Aneirin -> Snails (9/5/2008 5:54:38 AM)

Where I live, it was noted by one of the OAPs that I have an awful lot of snails around my kitchen window, like twenty six of them all positioned around my window frame. Thinking this kind of different, I checked out all the other window frames on the flats where I live, no one had snails around their window, only me. Now I checked the front window and same again, I was the only flat that had snails around my window. It can't be the light, because there are four flats facing the same direction both front and rear. Anyone any ideas why my flat seems to be a snail magnet ?

Fair enough, I do talk to them, try to avoid stepping on them and if I do crunch one, they get an apology before stamping them out. It is unfair to leave them to try and survive with a broken shell. I even let them munch the salt of my fingers, an unusual sensation, like a soft scraping, their mouth being underneath at the front.

Yes, there are loads of snails about, and slugs and they do seem to be acting strange this year, especially the slugs, behaviour I have not seen before, like two slugs curling up together and secreting a bubbly liquid between them.

They can feel you won't harm them, and that somewhere in your heart, you love them.

You're the snail whisperer.

try Raid

kittinSol -> RE: Snails (9/5/2008 6:10:01 AM)

Murderer! Look at this, two snails making love . How can you [:o].

(Besides, Raid would make them uneatable. Now, where's the garlic... [8D]?)

Yes, apparently they make love by firing a dart into the other. I have a microbiologist drinking buddy and we discuss the snails as they perambulate across the table between our pint glasses.

Aileen1968 -> RE: Snails (9/5/2008 6:32:13 AM)

You should get a whole bunch of snakes.  They would probably eat them and all of your problems would be solved...no more crunching under your shoes.  No more trails across the glass.  Think of the money you'd save on glass cleaner.

LaTigresse -> RE: Snails (9/5/2008 6:36:04 AM)

Sooooooooo, when's dinner?

Aneirin -> RE: Snails (9/5/2008 6:38:40 AM)

Yes, that's a point, I have not seen many snakes around this year or slow worms for that matter. We do have one mildly venomous snake, but that one is very shy.

Window cleaner, we don't need window cleaner, we have a lot of rain that manages pretty well, especially if you squirt cleaner at the top of the window and let the rain do the rest. Something that works for cars too.

Ha... I thought of that one too when I read this thread.

sub4hire -> RE: Snails (9/5/2008 7:47:02 AM)

Well you seem to be feeding them.  Talking to them.  Sort of like feeding a puppy..they don't go away either.  They remember where they got food and hang out looking for another handout.

Odd that you have exactly 26 snails on both windows.

kittinSol -> RE: Snails (9/5/2008 7:51:02 AM)

It's magical. Now, where's the skillet *whistle whistle whistle*?

GreedyTop -> RE: Snails (9/5/2008 7:53:50 AM)

*breaks out the butter and garlic*

DomMeinCT -> RE: Snails (9/5/2008 7:59:06 AM)

You can eat certain garden snails (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2003/05/05/urbananimal.DTL), but given your aversion to stepping on them, you might not want that.

I wonder if they're attracted to your windows due to their color, direction facing the sun, or something about the house appears to be a good place to winter.  One Fall I had a huge infestation of ladybugs all over one side of the house and was told it was due to the light color and warmth from the afternoon sun.

kittinSol -> RE: Snails (9/5/2008 8:03:22 AM)

Sooooooooo unkosher, but hey, it's only Friday [&:] (really, I think snails are revolting to eat, but that's just my opinion [X(] ).

GreedyTop -> RE: Snails (9/5/2008 8:06:02 AM)

ooh...  I love escargot..

unkosher? oh.. meat and butter together?
