Microsoft Works to Perfect Windows Vista

quote:

An advertising blitz intended to help Microsoft polish the tarnished brand of its Windows Vista operating system began this week...

But the advertising, which will cost hundreds of millions of dollars over several years, is really just “air cover,” according to Bill Veghte, the Microsoft executive who is responsible for sustaining Windows...

To keep that business humming, Microsoft needs to have consumers and corporations upgrade to new versions of Windows — something that has not been so easy with Vista.

“What we’re seeing with Vista is that for the first time some significant portion of consumers and business customers have decided it’s not worth upgrading,” said David B. Yoffie, a professor at the Harvard Business School. “If they don’t, the end of the franchise is at hand.”...

To set more detailed plans, Mr. Veghte plucked 10 other managers from across the company, and the group set up offices away from headquarters in Redmond, Wash., in an office building in nearby Bellevue, which they called “the Bunker.”...

It appears that Microsoft believes it has solved the biggest problems with Vista and that they feel consumers just need educating.

Funny, but I somehow think they are the ones out of touch. [;)]

I don't usually upgrade windows from one version to another. Computers go out of date so fast and the next computer I buy will have the next version of windows, I continue on that basis. Installing a new version of windows on an old PC usually means the old PC can't cope with the new version of windows.

Owner59 -> RE: It seems we're just unenlightened about Vista... (9/6/2008 7:19:02 AM)

Vista works just as good as XP(so far).

Slightly different feel and look, but essentially the same.

The bad hype was bumming me out when I needed a new PC.

But you can`t get new computers w/ XP installed in them. What`s left on the shelf, is it.The updates will end at a time certain,so I hear.

I survived Vista.

bipolarber -> RE: It seems we're just unenlightened about Vista... (9/6/2008 7:57:33 AM)

Yeah, I found that ad to be pretty insluting too. They would have done much better to create a message where they said, "Look, we screwed up with the early release, but things are fixed now." Instead, they opted for implying: "People who hate Vista are stupid."

Doesn't matter. I still run ME, on a very old machine, but the next time I buy a computer... I'm going back to Mac.

John Hodgeman can kiss my ass!

FR:

I detest Vista, primarily because of how it reports in all the time (and they try to hide it: why does Solitaire want to use the Internet?), how it requires massive amounts of more memory and hardware in order to even try to approach performance standards of other OSes, and how it's been designed to control what and how  you use your computer.

As Treasure knows, I'm moving off of Vista.  I've bought several laptops that have it, but until I had to upgrade my personal laptop, I just bitched and complained.

Since I had to buy a Vista laptop, I decided to take action, and have switched it completely over to Ubuntu Linux.  It's been somewhat of a pain to fully configure it just perfectly, and get all the programs (including several Windows based programs) that I either wish to continue to use, or must continue to use, but I've solved all of the issues, and rarely boot back into Vista.

My machine went from "click and wait" to a screamer,

I'll continue to use some earlier version of Windows (I particularly still like W2K and have some legal copies that I had earlier retired), but now that I've invested the time and energy to understand how Linux works, MS has lost me forever.

Firm

PS.  Another major bitch I have with Vista is the file transfer time.  I have a lot of large files (Gigabyte sized).  When I use a Vista machine to transfer one over my network, Vista requires that it takes HOURS to move the file.  The same file with a Ubuntu Linux machine can transfer over in less than 5 minutes.  Hours versus minutes, who the hell is MS kidding?

Fuck em.

Xp does report as well but not to the extent that Vista does. It takes a lot of resources if your going to run a program and snitch on the user at the same time.[:D]

I agree with your last two words, as well, completely.

Aneirin -> RE: It seems we're just unenlightened about Vista... (9/6/2008 9:32:04 AM)

Oooo, another vista bashing thread, I just have to join in. I hate vista, I have it on this pc I am using, which incidently is my first modern computer after my old desktop which was just a collection of scrounged discarded parts running Win 98 SE. I thought getting a modern computer will make my pc usage that more enjoyable and hassle free after the problems I had with my old machine, constantly fixing those problems, but they always got fixed.

