On walking around my town yesterday, I for whatever reason started to notice what people wear, not the style they wear, but the colour, I noticed the most dominant colour was black and there began to wonder why, why is it people like to wear black. Now I wear black, most of the time, I ask myself why I wear black and though I can think of some reasons, they are not the over riding reason, I am just comfortable in black, but why ?

Has anyone else noticed what the dominant colour is amongst the people they live and work with, is it black, or is it a different colour ?

Those here, what colour do you wear  predominantly, do you have a reason for that colour, or is you are just comfortable, if you are comfortable, can  you say why ?

Interesting....I am of the Old School "Dress for Success" style and didn't own any dress shirt aside from White button down until about 10 years ago. Always black, blue or gray slacks although I have gotten daring and even moved to few pairs of brown and tan slacks. I gave up ties about 4 years ago but, in the winter will still wear sports jackets, blazers or a suit. I had to wear suits for so long that I got used to them and blue or black were considered Strong choices brown or anything else weaker. Goofy thinking, I know, but it was the way of the business world I grew up in. Has a lot to do with how I was raised and how My Father dressed. Not likely to see Me in a purple shirt anyway soon but now own a pink shirt and actually wear it!

Almost all of my slacks are black, grey, or that combination in pinstripes.  My pant suits are gray and my skirts are mostly black. Cost effectiveness. I have a pair of lovely grey checked heels that I can wear with several outfits and a pair of black Mary Janes that I can wear with several outfits. This means that I have basics and can spend more on blouses and use my black purse.  Further, I can wear these outfits without having to worry about whatever trendy little colors fly in and out of fashion.

as far as color goes...i slum alot, meaning jeans and tee shirts. But if i dress up it seems to be basic black or navy with a touch of a bright color (black suit with a hot pink tank).

I'm originally a New Yorker, we're always dressed for a funeral. Black from head to toe makes you look taller and thinner. Plus it won't show stains as well allowing you to eat lunch and not worry about your clothes.

I read once that the color that most attracts a man to a woman is peach.  It goes with every skin tone, has a softness about it, and seems to attract others.  I will dress in peach if I am looking to impress someone with my feminine qualities. 

I also read that each person has their own color that they are particularly attractive in.  It doesn't matter what the cut and style of the clothing are; it is the color that attracts people.  When I want to look really hot I wear royal blue.

Having done business in China I wear bright red on the day that a deal is to be closed.  It is considered good luck.

For business meetings and when I teach I wear dresses.  Because I work almost exclusively with men I want them to see that I am not pretending to be one, while at the same time being feminine does not lower my intelligence nor my negotiation skills.  I rarely wear black, though I enjoy it for casual time, because I do not want to look austere.  It is most often solid colors, modestly cut but attractive.

See - some people put a lot of thought into color.  : )

Oh hunny - someone may have written it, and ya may have read it, but it just ain't so!  I've never been able to wear peach tones.  They do  the same thing to my skin that wearing Orange, Rust, or any sort of red that even Leans towards the Orange side of the spectrum does to my skin - ie, makes me look sallow and downright jaundiced!  All of the women in my family (at least on the maternal side, which is what I take after genetically lol) have been that way.
 
As to the OP :  predominantly Black, various shades of Gray, and the darker shades of Blue, Purple, and Green.  I have things that aren't in that spectrum, but they aren't my "first choice" when I start to get dressed.  I'm simply more comfortable in darker clothing choices.  Since I work for myself from home - the majority of the time it's either jeans and a T - or I simply don't get "dressed" and go in my workshop still in my pjs.  (Don't knock it - I Like being able to "go to work" like that!)  If I'm going to be doing a show for sales purposes, style is based on comfort and type of show - but the color choices are still predominantly dark.

If I had to guess, I'd say most people here wear white; sometimes with a pattern, often without.  Even in winter...lots of white coats.  Makes little sense, but maybe it's because our winters are long and dreary.

This may not be true but by my observation I think women are far more likely to wear black then men… I think they do it because it is flattering to all skin tones and can be matched with any color.

Of course men also wear black but much less frequently. Formal men’s attire is often black but worn on formal or special occasions. In general black is a hot fabric to wear and men usually would rather be comfortable than stylish.

they wear black because it tends to go with every other color...so matching it is easier....and you dont have to take 2 hours to get dressed.

i wear red and green because it goes with the color of my hair.  i cant find black stuff around here...too many goths....eat it all up.

Here the dominant colors differ depending on which school you happen to be near. Purple and yellow for one, blue for another and burgundy for the third. And, of course, lots and lots of Orange. This is the first city where I noticed that school spirit outweighed fashion more often than not. For more formal wear, though, the tendency here is towards blue and very bold patterns.
Me, I go for black because it will not show any sort of mess if I happen to attract one.

Black is sexy on men and women. I like it because I have black heels in every flavor and variety and it's so much fun! Love the heels.

If I really wanna stand out--which is almost never--"lady in red."

I usually am in my work clothes.. so khaki and black..LOL

casual? lots of black tshirts (for some reason, most bands offer black tshirts..).. if I'm going out, dark greens are a good color for me, dark autumn colors too. White.  Most yellows look like crap on me (that sallow thing).

eta: as far as other people..  seems like light colors (hey, it's FLorida).. and at work, it's mostly camo (lots of military guys)

On 'off' days, I sometimes dilute the black with other colours, usually dark green, dark red or purple, this is usually a shirt only. For some reason, when I know I am going to get covered in crap, says whilst I am making mud pies in ceramics, I wear blue, which of course often ends up covered in clay and slip and yukky things like that.

I am only wearing black until they make something darker. [:D]
