Maybe it is because I have an 8-poster bed, but I'm noticing a trend for tops with limited or no bondage experience going for the spread eagle tie for the first time out. 
It seems to me there are simpler yet more interesting ties to be tried, even right off the bat.  Do ya'll tops remember in the very beginning a predilection for the spread eagle?  or a continued preference for it?  If so, why? 

allright, two people is barely even anecdata, but my cliche sensors are totally tripped.

I like this tie for effective immobilizing. .Hands tied together in front,and cinched up to a tie around and just below the neck keeps them out of the way. Then a wrap between the elbows in back.

Finish it by tying the knees and ankles together- Using the swell of the calves to keep the first wrap from slipping. Then running the same tied off rope out between the tie for the ankles,and up to a ring bolt about four feet up on the wall over the bottom's head.

Put her on her back and force her legs up and back with it.

I like this one for ass torture and butt fucking.

I have a predilection for binding into positions that allow me access to my favorite parts.  I don't want to hog-tie someone I intend to spank.  Then I have to undo it all again and that just gets annoying.  I like simple bindings and simple positions.  Bondage is a utilitarian activity for me.  Additionally, I tend to like to keep things kind of simple and basic when first playing with someone so as to get a sense of our play styles first, without overwhelming him or her with elaborate rituals that don't yet have relevance.

i'm sure you can find the elusive 8 poster bed in the same area as the spread eagle, although i've heard that bald eagles are much easier to find. [;)]

four posters, with return posters (to casually drape the curtains out of the way)

see?  excellent choices for tying that is functional and, well, tight.  I'm short, so a spread eagle takes a lot of rope.  all that 'taut' rope means way more movement.
as well as not taking like 15 minutes to get it done...and then undone when you want to turn [me] over.

I do whatever is appropriate for the purpose of the bondage. I want the bondage to assist me in accomplishing my goal.

The spread eagle is good when I want her to be able to see me and feel completely exposed.

Trust me, I'd spread Eagle somebody out, it's because I want to spank that Bald Eagle senseless or some other thing.  Plus, easy and quick nipple access.  Up and down the whole body, full frontal access.

It would be like having somebody face out on a St. Andrews Cross all spread Eagle as well.

I think your 8 post bed is so hot, that guys just can't help but want to do this.  I mean that's an 8 tie off spread Eagle.  Not just any spread Eagle tie off...  Yummy!!!

I'm sorry honey!  I'd probally be putting those 8 posts to use for an 8 rope tie off spread eagle.  Any complaints from you, well... Mr. Ball Gag would be introduced to Miss Sluttly Mouth quickly.

But seriously, when did Spread Eagle Bondage sink to being on par with the dreaded Missionary Position?   Is this what bothers you?  Somebody might engage in missionary sex with you while your all tied up?

There are some apparatuses (apparati?) I like to use spread eagle on, but the bed is not one of them

I rather like spread eagle tie for a first meet. Its simple, accessible, useful and doesnt restrict the eye contact for someone so that they can see me and not be freaked out by being tied facing away from me. If this was someting you were running into where theis was ALL they wanted to do, I could see a problem. But for a first timer and a first playtime, I cant see where its a problem.
I am resisiting the urge to say "They are the Dominant, they like it, so they do it." But that is really what it boils down to. I had a pet who was 6'3, and who squirmed alot, so a spread eagel tie worked great, took tons of rope to get him completely immobilized but it was so worth it.
