary to Him to show I'm subservient.............luci

A cape and tights, and a big D across my chest, standing for Dominant,

Whenever submissives pose a threat, the Commissioner flashes the Dom-signal to alert me.

Seriously, the message I send my sub when I dress is, this is how I dress.  If I'm going to work, I wear work clothes.  If I'm working around the house, I wear schleppy clothes.  If I'm going out, I wear suitable clothes.

DomDolf -> RE: Aesthetics of a Master (8/27/2008 6:19:55 PM)

I dress appropriately for whatever activity I am participating in. Whether it be work, boating, scening, gym, sleeping, whatever. I have no intent on sending a message to my submissive with the way I dress. It's when I'm undressing that she may be getting a loud and clear message. Especially if the belt comes out of the loops before the pants hit the floor.

BKSir -> RE: Aesthetics of a Master (8/27/2008 7:53:04 PM)

Well, I have a nice black waistcoat, top hat and cane, but, those are usually my normal wear during the winter.  Well, the cane sometimes during the summer.  It's never fun to have two pins in each knee permanently.  Stupid sports...  God I miss playing. ;)

Otherwise I just wear what I wear.  My pet does love when I'm in my compression shorts and tank top though... can't say as I blame him for that though. ;)

My aesthetic values aren't something that I wear, but rather what I make a girl wear and that tends to vary. The most powerful for me is her wearing my collar, but really it comes down to any change or alteration I make according to whatever whim is going through my head. That is what is most aesthetically pleasing to me and sends a pretty clear message of who's the boss that leather pants just simply don't convey.

realtuffdom -> RE: Aesthetics of a Master (8/27/2008 8:21:00 PM)

The playing card that I attach to my bicycle's spokes is always a king card to show I'm a real dominant. That immediately tells all the subbie girls that the man riding the bicycle down the street is a true dominant!

Leatherist -> RE: Aesthetics of a Master (8/27/2008 8:22:29 PM)

If clothes make the man, that's a pretty sorry-ass manequin ya got there buddy.

Quivver -> RE: Aesthetics of a Master (8/27/2008 9:20:27 PM)

A spark in a eye.
A smirk on the lips.
What dresses the rest I'd never notice.

Lynnxz -> RE: Aesthetics of a Master (8/27/2008 10:12:16 PM)

My domly-dom wears either cargo shorts or jeans, and tshirts... long sleeves if he's working.

He would look awkward in assless leather chaps I think...

Dnomyar -> RE: Aesthetics of a Master (8/28/2008 6:41:09 AM)

What he wears reflects what the day will involve. But he usually doesn't make me guess if he's going to change the oil in the car or not by what he wears. We talk about stuff.