This thing, and it's daily reminders for new updates is getting on my nerves, it wants me to install SP1, but the last time I tried to install that, it messed the pc up, it took ages of searching the net for a cure to the problem, with the advice, only accept updates from HP, not microshaft. The help pages of Microshit were totally useless and I even thought arrogant.

Vista is so slow, it takes over a minute to boot up and shuttting down, sometimes two minutes of more. Also, maybe I am a bit concerned, but I do feel I am being spied on through this machine after reading about NSA having an input into the security software.

Then, the other bugbear, is none of my peripherals work with Vista and it was only this morning that I was surprised that  an old  XS drive image store actually worked with it, it had'nt, that would be the last straw. I am already searching for a legal copy of XP Pro.

I know, I should have bought a MAC, everyone I have talked to has said the same, microshaft has lost the plot. All it needs now is MAC to drop it's prices so those of us who can only afford entry level machines have the chance to switch over to pastures new.

Definately MAC next !!!

SilverMark -> RE: It seems we're just unenlightened about Vista... (9/6/2008 9:34:02 AM)

Had to change all of My pc's for My business to Vista...but, if you aren't a computer genius what can you do if it is required by your software company's system?....I am learning it like I did XP which I didn't like at first either...

Aneirin -> RE: It seems we're just unenlightened about Vista... (9/6/2008 9:43:40 AM)

Does this say something, my college is replacing all it's microsoft machines with Macs, as they get too old to be worth repairing, speaking to the techy there, no way will they go to vista, the decision has been made to spend more cash to get better machines with less problems.

I used a Mac for the first time this last wednesday, and wow, it was a beautiful machine to use, I am well impressed.

KatyLied -> RE: It seems we're just unenlightened about Vista... (9/6/2008 9:47:29 AM)

Most likely we will be upgrading our office in the next 6 months, 2 new computers.  I fear Vista!

CallaFirestormBW -> RE: It seems we're just unenlightened about Vista... (9/6/2008 10:09:35 AM)

Actually, Vista runs really, really, really well..... on a Mac!

The only problem is to get used to vista. Once you've gotten used to it you eventually start preferring it really, it's mostly very neat! ..at least it works perfectly for me :)

Raechard -> RE: It seems we're just unenlightened about Vista... (9/6/2008 10:31:30 AM)

The mind boggles as to why some people post this stuff on youtube.

aftrshock -> RE: It seems we're just unenlightened about Vista... (9/6/2008 10:34:28 AM)

Being a techie and working in the service industry, I see lots of problems associated with Vista.

Honestly, the main issue is that the system requirements for all of the visual niceties are very high; if you don't have a dual-core processor, 2 gigs of RAM, a dedicated video card, and a higher-performance 7200rpm drive with an 8mb cache buffer or above, Vista's going to hose your machine.

Celeron processor? Forget it. 512 on ram? Forget it. Integrated video? Forget it.

Vista's resource-hungry, and the 'security' feature that asks you 3 times for every action whether you actually want to do it or not is incredibly annoying; Linux actually started this ages ago, but it stores your password for 10 minutes. It's a security feature called 'sudo', meaning superuser do.

Now, Microsoft is much like a conman; they've already in the works a newer release, called Microsoft 7. If things look the same way as Microsoft's past, Vista is much like ME; 98 was a solid release (sort of), SE better; like XP SP2. Then ME came out, and destroyed everything, and a short while later, we were graced with XP, though we hated it at first.

Looks as though Microsoft is making everybody up their hardware and get higher-end systems for this poorly created OS, meanwhile they're addressing the gripes people had and are fixing, or improving on (making worse) them for the newest OS release.

As far as OS and niceties and ease-of-use, I applaud Apple's creation OS X. Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of the prior releases; the only thing I like about them is that they used FreeBSD as a basis. However, Leopard truly is the world's most advanced operating system. It makes your computer easier to use, more functional, more visual, and all over nicer and better.

