Here are some gentle ideas:

a cheerleaders pom-pom
Long Stem Carnations (they don't last very long, but it's very amusing)
Thistles
Long Horse hair (sold for Artists)
A Chamois Cloth (like for buffing cars)

On a sidenote:  I was amazed to discover I have more than 100 specific implements in my toy box whose only purpose is to hit people with them.... [:)] My current fave are several leather Jack in Pulpits.  These things are FUN.

The nastiest: a carbon fiber fishing rod core (although that's really more caning)

The funniest: a fly swatter I once found at the $1 store... plastic, and shaped like Micky Mouse's hand...

The most unusual: a mouse pad, in the shape of a VW bug.

I have seen the equine sweat scraper mentioned on the list already, but there is a plastic one with rubberized squeegee type edges.  It makes quite an evil spanking device.  Along similar lines a large metal curry comb, also for horse grooming,  can be quite an interesting paddle. Or even that can be raked over the skin for sensation play as well.

Ooh, one I forgot that's kind of fun. Making a make shift pair of  "panties" out of bubble wrap.  Then using the tubing from a sphygmomanometer (blood pressure cuff). You start whacking, and popping the bubble wrap.  As the bubbles slowly disappear, the sting slowly increases, until the bubble wrap has been beaten off entirely.  Oh what delicious welts!

Hmm.. would the TYPE of bubblewrap have an effect? I mean larger bubbles vs smaller bubbles?

The larger ones are more fun IMHO. The smaller ones go away too fast, and don't stand up too well to the tubing, so not as teasing of a build up.

Ok, So, here's my story... Before Sweets became my Master, we were just friends... Well, we were hanging out infrom of my childhood home one day, and my father had these ugly wild flowers growing outside of his house.. I don't know what they were, but they looked kind of like Daisies... they were purple, and really tall... They came up past my hips... Well, He one time pulled one out of the ground while He, I, and a bunch of other friends were just standing around talking, just being teenagers with nothing to do. He proceded to peel all of the leaves off of it, leaveing just the flower on the stem.  He then Popped the flower off and handed it to me... As I turned around to throw it as far as I could down the street, He Snapped me on the ass with the "switch" he made.... Well, it hurt so bad that I cried for about 20 minutes, and it left a HUGE welt even through my Jeans...

I still bring it up to him... But I would never tell him that I secretly liked it... :)  Oh.. Crap.. he's on here... and Might read this... lol 

But yes, that always left an impression on me!

I use a long guitar-neck blank.  It's so light and easy to wield.  It practically does the beatin' for me.  Subster was carrying it in from the car at "local bondage club" one night and the lady at the desk commandeered it and took him in a side office to test it out.  He had to tearfully come to me and explain why it took so long.

Once She sent me into the kitchen to bring Her something to spank me with.  It was a light, fun afternoon and She wanted to see what i'd come up with.....

After surveying the kitchen and deeming everything else in there an "owwwie" item.... i returned with an oven mitt [:D]  The look on Her face... priceless.  The look on my face when She used it... surprise!
