Abraham Lincoln
Franklin Roosevelt

Both overcame adversity to be strong leaders in times of crisis.

dcnovice -> RE: Male role models and heroes (9/5/2008 12:50:34 PM)

Also John Adams. Flawed though he was, he did a great thing that we Americans tend to take for granted.

And that is that he lost an election and surrendered power. Rare thing, that.

Mike Monsoor, Medal of Honor recipient, son, brother, uncle, warrior.

http://www.navyseals.com/michael-monsoor
quote:

“A couple of hours later, an insurgency fighter closed on the overwatch position and threw a fragment grenade into the overwatch position which hit Monsoor in the chest before falling in front of him. Monsoor yelled, “Grenade!” and dropped on top of the grenade prior to it exploding. Monsoor’s body shielded the others from the brunt of the fragmentation blast and two other SEALs were only wounded by the remaining blast.”

“One of the key aspects of this incident was the way the overwatch position was structured. There was only one access point for entry or exit and Monsoor was the only one who could have saved himself from harm. Instead, knowing what the outcome would be, he fell on the grenade to save the others from harm. Monsoor and the two injured were evacuated to the combat outpost battalion aid station where Monsoor died approximately 30 minutes after the incident from injuries sustained by the grenade blast.”

quote:

During Mike Monsoor's funeral in San Diego, as his coffin was being moved from the hearse to the grave site at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery, SEALs were lined up on both sides of the pallbearers route forming a column of two's, with the coffin moving up the center. As Mike's coffin passed, each SEAL, having removed his gold Trident from his uniform, slapped it down embedding the Trident in the wooden coffin. The slaps were audible from across the cemetery; by the time the coffin arrived grave side, it looked as though it had a gold inlay from all the Tridents pinned to it. This was a fitting send-off for a warrior hero.

In his words "No Regrets" "I'm with my boys and that's as good as it gets!"

Godspeed.

Edited to fix quote tags.

~FR~

My Grandfather who was a veteran of two wars, 1 conflict, Father of 7, Grandfather of 26, one of the strongest and most dominant Men I know, yet had a huge heart and taught me that those that have power over others have a responsibility to their well being.

LaTigresse -> RE: Male role models and heroes (9/5/2008 1:21:18 PM)

Right off the top of my head.....I can only think of two. They are not role models persay, but they are heroes to me. I have tremendous respect and admiration for things they have overcome in life, for the inner person in them that I know. I've met and known very very few men in my life that I could respect, these two I do.

One shares the farm with me, and the other I raised. They are both amazing men.

meatcleaver -> RE: Male role models and heroes (9/5/2008 1:26:28 PM)

Henry II for making the judiciary independent of the executive, he traded power for justice. One of the most important steps in the long evolution towards a just state, something we have still to achieve.

bipolarber -> RE: Male role models and heroes (9/5/2008 1:27:47 PM)

The men in my family, of course... and also:

"Tank man" from the Tietomien Square incident. Talk about guts! I don't care what BS Celtic Lord spouts about non-citizens being insignificant.... that man is an American, no matter what citizenry his paperwork says!

Stephen Hawking.
Chris Reeve

Drat, I forget his name at the moment, but he's a multi-billionaire (via internet innovation) and is the inventor of the Segway...  Anyway, he's putting most of his fortune into developing technology that will improve conditions in the third world, providing clean water, sanitation, electrical power, and contraception.

Issac Asimov

Harlan Ellison

Bengamin Franklin, and most of the Founding Fathers. (Still not sure about Adams)

Tesla, although his later life became tragic.

H.G. Wells

Kurt Vonnegut

Aneirin -> RE: Male role models and heroes (9/5/2008 1:31:49 PM)

The guy in the mirror, meaning I follow my own path.

But of other people, I admire Nichola Tesla for his humanitarian efforts to ease the living of all mankind for FREE. of course he was thwarted by businessmen and those that equated power to money and the more money to greater power.

NeedToUseYou -> RE: Male role models and heroes (9/5/2008 1:35:34 PM)

Andrew Jackson. He killed the central bank of his time. What greater act of good could ever be achieved?

Makes the current lot of pussy politicians, well look like pussies.