Easiest case-in-point: backups.

I have at least 20 customers, per week, who bring their computers in to me because they have failing harddrives. Depending on how failed they are, I can typically retrieve all of their datas without incident. However, on very, very bad cases, the data is corrupted, or lost. How many of these people had a backup? Almost none. Out of those who had a backup, how many of them know how to use it or restore files? Almost none.

Got a mac? got an external harddrive? Plug it in. Time Machine (in Leopard) will say, hey, you want to use this for time machine? You say yes, it makes a backup. Lost something? click time machine, search in the spotlight for whatever you're missing, and click restore. done.

Harddrive fried? Whole computer died? that external drive contains an exact copy of everything; all your files, settings, applications, you name it. In a Windows machine, if your machine fails, you'll have to reinstall windows, reinstall all your programs, etc, etc. Also, if you want to put in a new OS, you'll have to do the same, and if your motherboard fails or similar, you might be able to 'repair' your installation on a new box, but typically, you'll have to reinstall. Not so with el mac; just plug in your backup drive, and whatever machine is just as yours was.

If Microsux could take a few pages from the Leopard book, they would spend the money Apple does to find out how people actually -use- their computers, rather than trying to squeeze the most from every end-user.

I need a hobby.

i loved those old computers cause you could use them as a punching/kicking bag and they would still work like new.

DomDolf -> RE: It seems we're just unenlightened about Vista... (9/6/2008 11:18:06 AM)

I would like to start my comments by stating that I am a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer. I also own a technical services and consulting company.

Vista may be fine for the occasional home user. It is not fine for any business that relies on their PCs performance. This performance is a key factor in employee satisfaction. If you want to give employees something legitimate to complain about switch to Vista. XP is still available for New PCs but they must be special ordered. Call your favorite manufacturer and request someone with their business sales office to get assistance. Switching to Mac or Linux is not feasible for the large majority of the customers I deal with. Mainly because of the support they have available to them and the legacy software that they cannot or will not change. Change creates dissatisfaction in employees too and is usually cost prohibitive in larger offices.

How the technology professionals, such as myself, are looking at Microsoft is not good. Many of us see this as a betrayal of sorts because we have dedicated our resources and aligned ourselves with Microsoft and they are not making our jobs any easier. If any company can come in and offer full compatibility with ALL products designed for Microsoft then there will likely be a mass exodus from PC to that product. Linux is not organized enough. There is too much confusion concerning releases and until there is a business minded effort to organize and compete with Microsoft they will pretty much stay where they are. I am not aware of any efforts that are close enough to this requirement yet. Mac is too expensive and too niche oriented. Understandably they have found a group of people to latch on to and meet their needs. Most of them are media oriented and not as concerned with the bigger picture of how to make them work with core business products that exist today. Right now it is difficult to get the management support required to transitionally bolt together a solution to the problems with any alternative to Microsoft.

Many of us technology professionals would like to see a Unix or Linux based solution to come forward with a stable business model. Open source, like Linux, is all but anti-business oriented. There are some releases, like Ubuntu, that I feel could, with the right business model, be competitive. Until they have the support of technology professionals they will be fighting a brick wall. Our support requires, compatibility, stability, ease of maintenance, scalability, user friendly and cost effective. Management is concerned with most of these factors as well.

In reply to the advertisement, I saw it and I feel they just bitch slapped all of us professionals. They lost all respect from many of us with this approach I'm sure. It is insulting to many, but to the professionals that know better this was unforgivable. They did similar with other releases. They started marketing and then could not work out all the issues. They have over-estimated the tolerance level of their customers and definitely those that are paid to make recommendations.

Raechard -> RE: It seems we're just unenlightened about Vista... (9/6/2008 11:25:16 AM)

I gave up on Linux when installing a wireless adapter required me to compile some shit or other. The fact is people choose windows because it's easy, it uses up all these resources just on the off chance you'll install something that requires them. It tries to do everything at the same time, no thinking required by the user.
