But Thadius none of this addresses the issue of arrogance on the part of the search committee, what does this say about McCain's judgement.Does McCain really believe he can court the disaffected Hillary backers by selecting a social conservative simply because she wears a skirt. This is insulting to the voters on numerous levels and will IMO blow up in Mccain's face.

Die hard Dems weren't going to vote for McCain anyways.  I believe this pick is a double sided pick.  First it provides red meat for the conservative base, and second it puts a very strong woman in a position to run in 4 years.  Remember not all of Hillary's female supporters were liberals.

I think it is arrogant of folks to think this pick was based on going after liberal women,  as Palin is a hardcore conservative.  I think what really got McCain's attention and the final nod was her ability to buck the system (the way he used to), remember she didn't go after Dems, she went after Republican corruption and won.

Just my take on it,
Thadius

P.S. I think she will appeal to blue collar women in the middle of the country.

Interesting clip, Thadius. Thanks.

I guess someone has told her what the VP does all day.

I was a little perturbed at her desire to figure how to be VP in a way that benefits Alaska. I'd like to our national leaders to focus on the good of the whole nation.

Who was that dreadful interviewer?

Have any citations of her backtracking?

Edited to add: I am referring to her changing her story, as I have seen her statements a couple of weeks ago. The only thing linking her to pressuring the man is a single phone call from an aide.

Palin also acknowledged that her staff had contacted Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan about two dozen times about Wooten. Monegan himself was fired July 11 (the dismissal was "out of the blue," he told reporters) and he later said that he was pressured by Palin's staff and family to get rid of Wooten, a trooper based in Palmer, Alaska.

Does anybody know if Sarah Palin has ever travelled abroad in any other capacity than as a tourist (and has she ever travelled as a tourist, come to think of it)?

Oh shit Al you got me,the trooper didn't lose his job,he was though suspended for 5 days for an incident with a stun-gun and his 10 y/o son.Now that is troubling and maybe he should lose his job.But how does that mitigate the charge of mis-use of authority in that she didn't suceed in costing this man his job.Not sure the distinction matters to the Dept.of Public Safety Commisioner who did lose his job...or the staffer who was possibly "scapegoated" over the whole affair, and lost their job too...

How it mitigates, is if it turns out to be as trumped up as Obama's Quran-swearing photos...

I would prefer to wait for more info before getting too excited about accusations flung during a campaign...

Unless of course, they were investigating those rumors about her being a thespian when she was in college... now that would be hawt!!

I've long had the theory that the first woman President would be a Republican.

How about President Pelosi!!  If you really want to worry about our country...this nutcake from San Francisco who
was elected by around 160,000 votes...is THIRD in the line for the Oval Office.  Now that scares the hell out of me.

Think about that before you attack a principled woman like the Governor of Alaska. And, incidentally, the woman
has years more executive experience than Obama who has run nothing, has had responsibility for nothing...voted
"present over 140 times in the Illinois Senate",  has had two trips to Europe...one on spring break and one just
recently before a bunch of hyped up German socialists dancing to rock musik. And old Joe Biden has never worked
in the real world since he was 29 years old...Yea sure...he can relate to the blue collar guys spending around $180 or soround trip on Amtrak...not the NYC subway system, to say the least.  This is the NEW face Obama brings to the table..a guy with hair plugs.

The democrat party better look for another direction of attack than her "inexperience".  Gimme a break!

One of her friends said today on MSNBC that she had recently traveled to visit the troops in Iraq.

Ah well, Iraq... that's an excellent introduction to the foreign policy of the United States .

I wonder about something: why Sarah Palin, and not Condoleeza Rice? She's a woman as well, with TONS of experience. Hmmmm ...

Alaska is very important to the nation at large, part of the deal that was made to bring them into the union was that they would provide their natural resources to the lower 48.  Remember Alaska is the state of energy, both oil and natural gas.  She took the windfall that came into the state coffers from the elevated prices of oil and refunded it to the people of Alaska, and also has a $40Billion project to create a natural gas pipeline in the works.

As Gov her first thoughts should go to her state, as VP I am sure it will be focused where it should be.

I have no idea about the interviewer.  There is another clip floating around from the CNN Beck show.

Well sure, that and the fact that Alaska is by Russia...lots of foreign experience to be had by being neighbors.

I'm honestly worried for McCain. Of course Condoleeza would have been a formidable and much more natural choice. I'm flummoxed.

And she shall ever be joined at the hip with President Bush; the last thing McCain needs.

Is it wise and good judgment to choose the Vice Presidential candidate and possible President after 1 or 2 meetings?

Isn't that about the extent of a particular Senator from Illinois' experience on foreign policy?

As to why... well here is one opinion from Feb 2007.

As Governor of Alaska she regularly negotiates with Russia, Japan, and Canada over international fishing rights and abuses.  She regularly negotiates with Canada regarding oil and gas leasing and drilling.

She has negotiated with Canada regarding a 40 Billion dollar natural gas pipeline and has been instrumental in fast tracking legislation in both Alaska and Canada to allow this to happen.

So the mantra of 'no international experience' is a fallacy.

But why not Rice?! It's awful: what's wrong with Rice? Is she too competent? Is it because she has international savvy? Is it because of the rumours that she's gay? What the fuck?

Palin is so wreckless a choice, it's bordering on criminally insane. McCain was introducing her today in Ohio and had to read her name and state from a piece of paper he had in front of him. A potential vice-president he doesn't even know!