I don't know if he is my Hero but anyone that takes on the powerful, when they could just cash in is good.

SilverMark -> RE: Male role models and heroes (9/5/2008 2:09:11 PM)

I had an uncle, quiet man, career military and always pleasant to be around. My Grandmother told Me one day did you know Bill is the most decorated soldier ever from our state....at the time I was all of 12 or 13 and said no and left it at that.I retained the fact but, he never liked talking much about his career although stayed in the military until I was grown and married etc. He finally retired and within a couple of years had a quite devastating stroke. Watched him struggle to speak, revert to some "child like" behaviors, try to re learn to walk and he never got much better. About 8 years ago I got a call from My Father and he told Me Bill was to be inducted into the Airborne Ranger Hall of Fame at Ft. Benning in Columbus,Ga., which is a couple of hours South of My home in Atlanta and asked if I would like to go and of course I wanted to do so. I was never really involved with anything military, off to college after high school, too young for Viet Nam too old for the new draft registration etc. I was amazed at the proceedings, standing there they talked of the history of the Rangers, from the revolution through present day and then one by one they called the inductees forward and told the tales of their heroism. Finally they got to My uncle....sitting in his wheel chair, his beret on...My cousin a Chief Warrant Officer/helicopter pilot, former Ranger and part of the mountain brigade standing formally next to him and finally the I hear what this unassuming man had done as his "job" and for that job fought in the Korean War and the Vietnam War, and he was a trainer for operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield. He earned two Silver Stars and two Purple Hearts 2 Bronze Stars One,
In Vietnam, his six-man team was ambushed by a company-size unit -- more than 60 men. During fierce fighting, the Rangers killed or wounded 34 enemy soldiers. Butler was wounded and earned his second Purple Heart. When he returned in 1969 from Vietnam, he was recognized as Indiana's "Most Decorated Soldier."He took his final parachute jump at age 59 over Camp Atterbury near Indianapolis. When he retired,he was inducted into the Indiana Hall of Heroes, and was recognized by then-Gov. Evan Bayh as a Sagamore of the Wabash. In 2000,he was inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame at Fort BenningHe had hoped to attend the Aug. 29 dedication of Camp Butler, the National Guard Warrior Training Center on 40 acres at Fort Benning, Ga.but died 2 weeks prior.Never had to look to far for a Role Model.....and he always considered himself lucky to have the job!

Earl Warren for having the capacity to recognize that the Japanese internment and his hand in it was unjust and apologized. He knew first hand what it was like to need protection from major corporation. I think that these events would shape his views in remarkable ways.
Hugo Black. He was fantastic. This is one of my favorites though
He wrote the dissenting opinion in
Betts v Brady, 1942 .
Twenty one years later he would have his day and make it so in
Gideon v Wainwright, 1963

My father and my owner.

John McCain, though I don't share his political views, I feel his deep love for our country, & has tried to devote his life to serving it.

My grandfather, Harold Valentine, who died of cancer when I was 3. I still remember him, & our last visit together.  He was the best grandfather any child could have had.

My other grandfather, Hilding Nelson, who loved gardening.  He was saving seeds long before it became fashionable & was gifted with talents from his hands.

Heh....Next to my father, Andrew Jackson is also my first choice. And the ''pussy'' comment is right on the money. They don't make men like him anymore. The current lot of politicians are a complete embarrassment to this country.

I'd pick John Gotti and Albert Anastasia as roll models when compared to contemporary politicians.

But just to name a few others :

General George S. Patton

Richard Melon Scaife

Aristotle

General Smedley D. Butler

Webster Tarpley

Vladimir Putin

Ike

Michael Irvin

General Lewis Chesty Puller

Lawrence Taylor

Ron Paul

Evander Holyfield

All my homies from Cali.

And as far as CM is concerned, the two guys listed on the ''friends'' category of my profile would never have to pull a dollar out of their pockets if CM ever had a party with ''no-host'' cocktails. They're taken care of....

Winston Churchill during the second world war

Sir Edmund Hillary- for his guts and determination.

My grandfather - for putting up with my grandmother - a woman who refused to go to my dads wedding.

My Sir - for putting up with me, and loving me, and being so comfortable in his own skin.
