I'm not sure in what context you're trying to define the word, but typically, it means something that behaves or is designed to suit an earlier time... maybe something more like how the grandparents or great-grandparents liked things or did things.

thanks a lot CallaFireStormB for the answer so far. context is , if someone tells you i am an old fashioned guy does it imply any rules, routines, rituals - especially in the bedsm context as well?
i am a bit lost here, cause even the old fashioned expression for me isn't clear!

daddysprop247 -> RE: "Old fashioned" (9/5/2008 12:30:49 PM)

Daddy and i often describe our relationship to vanilla as "old-fashioned"...it is just an expression which typically refers to something being done the "old way" or the "traditional way." our relationship can be described as old-fashioned because in many ways it is like a vanilla relationship of times past...we believe in the Male Head of household dynamic, in traditional gender roles (women subservient to men, men as authority figures to women, etc.). i do not work outside the home by my Master's choice, and also do not drive, have my own money or in any way live an independent life. i depend on him completely for everything from food to underwear to a roof over my head. again, this was common in relationships generations ago, hence the term, "old-fashioned."

edited to add...old-fashioned can also (sometimes) indicate that a person may not be heavily into kink/bdsm activities, and may be more focused on an overall lifestyle of Dominance and submission.

DomDolf -> RE: "Old fashioned" (9/5/2008 12:54:38 PM)

Many refer to themselves as old fashioned. Often this infers a proper place and position for man and woman. In the "old days" men went out and worked and women stayed home and tended to the house and children, dinner was on the table when the man got home, as an example.

It could refer to what some call the 'period lifestyle', living in the spirit of a particular period in time, Victorian, 1950's or like me 1960's...

It's that Bohemian part of me, hippyness, Woodstock, Monterey, etc.. as an example.,.

To me, this would mean a guy who was looking for a "marriage and family" scenario. He's probably also inclined to monogamy, and possibly even to things like having his wife be at home (with or without offspring), and attending to his needs rather than out working. Think Ward and June Cleaver (Leave it to Beaver), or even The Cunninghams (Happy Days).

As far as the BDSM -- I'd look at him liking things like OTK, domestic discipline, etc.

The best thing you can do, though, any time one of these kinds of questions come up, is to ask the person who made the remark. The reason for this is because definitions for some of these concepts is often slippery. "Old Fashioned" to me doesn't mean the same thing that "Old Fashioned" means to my dad... make sense? And there is always the possibility that he is Old Fashioned in the "Caesar's Rome" style -- togas, binge/purge feasts, house full of slave-girls... or "Old Fashioned" in terms of the Leather Lifestyle -- "bottom-up" mastery, where you have to earn your leathers; heavy S/M, but not so much D/s... you never know until you ask.

Mmmmmmmm, I keep a bottle of Maker's Mark in the pantry. Although it keeps getting shoved further and further into the corner as the jars of applesauce pile up.

If it gets lonely I'll keep it company ;)

I think it's okay. There's always lots of wine in there. Perhaps a bottle of rum, and always some good gin and wwwwodka. And now, lots and lots of jars of applesauce.

Sheesh, all this Suzy homemaker stuff, people are going to think I am old fashioned!!

DomDolf -> RE: "Old fashioned" (9/5/2008 2:37:05 PM)

Damn those bottles of wine always get the fun. I love homemade applesauce. Never too much. [image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m9.gif[/image]

littlewonder -> RE: "Old fashioned" (9/5/2008 2:52:36 PM)

Usually when someone says they are "old fashioned" it means they are traditional. They believe in monogamy, no sex till marriage, the man is the head of the household, the woman stays home to cook,,clean, raise the children, etc...think "Leave it to Beaver" and there you have "old fashioned".

windchymes -> RE: "Old fashioned" (9/5/2008 3:26:31 PM)

He might mean that he likes to open doors for the lady, be the one to initiate phone calls and dates, etc.  Be the persuer in a relationship.  You might want to remind him that "old-fashioned" guys didn't expect sex from a girl until marriage [;)]

Hello magicone. ''Old fashioned'' can only be understood in context. For example, I may be old fashioned in my taste for clothes, food, cars etc. In relationships, I am old fashioned in the sense that I believe in some time to get to know someone, be intimate, actually find out about compatible ''faults'', build trust and then actually start a serious marital relationship.

In today's much faster approach to ''living together'', after dating more or less exclusively it does not surprise much when someone says he/she is moving in with someone after 6 months. In that context, I have been called ''old fashioned'' because my wife and I took two years to get married. We were formally engaged for one. In older times, 2 years was considered minimal, acceptable adequate time. Today? It's called old fashioned and overly cautious as in ''time is short, why wait''?

One must remember that you can be old fashioned in one context and absolutely cutting edge buzz in another. Hope you get the ''hint''. RL

Dont forget "old fashioned" being a reference to the "old guard" aka Leathers and protocol and such like
