Palin is a true feminist role model

A view of Sarah Palin from the other side of the pond....

quote:

During the Democratic primaries, Gloria Steinem, pioneering feminist and Hillary Clinton supporter, argued that the contest had revealed that gender was “probably the most restricting force in American life”. She illustrated her point by imagining a female version of Barack Obama and contending that no woman with such a slender biography would be considered seriously for the presidency.

It is now clear that Ms Steinem was right – although proof comes not from the treatment of the Democratic lioness Mrs Clinton but from the responses, particularly on the left, to the Republican newcomer Sarah Palin. Less than 24 hours after the triumphant close of a convention that nominated a 47-year-old first-term senator as its party’s candidate to be president of the United States, Democratic heavyweights were sputtering with horror at the idea of a 44-year-old, first-term governor as Republican vice-presidential nominee.

Oh for christs sake... trying to make it a gender issue.

DomKen -> RE: Palin is a true feminist role model (9/3/2008 1:57:31 PM)

That's written by the US editor of the FT. She lives in New York. And the FT isn't exactly a centrist publication so I view its "news" with even more skepticism than WSJ or the Washington Times.

This is hilarious, forget her experience her stance on the issues would seem to preclude anyone from labeling her a "feminist role model".Or is all it takes to be a feminist role model the wearing of a skirt.

Yet you look at the NYT as being a legit paper even though they have so far published two false stories on Palin?

Vendaval -> RE: Palin is a true feminist role model (9/3/2008 2:03:11 PM)

It is also an op-ed piece.

The Democratic ticket in 1984 was Mondale - Ferraro.  That was 24 years ago.  The Republican party is an whole generation behind in nominating a woman to be VP.

That's an extremely ignorant statement. The first woman on the Supreme Court was put on by Reagan.....and I think that was 1982. (Sandra Day O'Connor)

So dont try to tell me that the GOP is behind in women issues. People in this forum are too smart for that kind of crap.

So only women that hold liberal viewpoints are considered worthy of being strong female role models? Or is it that only women with liberal beliefs are entitled to be strong and independant?  Perhaps, it is as simple as women that have conservative viewpoints, aren't entitled to the same treatment as their liberal counterparts...

This thread is specific to VP nominations.  If you want to start another thread on women appointed to the Supreme Court by various administrations please do so.

Why is it specific to VP nominations?  Would not Sandra Day be considered a female role model as well?

Nice try V.

fierceflawless -> RE: Palin is a true feminist role model (9/3/2008 2:30:25 PM)

There is no way Palin is a feminist.

First off, she seems to expect to be lauded for keeping her Downs Syndrome baby, but you don't get to be a hero for choosing YOUR ONLY OPTION. Palin doesn't believe in abortion, therefore she can't be a martyr for not choosing to have one.

Also, between her and McCain throwing the word "choice" out left and right regarding daughter Bristol's pregnancy, it seems a tad hypocritical considering they (Palin, McCain, republicans) don't believe that anyone else should be able to have those choices (re: pregnancy/abortion).

I really feel bad for Bristol, she didn't ask to be shoved into the spotlight.

Exactly. Woman who think for themselves are considered outsiders and traitors to their gender. Feminists dont believe a free-thinking woman would ever want to be a Republican or would ever want to be pro-life. They would be branded "one of the boys" and targetted for destruction.

Ever seen a sorority? It's amazing how fast a group of women would viciously turn and destroy one of their own.

Maybe "role model" for...I don't know, the Stepford Wives, but I don't think most conservative women would espouse the "feminist" part.

Ah so the truth comes out.  She is a Stepford Wife.  Thanks for clearing it up for me.  I would suggest my slave is closer to that description, than this Gov.

Then again, what do I know about being subjective in my treatment of women, and judging them on their merits....

One man's "Stepford Wife" is another man's perfect submissive partner.
Now back to politics...

Vendaval -> RE: Palin is a true feminist role model (9/3/2008 2:44:58 PM)

Where did I say that Sandra Day O'Connor was not a female role model? I chose to stay on topic.

Thadius -> RE: Palin is a true feminist role model (9/3/2008 2:48:15 PM)

You suggested that the topic was about VP nominations, but as I clearly read the topic title it is the discussion of feminist role models.  Thus the suggestion that bringing up other female role models, in context of your positing that the Republicans is 24 years behind the times, would be on topic, and not require an additional topic to be made.

Apologies for the run on sentence, but it is how my mind flowed with the words.

Sincerely,
Snowball

Why not? One of the beautiful, the successful, wealthy and self-involved. Oops.

Blindly following direction...

Good on ya.

cyberdude611 -> RE: Palin is a true feminist role model (9/3/2008 2:53:56 PM)

You made an inaccurate statement. You said that the Republicans were a generation behind because the Democrats nominated a female VP in 1984. And I stated that it is untrue that the GOP is a generation behind because they put Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court 2 years earlier than the Democrats added a VP to their ticket.

And being a Supreme Court justice is more important than a VP nominee that lost the election. So in reality, the GOP put a woman in a higher office.

Keep in mind also the first woman elected to Congress was a Republican (Jeannette Rankin).
