....well, the private sector is an excellent source of revenue for applied research. Which makes sense, pay some people to find something you can use commercially.
All well and good.

Pure research is a bit of a problem though. There are no guaranteed spin offs, and it may not be possible to predict where those spin offs may occur. Go look at a non-stick pan, that tech came about partly as a result of NASA's heat shield tech.
Sometimes pure research finds bugger all, and all that happens is a bunch of brainiacs get a bigger rep with other brainiacs. Sometimes you get radar, or x-rays or nylon. For me, pure research, as opposed to applied, ought to be funded by the state......findings, if any, then get handed out to industry......and just occasionally one of those inefficient research programs finds something that changes the world.

Yale, Colombia, all the big uni's are way up in that neighborhood and they're still sucking up Taxpayer dollars!
When does it end?
And when are they going to start spending their own money?

I am confident, tho' not certain,  that temperatures high enough such that fusion could take place were never reached. I am speaking of the late 50's
I expect that those devices that you describe work for fractions of a mille second and no more.
Dont forget Zeta was projected as the solution to the world energy probs.
You admit that that no net +ve energy device has ever been produced.
ergo ZETA failed.

Your argument that technology cannot move forward without science is quite wrong IMO
Cathedrals, musical instruments,steam engines especially railway engines, pyramids, ploughing machines, telescopes machine tools lathes etc and especially electro magnetic machines were all built without major scientific input.
Scientists predicted that radio transmission would be quite limited until the first tranatlantic broadcast was made.

It is true that science improved many devices but empiricism led the way. I believe tho' this kind of science is better described as creative technology.
Up until say 1920/1940 science/technology walked together at the leading edge of things.

Today's leading edge science is so far removed from anything of practical use that it might be better described as tinkering with philosophy.
As such it will waste lots and produce little.

Status: offline 		Okay, well, it was fired up and I'm still alive, I think.  Good enough.  I don't see what the huge deal is.  Think about it.  IF it creates a black hole... IF!!!!  Just on the insanely outside chance (because god knows that these scientists have no idea what they're doing and haven't been working on this thing for ages... no, they just grabbed a bunch of everyday joes off the street last week and said, let's build the LHC guys!), But just for all of the chicken little, sky is falling people out there...  IF that happens, you know what will happen?  We may hear an odd 'thump', wake up and say 'Hey hon?  What was that?', and then NOTHING.  It's over.  We're gone, everything we know is gone.  Earth?  gone!  No one will care, because there will BE no one.

I know, cheery thought, no?  But, this is science.  They once thought that man would sail off the edge of the world.  They once thought if we went onto a mountain, the gods and beasts there would eat us.  They once thought that the evil men from mars would come down and zap us with their ray guns.  They used to think that thunder and lightning were gods wrath being taken out on something in the sky.  Guess what.  All of those chicken little, glorified sheep that had the audacity to call themselves people were wrong.  Science and exploration proved otherwise.  We look back at the people who said "the earth is flat" now, and we laugh.  Just as, in a few hundred years, they'll look back and laugh at the people that are so terrified of the LHC.

For one, I can't wait to see what happens.  It has potential to revolutionize so many things.  Travel, shipping, energy/electricity/power supply,  heating, medicine, and more.  Now, I for one choose to investigate and study, to think about moving forward and discovering more and more.  Not to run back into my cave, scratch pictures onto the walls, and poke at the evil fire with a long stick before running away from the fearsome discovery and grunting, without thinking of the potential.

Oh hell - I'll just piss all over everything! :D

The LHC isn't exactly "working" just yet.  All they've really done was the equivalent of starting the engine in your car after you took delivery from the dealer.  Sure, the engine is running and there aren't any idiot lights on the dashboard, but they haven't even driven it around the block yet.  To continue the analogy, they're still setting the buttons on the radio and adjusting the seat & mirrors.  The 1st real test drive is set for next month.  And ya know what? If they just happen to make a black hole that swallows the Earth, we'll probably never know it happened.    In which case, see ya on the other side!

The announcement and celebration yesterday was mostly for show.  They needed to have a date when they could get the press and on-lookers in - and out - so they would have relative peace when the real work begins sometime next month.  I say More power to 'em!

BTW: Great show on time last night on Science Channel.

Anyway, just my 12-cents* worth.

On March 11 of this year, the Earth got hit square on with one of the single most destructive forces in the known universe. A Gamma Ray Burst. This burst, luckily for us, was on the other side of the universe. Had it been within a few thousand light years, the Earth would have been fried in seconds. If you happened to be outside when this flash took place, you would have noticed what looked like violet lightining. That was just the visible light bleed over of the gamma rays.

One of these, much closer to us, could happen at any time. For all we know, some star in the neighborhood has already gone "poof"  and we're just marking time until the wave front hits us.

For awhile I thought it was cool…I went around looking under the skirts of all the good looking ladies… took all the money I found in Thrasher’s and Archer’s wallets… gave kittinSol a big kiss…stuffed a rag in celticloard’s mouth…. but that fun became boring real quick. In fact I was afraid and alone so I prayed to God.

What a surprise when he said Hi Butch… God I said is that really you…Yes my son I live here and its nice to have company. God I can’t believe it’s you… I can prove it to you my son…I’ll grant you a wish.

Oh my God… I can’t think…Ok Ok…I wish all men could live in peace and harmony. I said I would grant you a wish my son…but not necessarily the one you want…If I did that I would be bored to death here in eternity so try another. OK…ahhhh let Domiguy come back to CM…. I’m sorry my son he has gone to a better place….alt.com…Oh…ok.

How about all supporters of McCain and Palin go straight to hell… Not a wish my son… they are already on the list… Damn this is hard…Watch your mouth Bitch…yes master I mean God.

OK I give up …for my one and only wish will you just restart the world… and add a few inches… you know.

Well with a wave of his hand and the heavenly host singing Ina-Godda-Da-vida I found myself back in front of my computer.

In anticipation of my last wish I pulled open my waste band to see my new endowment…only to find two more inches on my waste line and I couldn’t see a damn thing over it.
