Some turn violent in march to GOP convention

Demonstrations near the Republican National Convention site turned violent Monday, as protesters harassed some delegates, smashed windows, slashed car tires and threw bottles. Police using pepper spray arrested more than 50 people.

The trouble happened not far from the Xcel Energy Center convention site where the GOP was starting its four-day meeting. And many of those involved in the more violent activities identified themselves to reporters as anarchists. These protesters, clad in black, were operating on the streets in addition to a mostly peaceful anti-war march, wreaking havoc by damaging property and setting at least one fire. Most of the trouble was in pocket of a neighborhood near downtown, several blocks from where the convention was taking place.

What a bunch of...ah...I guess "assholes" would be a way to describe them.

Reminds of the time an Anarchist's Convention (I swear, this is true) met in San Francisco, then decided to get on the BART, got off in Berkeley, and trashed Telegraph Avenue.  Another bunch of assholes.

would creating violence while protesting for peace be an oxymoron or just a bunch of regular morons?

Like with the occupation of Iraq? Sorry: couldn't help it. Back to your regular program.

Based on the quote you yourself provided the peace protestors weren't violent. The self declared anarchists caused the trouble. So what was the point of the thread title?

The irony is, that the Iraq war was started on a lie because people who knew the pretext for war was a lie, objected in a peaceful manner. If those who knew Bush and Blair were lying to their teeth used a little violent protest, the war probably wouldn't have happened.

Certainly in Britain, Blair ignored the biggest ever (peace) demonstration in British history and went to war. If people had rioted, Britain wouldn't have gone to war and Bush would have lost his diplomatic fig leaf and going to war would have been seen for what it was, a simple act of imperial aggression. Though most of the world knows that is what it was anyway.

It's also one of the ironies of modern politics that politicians complain about violent protest but when they unleash violence that kills thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands, its not violence but fighting for civilized values.

The anarchists didn't destroy Denver, did they, thus making it obvious which side they're on. Were they true anarchists they wouldn't target the RNC during antiwar protests, they'd be causing completely random havoc wherever they happened to be.

It is pure propaganda to say anarchists are violent, if the people in question were anarchists, they wouldn't be organized.

Or perhaps they knew the Democrats wouldn't tolerate heavy handed stuff against the protestors in Denver and so they couldn't achieve the result they desire, police thuggery. OTOH they suspected they could cause a little trouble at the RNC and get a response all out of proportion to their acts which is exactly what happened this weekend.

Raids where the warrants included such dangerous material as cardboard and twine? Paramilitary troops with weapons drawn? Way to go GOP you sure are showing America how you intend to make us safe. By instituting a police state that is.

I can vouch for this. The few folks that I know who consider themselves anarchists stay as far away from "organized politics" as their bikes will carry them! Organized anarchy IS an oxymoron! Now... "ass-fissures" starts with 'a'... and indicates an ass-hole in the wrong place... maybe it was a spelling error.

So they aren't anarchists, they're Democrats.

I would agree with that.

The folks who trashed Berkeley called themselves anarchists...so there would seem to be twue anarchists and pseudo-violent-anarchists.

Chucking percussion grenades at Granny?

Jan Nye, 62, of Minneapolis was part of the march and thought it was going well until police used the percussion grenades.

Aww! She was probably all sugar too. Baked cookies for her grandkids when she's not out breaking windows I bet.

As the Connecticut delegation was getting off a bus near the Xcel Center, a group of protesters broke free from authorities and attacked the delegates.
Connecticut delegate Rob Simmons told FOX 9 that a group of protesters came toward his delegation and tried to rip the credentials off their necks and sprayed them with a toxic substance.
The unknown substance burned their eyes and stained their clothes.

One 80-year-old member of the delegation had to be treated for injuries.

Up to 200 people from a group called Funk the War noisily staged their own march. Wearing black clothes, bandanas and gas masks, some of their members smashed windows of cars and stores.

From the news reports, about 200-300 people are the ones causing the violence.  And they are not affilated with nor recognized by the groups organizing the protests.

"GOP convention protest arrests tally nearly 300"

By MARTIGA LOHN and JON KRAWCZYNSKI, Associated Press Writers
Wed Sep 3, 11:09 AM ET
ST. PAUL, Minn

"The majority of protestors are doing so peacefully, about 2,000 in the poverty march and about 10,000 in the anti-war march.

"Police estimated about 2,000 people took part in the poverty march, which lasted about three hours. It ended near the convention arena with police using tear gas and flash-bang grenades to disperse protesters they said were trying to get past security fences, said Tom Walsh, a St. Paul police spokesman.

The arrests Tuesday came a day after violence erupted following a largely peaceful anti-war march by some 10,000 people. Afterward, police blamed a splinter group of about 200 for harassing delegates, smashing windows, puncturing car tires, throwing bottles and starting at least one fire.

The RNC Welcoming Committee, a self-described anarchist group that has worked for months planning convention disruptions, claimed success in e-mails to its members and media. "The spectacle has been crashed!" read one.
That group wasn't officially connected with the organizers of either march."

Some of these violent leftists will be going away for a while:

quote:

Of the 284 people arrested, 130 faced possible felony charges, authorities said.

And I wonder why some journalists were arrested?

quote:

At least four journalists were among those detained, including Associated Press photographer Matt Rourke and Amy Goodman, host of Democracy Now!, a nationally syndicated public radio and TV news program. Goodman was intervening on behalf of two producers for her program, Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar, when she was arrested, said Mike Burke, another producer.

Phil Carruthers, director of the prosecution division of the Ramsey County Attorney's Office, said late Monday night that Rourke was being released and no charges were anticipated unless something very unusual turned up upon further investigation. Police had been holding Rourke, who was released early Tuesday, on a gross misdemeanor riot charge, said Tom Walsh, a St. Paul police spokesman.

What I'm still waiting for is to hear the apology from the cops who thought it was a good idea to raid i-Witness. i-Witness is a group of lawyers who attend demonstrations peacefully and do not participate in any part but are present to document improper police behavior and to provide immediate legal consel to those arrested. They won a big lawsuit against New York City after the 2004 RNC.

For some unfathomable reason the cops raided the home where these lawyers were staying. It is basically setting up the easiest civil lawsuit imaginable for them. Hopefully the RNC and the feds will bail the St. Paul city government out when the various civil rights lawsuits bankrupt the city.
