quote:

The Democratic ticket in 1984 was Mondale - Ferraro. That was 24 years ago. The Republican party is an whole generation behind in nominating a woman to be VP.

A whole generation, eh?
  • Oveta Culp Hobby, first Secretary of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, Eisenhower Administration
  • Anne Armstrong, first woman Counselor to The President -- Nixon Administration
  • Carla Anderson Hills, first woman to head Dept of Housing and Urban Development, Ford Administration, and first woman U.S. Trade Representative, Bush (I) Administration
  • Elizabeth Dole, first woman to head Dept of Transportation-- Reagan Administration
  • Jeanne Kirkpatrick, first woman to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations -- Reagan Administration
  • Sandra Day O' Connor, first woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, appointed by Ronald Reagan
And for those who like statistics, here's this fun little tidbit:
quote:

A total of thirty-three women have held cabinet-level positions.  Sixteen of these women were appointed by a Democratic president; seventeen were appointed by a Republican president.

Dont forget Condoleezza Rice. First female National Security Advisor. Second female Secretary of State.

This is hilarious, forget her experience her stance on the issues would seem to preclude anyone from labeling her a "feminist role model".Or is all it takes to be a feminist role model the wearing of a skirt.

So only women that hold liberal viewpoints are considered worthy of being strong female role models? Or is it that only women with liberal beliefs are entitled to be strong and independant?  Perhaps, it is as simple as women that have conservative viewpoints, aren't entitled to the same treatment as their liberal counterparts...

Hmmm, me smells somethin here... and it taint a good thang.  "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others" ~Animal Farm
Wasn't that supposed to be"all pigs are equal, some pigs are more equal than others"...And being a social conservitive would tend to put her on the wrong side of most issues closely held by the "feminist" movement, including and especially those concerned with reproductive issues.Don't know what your smelling other than truth....

If you want to see a Stepford Wife, rewind the DNC convention to the part where the made-over Michelle Obama plays the part perfectly

Maybe "role model" for...I don't know, the Stepford Wives, but I don't think most conservative women would espouse the "feminist" part.

Fair enough Thadius, it is easy to misunderstand text only communication.  I started a separate thread on female role models here to avoid a hijack.

You suggested that the topic was about VP nominations, but as I clearly read the topic title it is the discussion of feminist role models.  Thus the suggestion that bringing up other female role models, in context of your positing that the Republicans is 24 years behind the times, would be on topic, and not require an additional topic to be made.

Apologies for the run on sentence, but it is how my mind flowed with the words.

Sincerely,
Snowball

Nonetheless, do you really think she's a feminist? Do you think she would claim the title for herself? That was the topic of the OP.

Aynne88 -> RE: Palin is a true feminist role model (9/3/2008 3:01:03 PM)

She is no feminist. Nor would she I highly doubt claim that title for herself.

Ah so the truth comes out.  She is a Stepford Wife.  Thanks for clearing it up for me.  I would suggest my slave is closer to that description, than this Gov.

Then again, what do I know about being subjective in my treatment of women, and judging them on their merits....

Why not? One of the beautiful, the successful, wealthy and self-involved. Oops.

Pssst! Sanity...Michelle Obama is black...not invited!

Okay, I withdraw the "Stepford Wives" references.

So spank me.

CL and cd,

I have already responded in post #16.

Considering that only 20% of college-age women today call themselves "feminist"......no probably not. Being a "feminist" is not a cool thing to be these days. You say to someone you are a feminist and they will automatically think you are some kind of man-hating radical. That's the stereotype they have achieved for themselves because of their far-left wing beliefs.

SophiaCorrupted -> RE: Palin is a true feminist role model (9/3/2008 3:04:25 PM)

Feminists trying to take away women's reproductive rights, hm?

She might claim to be a feminist, but she's still dumb as shit if she's gonna be overly concerned with the happenings in my vagina.

Thadius -> RE: Palin is a true feminist role model (9/3/2008 3:04:39 PM)

Ah the irony is almost too much for me to carry on.  A Gorean arguing with women, that claim to be feminists, about the rights of a particular woman to run for office.

Time for me to go back to being a chauvanist.  So who is making dinner?

CL would you care to do the math on how many Democratic Administrations appointed those 16 woman to cabinet level positions as opposed to the # of Republican Administrations it took to appoint the 17.Or do you prefer to leave it at this ?
Statistics are a funny thing are they not ?

A central tenet of feminism is advocacy of women and advocacy of gender equality.

So far as I know, Sarah Palin has never campaigned on such issues specifically, but her ability to take on a male-dominated political establishment and win certainly seems to showcase all that feminism holds dear.

Hang on, I'm a what? I said what about her rights to run for office?

Does chauvinist mean "I'll tell you what you are and what you said" in Gorean?

I'm making dinner: beef burgundy.

Sanity -> RE: Palin is a true feminist role model (9/3/2008 3:11:32 PM)

If you get to decide what "true feminists" have to believe, can I decide what "true submissives" have to believe?

Aynne88 -> RE: Palin is a true feminist role model (9/3/2008 3:11:32 PM)

Thadius that is the issue. Just because she is running for office does not make her a feminist. Cat has kittens in the oven, doesn't make 'em biscuits.    [:D]  So tell me, are there any feminists in Gor?

Oh, and Thadius, after I iron I am making baked stuffed haddock. Does that make me *not* a feminist too?

All that feminism holds dear would include oppression, stereotyping, sexual objectification, mysogyny, etc., etc. etc., as a part of gender equality and advocacy for women, don't you think?
[Edited cause I screwed up the quote box. Silly girl!]

Sanity -> RE: Palin is a true feminist role model (9/3/2008 3:20:20 PM)

Lets not get ahead of ourselves here! First we have to work out who decides what a "true feminist" is and who decides what a "true submissive" is, and then we can work on whether or not you get to decide if they can be both or not.

One thing at a time...
