Just announced, the Sarah Palin scandal/concern du jour: as mayor of FrozenMooseDick, Alaska, (pop. 9000, approximately 1/4 the number of people who showed up for the DNC last week) She checked with her local librarian to find out what steps she would have to go through to get certain books banned from library shelves. Not just to keep kids from reading things that might be too "adult" for them, but rather to ban them entirely, so they would not be publicly available to ANYONE. The local librarian was appalled at the request, and has come forward with this information, even through she imagines it will eventually cost her her job.

Shades of things to come...

Sorry, no link as yet. It was just announced on the Diane Rheam Show, NPR... but don't worry, Firm, it will be everywhere by tonight's speech.

So, where does that leave Palin in the context of the First Amendment?

When book banning walks in through the door, democracy goes out through the window.

Think before you vote.

Banning books, eh? Well, she's got the catholic vote.

Like the Democrats have a long track record supporting the first amendment?

Ever hear of political correctness? You want religion banned everywhere outside a church because someone might find it offensive. And the only political speech you think should be free is of your own.

Support freedom of the press? Remember the fairness doctrine that Nancy Pelosi wants put back in place?

Liberals support the first amendment....give me a break.....

bipolarber,

First, This wins the trophy for best thread titile by a mile.
Do you think Palin would get it? I have my doubts.

Anything even remotely tending towards the thought police
sets off my alarms. People who want to control your access to
thoughts have no real faith in the power of their own in the arena of ideas.

But since they are "right" it is perfectly alright to use force to make sure
the "correct" ideas win.  Sometimes, God even demands it of them.
Sometimes, they just do it for the benefit of the "people" or the "state".

I hadn't heard about Dems wanting to ban religion outside of churches. Got a link for that?

Got a link for Pelosi and the Fairness Doctrine, while you're at it? I haven't read anything about this.

...even if everything you have typed is true, you haven't addressed the substantive point in the OP. You have a perfect right to start a thread regarding what you see as Democrats and the first amendment, but all you're doing here is attempting to deflect attention away from what is a perfectly valid act of scrutiny.
If, as the OP suggests, Sarah Palin really did try to have books banned from that library that is a scandal. Bleating on about how bad others may or may not be in no way excuses such an action from a potential US VP.

Update: media is currently putting together a list of the books she and her other "church lady" supporters wanted banned. From the sound of it, it's the usual fare: Harry Potter, Stephen King, Vonnegut, Miller, and several others that are gay positive. Basically anything that might be connected to being gay, connected to witchcraft, or that is in any way critical of religion. (Her religion, especially.) Apparently, her attempt fell flat, and she backed off fast when the rest of the town got wind of it.

"You spin me right round, Baby, right round. Like a record, Baby, right round, ground round"

Shortly after becoming mayor, former city officials and Wasilla residents said, Ms. Palin approached the town librarian about the possibility of banning some books, though she never followed through and it was unclear which books or passages were in question.
Ann Kilkenny, a Democrat who said she attended every City Council meeting in Ms. Palin’s first year in office, said Ms. Palin brought up the idea of banning some books at one meeting. “They were somehow morally or socially objectionable to her,” Ms. Kilkenny said.
The librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons, pledged to “resist all efforts at censorship,” Ms. Kilkenny recalled. Ms. Palin fired Ms. Emmons shortly after taking office but changed course after residents made a strong show of support. Ms. Emmons, who left her job and Wasilla a couple of years later, declined to comment for this article

...what's your point? Other than showing that Sarah Palin was interested in the possibility of banning books and that, after taking office, she fired a librarian who stood up to her, and that that decision was hastily reversed when it became obvious to her that it was an unpopular decision, i'm not sure what you're trying to say.......

Did you guys read page 2 of the link?
There is more bad news on her choices while Mayor of Wasilla -

"Once in office, Ms. Palin asked many of Mr. Stein’s backers to resign — something virtually unheard of in Wasilla in past elections. The public works director, city planner, museum director and others were forced out. The police chief, Irl Stambaugh, was later fired outright

Mr. Stambaugh lost a wrongful termination lawsuit against Ms. Palin. He did not respond to a request for an interview.

Ms. Palin also upended the town’s traditional ways with a surprise edict: No employee was to talk to the news media without her permission."
