I never liked soap operas and this to me is becoming one, a blow by blow account of everything and the analysis beyond. A thought has just occurred, this is akin to a sports commentator commenting on a sports game, has anyone ever actually listened to the drivel they spout when a game is going on. I can deal with facts, but not the nit picking and analysis of speeches made after they have occurred.

But whoever gets into power, and the changes they promise, remember words are just words until action is taken and once a person is in power, it is too late. Changes we all need, but I wonder how watered down those promises will be once the golden seat is attained. The president might in theory be the most powerful person in America, but is he really, is he so brave as to cause change and upset the status quo.

Your last sentence tells it all.  Being a President with strong core beliefs and the passion and strength to make the tough decisions necessary to "upset the status quo" is
EXACTLY what seperates the great ones from the pedestrian.  Historically, America
has been able to find those leaders when the need was great.  This election calls
once more for this type of strength in our leader.  That is the call to conscience we
all face when we close the curtain and vote.  You are right, however, we don't know for sure until years later...and in some cases like Harry Truman, for example, his more than capable ability as President was not recognized for thirty years.

Well I certainly was not thinking of you when I alluded to those who are handicapped. I guess its just hard for me to not post for a while, come back, and see so many threads where its completely obvious that people's minds are hopelessly locked-up in this democrat/republican false paradigm.

The masses simply cannot transcend the two false parties. That and the fever pitch minutiae are what's boring to me. Political discourse itself  - Is not one bit boring...

Hey Ranger,

Good to see you posting again.  [:D]  I have to take breaks from the over-load on politics every so often.  Being informed and being involved as a citizen is important to me and I have voted in every major election since becoming eligible at age 18.

I am not bored, so much as I am completely disgusted by much of it.

As much passion as I have for political causes, I don't enjoy seeing personal attacks take the place of issues, as it so often reverts to a mud-slinging contest.

Could be just my weird take on it (wouldn't be the first time)....

No, I don't think it's your weird take. I completely agree. Although I'm not an American so I won't be able to vote. But I live here in the USA, so this election may have an impact on my life. I am just sickened by all the sniping going on. What happened to discussing the issues? What happened to giving concrete examples of what each candidate plans to do if elected? Why can't each say "I'm the best candidate because...." instead of "he's the worst candidate because..."

count me in on the 'disgusted' side...

(ferrets on cocaine fighting.. *snort* What a visual!!)

Like Greedy I'm hanging in the disgusted camp. I don't know what's worse, the fact that the lineup of candidates leaves a lot to be desired or the fact that there are so many experts on the internet that apparently missed their calling to be in politics. I'm going to stick with my take on this Presidential election, more votes will be cast to keep someone out, than to put anyone in. Actually the ferrets would at least be entertaining and not quite as predictable...lol.

caitlyn -> RE: Are there any Americans........ (9/6/2008 5:12:26 AM)

General ...

If you skip the coverage and watch/read only the content from the actual candidates, you tend to be not as bored and less disgusted.

Raechard -> RE: Are there any Americans........ (9/6/2008 5:45:08 AM)

In answer to the op.

there used to be these mythical creatures known as American's but they all died out, some believe due to over ultra conservatism leading to lack of procreation.[8|]

And that was the end of that saga [8|]

I suspect that a heck of a lot of folks feel just the way you do about it.  I know that I do.  I think that the next two months are going to be particularly ugly.  It's not so much the campaigns themselves as their supporters.  The crap they come up with is amazing, and it spreads like wildfire.  The campaigns themselves will be focussing not so much on defining themselves as defining their opponents.  The Republicans have been doing that successfully for quite a while, and this time around the Democrats are doing it pretty well, too.  That's a really successful tactic, although it generally ends up with a lot of folks voting from fear or anger rather than voting for someone they feel good about, and a lot of folks not voting at all.

........ bored of the political circus yet ?

Yes, but I don’t blame the clowns for performing, as much as I do the audience that continues to watch.

i wouldn't say i'm bored, but i've always been terrified of clowns and there are 4 of them in this particular circus.

bipolarber -> RE: Are there any Americans........ (9/6/2008 6:28:20 AM)

With me, the only part that is starting to bore me is the endless talking head channels that will deconstruct, examine and pull apart every detail of a candidate's day. Literally, I was watching one of the channels, (I honsetly can't tell any of them apart anymore... maybe CNN) and the anchors there were discussing what McCain had for lunch while giving a speech in some small town, and were wondering what his selection of entree and sides dishes meant in terms of his electin stratgem.

It's times like that, that you find yourself curled up in a fetal ball on your couch, and your eyes glazed over....

There's no problem when SOMETHING IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING... but this eternal self examination of America's political belly button lint is nothing short of soul crushing.

I'm tired/bored of the whole false left/ right paradigm, and all the goobers who've been sucked up into it.  The democrats, no the republicans, no the democrats, no I like the republicans....yada yada yada.....

Really, the whole thing remind me of college football (American football) fanatics. Go team go! I think we're going to go all the way this year with X as our candidate/starting quarterback! The other team are a bunch of losers, they don't stand a chance!

Honestly, once the Red/Blue paradigm came into play, I lost hope. If you have to simplify a situation as complex as our political structure to the point where a toddler can literally understand it, you're gonna lose all the important shit in the translation. It's all stereotypes and anecdotes and media, and above all, the goddamned cult of personality.

And Obama started campaigning for office, what, half-past 2006? I understand that they needed a long warm-up period to get let some of the hubbub disspate (I still have to think for a minute to remember if it's Barack Obama or Obama Barack), but talk about over-exposure.

It doesn't matter if tweedle-dee or tweedle-dum wins. There will be no revolutionary change for the better. There will only be more incremental changes for the worse. That's what we're offered, and that's what we'll get.

not at all, with Palin it is actually getting much better!

I quite agree.

Yeah, we Democrats have been watching a fight to the death between Obama and Hillary.  No matter what you think about him, Obama's ensured that the race has been anything but boring.

McCain took the race early and has the charisma of an Alka-Seltzer.  The entire GOP ticket had been on snooze control until Palin entered.

An ex beauty queen married to a part Indian who competed in sledding contests?  A hockey mom who kills and eats her own moose?  A far right Christian conservative with a pregnant unmarried teen daughter?  Like someone said, you can't make this stuff up.

She makes Obama's life story look boring.

Sad thing is, so many are willing to accept it with a "Thank you!"... "May I please have another?"

Wait, where have I heard that before? [8|]

kdsub -> RE: Are there any Americans........ (9/6/2008 7:00:01 AM)

Actually this is one of the better campaigns we have had of late... Both candidates desire to keep the debate on the issues. They have tried to control the third party nut cases that Rove and Bush inspired.

I can say this is the first election in years where I could live with either candidate. I think they are both men of integrity...trying to keep that integrity and get elected.

Well, here's two cents for ya. What reallllly disgusts me is the political correctness
and overt acceptance some feel they own by throwing out the term "retarded"
with total disregard to how it will affect a segment of the population.

As guardian and caregiver to my younger developmentally disabled brother,
(retarded being the more recognizable term) let me just say, get a clue.

Oh yeah, I know, "but, but, but, we don't mean it thaaaaat way".

Try walking into a room and shouting "nigger", and see if you get two seconds
to explain yourself.

As I've said all my life in regard to my brother, he's retarded, not stupid.

Can't say the same for the insensitive and apparently accepted misuse of the term.

Now, back to making fun of the candidates and those who make fun of them.

Why? Because it's fun. And that makes the flow of this conversation funny because
I see some people here who I've always noticed adored having fun.

Politics, go figure.
